SUSAN B. ANTHONY Susan B. Anthony's life work was n ot just a battle of the sexes. It was a battle for human rights for a ll-for the Negro; for the working people; for women ; for all whom sh e found oppressed. Her causes were many ranging from t he right of women to become school principals, to equality of educational a dvanta ges for Negro children, to passage of Jabor laws, to anti-slavery legislation, to temperance work. Only courage and patience k ept Miss Anthony going in h er early years, for she was ridiculed, mocked and humiliated unmercifully. A woman journalist on the Cincinnati Commercial was one of the few who early a pprecia ted her determination. She wrote of h er "rare" but "genial smile," of her "invincibility," a nd proclaimed : "The world is better for thee, Susan."* By the time Susan B. Anthony died, however, she did attain the love and respect of her fellowmen despite her powerful en emies. The Democrat and Chronicle wrote of her in 1904: "We admire and esteem.one so single minded, earnest and unselfish... " * *( From "Susan B. Anthony'' by Alma Lutz) OFFICERS OF THE ROCHESTER FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S CLUBS The Roch ester Federation was founded by Susan B. Anthony in 1898, then known as Councel af Women.
