Pastor s Letter July 22/23 Weeds and Wheat Dear Parish Family, Whenever I hear Jesus parable about the weeds and the wheat I think about my garden. The wheat are the tomatoes, basil, and zucchini bought at local garden centers and planted with great expectation. The weeds are those annoying competitors who arrive unannounced, unwanted, and who are clearly the enemy of the garden! Like most gardeners I do what I can to prevent, uproot, and otherwise defend my garden from these most unwelcome adversaries. It is a mystery to me that the good plants can be so hard to cultivate while the weeds seem to thrive anywhere and without any attention. And the greatest east end question of all is why don t the deer eat the weeds? Things were pretty much the same for the farmers who listened to Jesus. Protecting the wheat from the weeds was a daily job. The meaning of the parable is deepened by the fact that the most common weed at the time of Jesus was a plant often called a tare. Wheat and tare look very similar and it is difficult to distinguish them before the harvest time. Hence, Jesus advice was to allow them to grow together lest the grower root out both and destroy the harvest. This advice of Jesus does not mean that we cannot distinguish good from evil, right from wrong, or virtues from vices. But it does mean that we should not be too quick in our rooting out of things, especially when the things are people. After all, people change, people grow, people undergo conversion, and even life itself can surprise us. I bet that almost every reader of this parable has had at least one experience where something they thought was a disaster turned out for the good, or a person who they thought was an enemy turned out to be a friend. Allowing for this surprise is part of the life of faith and part of being a Christian. Let me make this a bit more personal. All of us have had moments where we have not been our best selves and anyone looking in at that moment might pronounce us one of the weeds in the garden. But then enters conversion and forgiveness. Jesus takes it for granted that we are all forgiven by God, and often encourages us to be equally forgiving of one another. The world is God s garden and we are the plantings in that garden. The wise gardener, who is God, will sort out the good from evil, but meanwhile allows both to grow side by side. Summer gardens give us a little hands-on time with weeds and wheat. Summer days give us a chance to take a new look at ourselves and others. Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

In Sympathy Carolyn Y. Grisnik We mourn the passing of Carolyn Grisnik on July 10, 2017. A mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on July 14, 2017 at the Basilica Parish of Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary by Rev. Michael A. Vetrano and concelebrated by Rev. Janusz Lipski and Rev. Chzystof Kaucha. Interment followed in Sacred Hearts cemetery. Carolyn was a school teacher and later also a religious education teacher at Sacred Heart Church. She and her husband, Bob, owned Southrifty Drugs in Southampton, where she worked. She was caring, loving person who had a smile and nice word for everyone. Carolyn loved to bake for family and friends. She was also active in many community activities and organizations, including The Southampton Lioness Club. Our sympathies go out to her husband, Bob, her children, Carla and Jason, her 3 grandchildren, Connor, Hudson and Cru, many family and friends. Reflections On the Gospel July 23, 2017 Faith and Ministries Once again Sunday s Gospel tells a story of a farmer sowing seed. This time an enemy invades the field and plants weeds among the good seed. The farmer allows the weeds to grow lest good seed be removed with the bad. Again the seeds are symbolic, representing the good and evil among us. In time justice will be done. We have in our world today the good seeds of love and compassion, mercy and forgiveness. We also have the deadly seeds of hatred and arrogance, violence and vindictiveness. We have those who work for peace and those who work against it. Programs: Secular Franciscans meet on the Second Sunday of the month after the 11 AM Mass in the Parish Center. You are always welcome to come to our meetings. Please come, bring a friend, bring a snack for breakfast, and we supply the coffee. Resurrection Prayer Group :: meets on Tuesdays at 6 PM in the Parish Center. Come share your healing gifts with us.
