MARQUETTE DISTRICT UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Spring Summer 2016 President s Post The Marquette District was privileged to have Dorothy Frederickson, Missionary to Haiti for the past 25 years as the speaker for a UMW Sunday. She has accomplished much in her time there and would love to retire, but is having trouble finding a replacement. If any of you feel called to this type of Ministry Dorothy would be happy to talk with you. We were pleased to send 2 big boxes of girls sun-dresses and boys shorts for use by the children that she works with. We continue to support Gods Country Cooperative Parish, Camp Michigamme, and Bay Cliff Health Camp, as well as community projects such as local food pantries, warming shelters for the homeless, visits to nursing homes and shut-ins. Our financial problems have been resolved and our treasury is once again looking healthy. The next Spiritual Growth Retreat will be April 29 & 30 at the Manistique Comfort Inn with a Theme of "Bloom Where You Are Planted". Anyone with questions concerning the office they are holding should reference The UMW Handbook 2013-2016 or call myself or the previous office holder. Bobbie Clift, Marquette District President 906-361-2234 blclift@charter.net SPIRITUAL LIFE RETREAT APRIL 29-30, 2016

SPIRITUAL GROWTH Jane Yaeger Are you blooming?? The patch in which you re planted may have its thorns and weeds, The ground that you ve been granted may have its rocks and reeds; The slope on which you re slanted may all have gone to seed, But bloom where you are planted for the Lord. Now put your root down deeper into God s Book divine, Your leaves will be much greener, your flowers fragrance fine, Your fruit will ripen richer for Heaven s harvest time, So, bloom where you re planted for the Lord. The subject will be flowers and flowering (or blooming) in the real sense and in the spiritual sense-- for our April 29-30 Spiritual Growth Retreat in Manistique. The registration form is in this newsletter and I hope you will talk about it and circulate the info within your church and UMW meetings. Darlene Pruess is preparing a wonderful program for us and I can guarantee a good and enriching time as we learn and fellowship. If you have any questions, please call me at 906-864-4433 or email me at: plainjane210@sbcglobal.net Hope to see you in April! Jane Yaeger SECRETARY Patti Steinberg Thank you to all of the Marquette District UMW units who returned their list of officers to me either via mail or email! Great job this year! Wasn t the District Celebration at St. Ignace a blast? I was taking minutes during the meeting but while Hannah Heebner was talking I set my pen down and just listened in awe at the amazing things the Methodist Children s Home Society is doing. I had a chance to catch up with Hannah at the Conference District Celebration in Ferndale and SHE was in awe of all the gifts at the front of the church and the monetary donations made by the Marquette District. Hey girls that s you and me! We can SO make a difference feeding His sheep with our gifts and our attitudes!! After attending my FIRST MQT District Spiritual Growth Retreat last year, I vowed it will be an annual pilgrimage to Manistique. I m hoping I can talk a few women from the Ontonagon, Rockland, Greenland UMW units into coming along. Finally I ask that you add your Marquette District UMW Leadership Team to your prayers. We are working to further the Lord s Prayer that HIS will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Let it be SO! AMEN, Patti

TREASURER Barb Akins Last year had a few bumps, but by the end of the year I felt like things were running a lot smoother. I did not send out yearly statements to each group for money sent in because I sent you a receipt each time I received money, but if you would like a yearly total, just let me know & I will send you one. Now that I actually know what I am doing, I have a few suggestions to help make sure there are no miscommunications between us. First of all, please use the proper form when sending money in. If you don t have the form, you may find it at www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/treasure rs. Both the treasurer s remittance form and the SMR form can be printed. If you don t have access to that, just let me know & I will be happy to mail you some forms. Also, please be sure your unit name and your contact info are filled in on the form. I got a few without that info this year. When you send in a gift to mission, be sure to specify if you want a card, and if so which one. If nothing is listed, I will assume you don t want a card. The same applies to gift in memory. Many groups have their own supply of these cards, so unless you request a card, I will not send it. If you were at the District annual meeting in October, you will remember the presentation from Conference President Micky Phelps regarding the Grand Rapids Community House for which we now share responsibility as part of the merger with the West Michigan Conference. We agreed to donate $4 per member for some maintenance on the building. Some of you may have perhaps sent money directly to the Conference Treasurer, but I would encourage you to send it as a designated gift to me & I will forward it to the Conference Treasurer. I'm looking forward to working with all of local units during the coming year. Please feel free to call or email me if you have any concerns or questions about your giving. Barb Akins SOCIAL ACTION and EDUCATION and INTERPRETATION Carol Tembreull Darlene Pruess Grace and Peace to all across the Marquette District. Darlene and I, Social Action and Education and Interpretation, encourage each unit to review the Mission Today Objectives and complete as many as possible. In doing this it helps you plan your year and your meetings, and lift up our missionaris as you use the Prayer Calendar. Use the Response magazine along wih your program books, there are terrific examples of Women in Action in this magazine. There are many activities going on around the District, with the Spiritual Growth Retreat in Manistique happening this spring. We encourage everyone to attend. Social Action is what we learn from Education and Interpretation, they work together hand in hand. Our mission starts at home, and in our churches, community

and it grows throughout the world. Reflect on our Purpose and pray for guidance. Become familiar with the UMW website: www.detroitconferenceumw,org. Darlene Pruess Carol Tembreull P.O. Thank you to the 21 units that submitted your 2015 membership information this fall. This year the Detroit Conference is changing the way we report our membership. There will be more information in the summer District newsletter. The Conference UMW is asking that each unit report their membership numbers directly to the Conference membership chairman. Forms will be included in the summer newsletter. I hope you make the Marquette District proud by having 100 % of our units reporting. Have a blessed 2016, Pat Carmody MNO Chairman 906 524-6825 PROGRAM RESOURCES Beth Clark Moira Cowling Hope you all had a good winter and kept warm. The reading program books are a good way to take a break from your spring chores, or if spring fever is really taking hold, to pleasantly while away a substantial portion of your day. We will have many new books for sale and/or check out at the Spiritual Growth Retreat. We look forward to seeing you then. If you have questions please feel free to contact us. Beth Clark 715-696-3773 Moira Cowling 906-774-5130 NOMINATIONS Bobbi Sundquist Your UMW needs you! Some of us missed the wise words shared at the UMW gathering this fall so here is the replay! Thanks Barb Akins & Jane Yaeger for sharing your creativity. Two angels are talking: First angel: I love being here in heaven & praising God, but these jobs we re assigned are sometimes tough. Second angel: I know, like today these UMW ladies need help & we ve got some opposition. UMW ladies talking: I ve been asked to serve on the District Board. Me, too, but I just don t have time! I m so shy! I m sure not smart enough to do anything!

We ve been asked to pray about it, so let s do it. Busy lady prays, Lord, you can see how busy I am. Help them realize that. Shy lady prays, Lord, I pray they just forget about me! Not smart enough lady prays, Lord you know I can t do this, help them see that! Angels: oh no, we re going to have to do something. We d better send for Still Small Voice. Still Small Voice comes in & whispers to each. After a minute they respond Busy lady: You know what, I m going to make the time! Shy lady: I can do things through Christ! Not Smart Enough lady I don t have to know how to do everything.i can learn! Do you recognize yourself? Or a friend that you think will make a wonderful addition to the UMW Marquette District Board? We need your input as we plan for the future so please contact any of the Nominating Committee members to volunteer or suggest that special person you know. Listen to that Still Small Voice within! Bobbi Sundquist (906-864-9337 Deb Cavalieri (906-282-8037) Kathe Kunick (906-353-6075) Joyce Erickson (906-774-9279) Peggy Ekdahl (906-524-7697 Sharon Rice (906-226-3643) Marge Meyer (906-396-8913) Michigan UMWs Come Together A first step has been taken to unite the UMW of the Michigan Area. The W. MIch. UMW are the owners of the property and buildings of the UM community Hose in Grand Rapids. UMCH is run as a National Mission Institution through the UMW national. Several Conference UMW members sit on the Board of Directors. Various agencies contribute monies toward the UMCH, but the W. Mich. UMW is responsible of the maintenance. Eventually, The Michigan Area would be helping. West Mich. UMW has requested some help in financing some much needed repairs. At the 2014 W. Mich. District Annual meeting a campaign was launched to raise money for a new roof for the main House. The roof was paid for by Christmas, 2014! At the 2015 Annual Meeting other projects that are needed were presented. The Detroit UMW voted to help by giving an immediate donation the maintenance fund. They also voted to urge local women and groups to donate money to this fund. The most urgent need is the repair of the entry-way canopy. It was not part of the roof repair and has dry rot under its metal roofing. It could damage the new roof if not repaired. In heavy rain the water comes inside. Detroit UMW has challenged their UMW units to give at least $4 a member to help reach the goal of the $48,000 cost of a new canopy. Any giving beyond this amount will go toward the next most urgent need. (Condensed from Detroit Conf UMW website)
