Our Voluteers...the Heart of Your History Ceter As I walk through our galleries, observig groups of visitors, watchig childre ad adults participate i programs ad witessig excitemet ad ejoymet o the faces of our guests, almost always, at the ceter of these experieces, is oe of our museum s dedicated voluteers. I have had a opportuity to watch our voluteers i actio durig the two years sice we opeed. These geerous idividuals me ad wome ad youth from all over the Tampa Bay regio literally make what we do possible. They serve as docets, leadig tours through our exhibits, tellig stories ad brigig history to life. They assist us with special projects ad evets. They work i our collectios, admiistrative, educatio, advacemet ad marketig departmets. It is o exaggeratio to say that they make it possible for us to achieve our missio. A door is ecouraged to cosult with his or her ow tax advisor regardig the rules relatig to IRA distributios, but this tax law provisio permits a distributio to be made eve if a Required Miimum Distributio (RMD) to the IRA ower already has occurred i 2010. A distributio (i.e., gift) directly to a qualified o-profit ca be made i lieu of a RMD ad is ot cosidered taxable icome to the door. Artifact Spotlight Tampa Bay Rowdies artifacts, ca. 1975-1984 L2010.080.001,.005 2010.080.070-.073 Courtesy of Mike Coell This summer, the Tampa Bay Rowdies retured to play as members of the U.S. Soccer Federatio Divisio-2 Pro League. The origial Rowdies fouded i 1975 ad dissolved i 1993 were the first local sports team to wi a professioal champioship, defeatig the Portlad Timbers 2-0 to capture the 1975 Soccer Bowl title. Mike Coell, a origial member of the Rowdies, recetly doated ad loaed to the Tampa Bay History Ceter hudreds of artifacts from his playig career. Coell joied the squad as a 18-year-old from South Africa i 1975, ad played his etire career as a Tampa Bay Rowdie before retirig i 1984. Nickamed Iro Mike, he is widely regarded as oe of the most popular players i frachise history. The doatio will help to uderwrite educatioal programs at the History Ceter. Mosaic was pleased to uderwrite the Port City exhibit whe the History Ceter was built, ad ow this gift is focused o helpig with its educatioal missio, said David Towsed, assistat vice presidet of public affairs for Mosaic ad a member of the History Ceter s board of trustees. Topics will iclude Florida s role i the Civil War led by USF historia, Joh Belohlavek, the importace of photography durig the War ad Florida s Civil War archeological sites ad battlegrouds. The class will also iclude a tour of the History Ceter s exhibitio led by our Sauders Foudatio Curator of History, Rodey Kite-Powell. Civil War: Selectios, Collectios ad Coversatios will be held each Wedesday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the History Ceter from Jauary 19th through February 9th. Elliott Drawigs Fid Home at History Ceter M. Leo Elliot is resposible for some of Tampa s sigature buildigs icludig City Hall, Tampa Yacht Club, the Leima-Wilso house i Hyde Park ad Cetro Asturiao i Ybor City. Now, a collectio of his origial drawigs has bee doated to the History Ceter. The drawigs, which umber i the hudreds, were stored i the attic of a local egieerig firm for more tha 20 years ad were rediscovered whe the compay made repairs to its air coditioig system. This is a sigificat fid which ca help documet Tampa s historic architecture, said the History Ceter s Sauders Foudatio Curator of History, Rodey Kite-Powell. The drawigs are ow stored i the History Ceter s collectios storage facility ad will, over time, be digitally archived ad stored i large flat files. 6
Voluteer Spotlight: Joa Dale After growig up i Washigto D.C., ad spedig 34 years livig i Alexadria, Virgiia, Joa Dale ad her husbad, Chuck, made the move i 2006 to Apollo Beach. They were first itroduced to the Tampa Bay area i 2002 whe their daughter visited USF, whereupo they fell i love with Florida s tropical climate ad decided to stay. The mother of two grow childre, Joa graduated with a B.A. i Frech from the College of Notre Dame i Baltimore ad received a diploma from the Alliace Fracaise while livig i Paris after college. I D.C., she worked at the Library of Cogress for seve years, givig tours i both Frech ad Eglish. After her time as a stay-at-home mom, Joa spet 11 years with the Fairfax Couty Public Schools Adult & Commuity Educatio Office, first as a teacher for after-school Frech classes for elemetary school childre, the as a program supervisor. Joa also participated i a improv troupe who, takig o the roles of childre, visited schools ad preseted scearios focusig o coflict resolutio. Theatrics has always bee a big part of my life, she emphasizes, which is why I fid workig with kids i a tour settig so fulfillig. Followig her move to Tampa, Joa bega workig part time with USF s School of Social Work, teachig workshops o ager maagemet, commuicatio, problem solvig, ad esteembuildig. Joa also fids time to sig each week i her church choir, voluteers through her church o a Prayer Hotlie, ad does ballroom, tago ad swig dacig, sometimes up to three times a week. I was completely impressed ad kew immediately I was goig to sig o, she says of the History Ceter. A docet sice October 2009, Joa origially was scheduled for Thursday morigs. But I was havig so much fu, she explais, I siged up for Tuesdays, too. I adore childre s groups ad voluteerig here has bleded all my iterests. I m o cloud ie after every sigle tour.
