For Activities for Adults 1. To help introduce the 1-2-5 Challenge, choose one act of gratitude in which your group can participate during your Day of Prayer observance. Explain the challenge before doing the project. After completing the project, decide together how your group will serve your community on the one day of service on April 11, 2015. Follow that with a time of prayer for the two new South Asian missions connections. Lastly, guide members to choose five acts of gratitude to do individually this year. For a list of 125 suggested acts of gratitude, see the Alabama WMU Memory Book section below. 2. Did you know that Alabama was the first state to host the MK (Missionary Kid) Re-entry Retreat? This week-long retreat is for international missionaries children who are entering college in the United States for the first time. In 2015, Alabama will host the retreat again. Answer the following questions as a group: If you were moving to another country, what questions would you have? What fears might you have? How would you prepare, especially if you were going alone? Discuss the challenges that face MKs as they come, often alone, to the United States (a foreign country to them) for their college studies. Have a time of prayer for the MKs who will attend the 2015 re-entry retreat hosted by Alabama WMU. 3. There are more than 3,000 unengaged, unreached people groups (UUPGs) around the globe. Many of Alabama WMU s ministries are either directly or indirectly tied to reaching these people groups. Distribute an Alabama WMU Ministries Matching worksheet* to each participant. Have them see how well they know Alabama WMU s ministries, specifically those that relate to UUPGs. Visit www.alabamawmu.org/ministries for more information about the ministries. 4. As we consider our past and look to our future, have each member very briefly tell who first led her/him to be involved in WMU. Then give each participant an index card on which to write the name of a young adult in your church who is not currently involved in missions through Alabama WMU. Pray for the names, and commit to personally invite them to attend an Alabama WMU event (Renew, Equip, etc.) with you. Consider including the person in doing one or more of your five acts of gratitude or participating in an Alabama WMU ministry with you. 5. Using the history timeline in this material, paraphrase the 10 highlights from our history without including the dates, and write each event on 8.5 X 11 card stock*. Hang the cards in random order on a bulletin board. Have group members attempt to place the events in the correct chronological order. Tell them how many they have correct after each attempt. After several tries, share the correct order, and write the corresponding dates on the cards. Remember to allow time to distribute offering envelopes and collect and pray for the offering. * Printable timeline cards are available for download at www.alabamawmu.org/kmmo. The Ministries Matching worksheet is available on the back of the Day of Prayer poster and at www.alabamawmu.org/kmmo. If your group is unable to move around easily for activity 5, an alternative one-page worksheet can be found on the back of the Day of Prayer poster and at www.alabamawmu.org/kmmo. We were in China. The year was 2008, and 15 women from Alabama, ranging in age from 18 to mid-70s, were on the Emerging Leaders China Tour. Alabama WMU President and historian Rosalie Hunt was leading this group across parts of China, retracing the steps of missionary Lottie Moon. However, on this day, the group would be taking a detour. We would be visiting the site of the Kathleen Mallory Hospital in Laichow-fu, China. Just weeks before our journey there, Rosalie learned of the significant investment the women of Alabama Woman s Missionary Union had made in this city. Desiring to honor their own Kathleen Mallory as she took over the leadership of Woman s Missionary Union, SBC, the women of Alabama, who were inspired by the need in China, determined to build this hospital, which was dedicated in 1917. Rosalie made the connection in China, and plans were made to visit the site. As the day drew closer, we received exciting news - not only would we visit the site where the hospital stood, but believers from the local church would meet with us. The bus pulled into the busy parking lot, and our group filed out. We must have looked a sight as we began taking photos of the parking lot and building that now stood where once a hospital gave comfort and healing in this city. (The hospital was destroyed during World War II.) There we stood on the grounds of a place in which hundreds of women of Alabama WMU had invested yet had never stepped foot on the soil. Some 91 years later, her leadership would make that visit. At that moment, all of our history - our past, our present and our future - came together. We were met that day by some 15 or more believers from a local congregation. As I write, I can still see the beauty of their smiles. They came bearing hand-made gifts, and for those brief minutes our hearts were united. We listened as they Alabama Woman s Missionary Union www.alabamawmu.org 800.264.1225 Alabama WMU WorldSong Missions Place and Kathleen Mallory Mission Offering @alwmu @CandaceWMU told us about their congregation. They shared that it had been more than 50 years since they had an American visitor. As we continued our journey on to our next destination, my thoughts were many as I considered what it must have taken for the women of Alabama to embark on such a massive project. I was humbled by the courage, conviction and compassion that must have flowed from their souls as they determined to honor one of their own and, in doing so, bring honor and glory to the One they loved most, the Lord Jesus Christ. For it was in the faces of those Chinese believers that His glory shown. I have no idea, nor have I done the research to determine, if any of those believers were direct spiritual descendants of those who were touched by the missionaries who lived in this area. But, I do know this: the missionaries were there. They brought physical healing and the Good News of Jesus Christ to this area, and the women of Alabama helped to make that possible. This is but one example in our storied history of the many ways the members of Alabama WMU have helped change the world. One hundred twenty-five years have passed since Alabama WMU was voted into existence on Nov. 11, 1889, at the Alabama Baptist Convention at Selma Baptist Church. As we turn our hearts to the celebration of this milestone, I challenge us to remember our history, to thank the Lord for our present, and to vision for the future. The history of Alabama WMU is deep and strong, and so is our future. Romans 11:36 draws us to the heart of this celebration - for from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen. All that we were, all that we are, and all that we will be is controlled by our relationship with the Lord. Let us thank Him for His faithfulness in our past, present and future in all that we do. Let us act For His Glory as we use this opportunity to help others grasp a heart for missions and ministry. Project Manager: Brittney Gardner Contributors: Erin Bishop, Ashleigh Coats, Brittney Gardner, Pat Ingram, Candace McIntosh, Barbara Owen, Marti Richardson Throughout the next year, Alabama WMU is calling all members to join in the 1-2-5 challenge: 1 day of service on April 11, 2015, in which preschoolers to senior adults are called to SERVE For His Glory 2 missions connections, as new partnerships with South Asian peoples will be highlighted internationally and here in the United States 5 acts of gratitude to actively express thanks for all that God has done through Alabama WMU. Suggestions and ideas for acts of gratitude can be found in the Alabama WMU memory book entitled For His Glory, Reflections of His Goodness (see Alabama WMU Memory Book section of this material). The first statewide WMU offering was taken in 1906, and it would be more than 40 years before this offering would take on the name it is known by today, the Kathleen Mallory Mission Offering (KMMO). For 108 years, members have given faithfully to support the ministries of Alabama WMU. Consider this as you plan for your focus on the Alabama WMU Day of Prayer and collection of the Kathleen Mallory Mission Offering. Remember the quiet courage our founding leaders had as they stood in a time when women didn t lead. They, much like us today, knew together they could do more than separate. The conviction they had was intense as their hearts yearned to live out the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) and the Great Commandment (Acts 1:8). And, their compassion ignited them to action as they heard story after story from the mission field of those, both far away and at home, who lived without the hope of Jesus Christ. These same principles continue to move us forward today. May we have the courage to dream big dreams and think long thoughts about the future of Alabama WMU. May our convictions to reach the more than 3,000 unengaged, unreached people groups overseas and at home move us forward. May our compassion for the lost make our hearts hurt to the point of action. And may it all be done For His Glory! Did you know... Although born into a wealthy, influential family, she chose a life of near poverty. While engaged, she lost the love of her life, a doctor, to an extended illness and never married. She served the longest tenure to date at the helm of WMU, SBC. Alabama WMU History Highlights Each of the past 125 years are filled with stories of amazing things God has accomplished through Alabama WMU and her membership. Highlighted below are some of the more memorable milestones in our history. Sunday, Nov. 11, 1889 On Sunday, Nov. 11, 1889 at the Alabama Baptist Convention at Selma Baptist Church, Rev. John W. Stewart proposed a resolution... that a woman s Missionary Society be organized in every church.... The new women s missions organization would function as an auxiliary to the state convention; that is still true today. Amanda Tupper Hamilton was elected the first president. 1906 The first statewide WMU offering was collected in Alabama in 1906. It has been collected annually since. 1908-1909 Daily prayer calendars were introduced by WMU, SBC in 1908 and sold for 15 cents. The first year, nearly 500 were sold in Alabama. Also in 1908, the first leadership training conferences were held in several locations in the state, the forerunner to our annual leadership training in July. By 1909, there were 425 women s missionary societies and 347 young people s organizations throughout the state. 1917 Kathleen Mallory Hospital in Laichow-fu, China, was built through donations from the women of Alabama WMU and dedicated in 1917 to honor The Sweetheart of Alabama Baptists, Kathleen Mallory, who served first at Alabama WMU for three years and then as Corresponding Secretary of WMU, SBC for 36 years. 1924-1925 In 1924, Alabama WMU designated $50,000 to construct a building at Judson College. Woman s Missionary Union Hall, fondly known today by its residents as W, was completed in 1925, paid for completely by Alabama WMU. Through the years, both Judson College and Howard College (now Samford University) have received generous support from Alabama WMU. 1928-1929 In 1928-29, WMU,SBC set lofty goals for increasing the number of missions groups as well as giving through mission offerings. With a goal of 3,000 new WMU members, Alabama WMU had enlisted 3,703 new members by the end of the campaign. Similarly, our state goal for mission offerings was $201,200, and that goal was surpassed with the grand total for contributions of $252,578.10. 1949 In 1949, the statewide Alabama WMU offering was re-named the Kathleen Mallory Mission Offering, the name it still holds today, to honor the retirement of Kathleen Mallory after 36 years of service as WMU, SBC corresponding secretary. To this day, she holds the longest tenure in that position. 1959 The year 1959 was the first year every association in the state had at least one WMU group. It had taken 70 years to reach this milestone. 1970s The early 1970s brought about change in all Southern Baptist organizations including Alabama WMU. Preschoolers were organized as Mission Friends; Girls Auxiliary became Girls in Action for girls 1st through 6th grades; girls in 7th through 12th grades became Acteens; and adult women were organized as Baptist Young Women and Baptist Women. 1990 Alabama WMU purchased the 344-acre camp which would be named WorldSong Missions Place in 1990. Additional purchases brought the camp s acreage to 618. The last loan on the property and buildings was paid off in 2008. Now, children, students and adults of all ages enjoy missions camps and other activities year round at WorldSong....and it was all For His Glory!

Day of Prayer and KMMO Recommended Activities Listed on the following pages are age-level activities for observing the Alabama WMU Day of Prayer and Kathleen Mallory Mission Offering. Feel free to customize your observance to best meet the time constraints of your group. This year, all age-level study materials are together in this brochure. Preparation for Churchwide Leaders For His Glory! is the theme for the 2014 Alabama WMU Day of Prayer and KMMO Observance. This year s theme verse, Romans 11:36, reminds us that from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. As we celebrate 125 years of God s faithfulness to Alabama WMU, begin by thanking Him for all He has done and asking Him to guide you in your plans so that they would truly be For His Glory!. Pray for the age-level leaders in your church. Pray together about ways to celebrate, pray for and participate in the Day of Prayer and Kathleen Mallory Mission Offering. Meet with your pastor to set a date for your observance and discuss plans. Suggested dates are Sept. 9-10, 2014. If those dates don t work for your church, coordinate with your pastor and other leaders to choose another time. Determine when and how you will distribute the Day of Prayer prayer guides and KMMO offering envelopes. Develop plans with your leadership team to present the material to the various age-level groups within your church. Encourage leaders in your church to prayerfully consider the age-level suggestions included in this material. Discuss possibilities for a missions or ministry project involving more than one group. Look over the suggestions for each age-level to determine if you can work together to complete a project. For instance, different groups could join together to adopt and pray for one missionary kid attending the MK Re-entry Retreat. Set your church s offering goal with your pastor and age-level leaders. The statewide goal for 2014 is $475,000. Order materials. Along with various promotional items for the offering, consider other resources that Alabama WMU offers that will coordinate with your age-level plans. If possible, submit one order for your church including requested materials for all age groups. Order online at www.alabamawmu.org/fmof or use the Free Materials Order Form included in this material. Activities for Preschoolers 1. Using blocks, have preschoolers build a hospital. Tell them about the hospital in China that was built in honor of Kathleen Mallory from Alabama. 2. Help preschoolers make banks for the Kathleen Mallory Mission Offering using disposable storage containers. Divide up 125 coins for the preschoolers to take turns putting into their banks. Tell them that Alabama WMU is 125 years old! Remind them when to return their offerings. Caution: Supervise carefully. 3. For snack time, celebrate Alabama WMU s 125th anniversary with cupcakes and party hats. If you d like, go all out decorating your room with balloons, streamers, banners, etc. 4. Assist each preschooler in drawing a heart. Provide pictures of Kathleen Mallory*, safety scissors and glue sticks. Let preschoolers glue the picture of Kathleen Mallory inside the heart. Tell them she was called The Sweetheart of Alabama Baptists because of her work for missions. 5. Share Bible thoughts with preschoolers such as: Love one another (John 13:34, John 15:12, 1 John 4:11). Help one another (Proverbs 19:17, Romans 12:10, James 1:27). Pray for one another (Luke 6:28, Ephesians 6:18, James 5:16,). Bring an offering (Psalm 96:8, Psalm 107:22). Write the Bible thoughts and verse references on strips of paper*, and place the strips in their corresponding pages in a Bible. Let preschoolers each pull a strip out of the Bible. Read the phrase and the corresponding Bible verse, and then discuss as a group. Conclude by asking preschoolers why we do these things - For His Glory! Let the group shout the phrase several times. *Kathleen Mallory photo and pre-made Bible strips can be found on the back of the Day of Prayer poster or downloaded at www.alabamawmu.org/kmmo.

Activities for Children 1. Tell children about the hospital in China that was built entirely through money given by the women of Alabama WMU. As a group, answer the following questions: What do think was the hardest part about building a hospital in another country? Why do you think the women wanted to build a hospital? Tie the discussion in with the theme - For His Glory! Then fill plastic zip-top bags with first-aid items to donate to a local homeless ministry. 2. Celebrate Alabama WMU s 125th anniversary with a party complete with cupcakes. Attach a piece of paper containing the name of an Alabama WMU ministry to a toothpick, and put one in each cupcake. Go around the room, and briefly discuss the ministries as you eat. For more information about Alabama WMU ministries, visit www.alabamawmu.org/ministries, or order a Ministries Brochure from Alabama WMU. 3. Choose one of the 125 acts of gratitude from the Alabama WMU memory book (see Alabama WMU Memory Book section of this material) to complete as a group during your Day of Prayer session. Some suggested acts of gratitude for children are: #37, #41, #42, #43, #93. 4. Make banks from containers of your choosing that will easily hold coins and bills. Decorate the banks with stickers, construction paper, markers/crayons, etc., label them and write on the bank the date they need to be returned. 5. As Alabama WMU begins new partnership opportunities through our 2 mission connections, help your group learn about the peoples of South Asia. Use a map to show children the countries located in South Asia (visit www.southasianpeoples.imb.org/explore for a list). Henna,a traditional art form of staining patterns onto the skin, is a big part of South Asian culture. After visiting http://southasianpeoples.imb.org/stories/view/bible-storying explain to children how henna is being used to spread the Gospel in South Asia. Have children trace one of their hands on a piece of paper. Then have them draw a henna pattern on their handprints. A sample henna pattern can be found on the back of the Day of Prayer Poster or downloaded at www.alabamawmu.org/kmmo. Finish with a time of prayer for the people of South Asia and missionaries serving there. Activities for Students 1. As we celebrate 125 years of Alabama WMU, groups will be encouraged to participate in the 1-2-5 Challenge. The 2 stands for two new partnerships Alabama WMU will have, both of which will reach out to South Asian peoples. As a group, use a map to discover the countries located in South Asia (visit www.southasianpeoples.imb.org/explore for more information). Write these countries on slips of paper, and have each student take a turn drawing a country from a hat. Discuss what, if anything, you already know about this country, its people, culture and primary religion. Make it a priority to research your country, and pray daily for the people living there. Share what you learned the next time you gather. 2. As the introduction referenced emerging leaders, discuss with your group what qualities make a good leader. Which qualities do you feel you possess now, and which ones need to be developed further? Break into groups, and make a plan of ways you can begin to develop your leadership skills along with a specific action you can take to be a Christian leader in your school this year. Check out Alabama WMU s student events as one possible way to develop leadership skills. 3. The Kathleen Mallory Mission Offering is used to further God s work at home and abroad through the ministries of Alabama WMU. Spend some time as a group brainstorming things you, as a teen, could sacrifice in order to give through KMMO. Make banks from old, clean soda bottles, empty cans or anything else you may have that can hold coins and bills using fun scrapbook paper and tape or decoupage. Share your giving plans and banks with the group. Pray over the banks after everyone has shared. 4. To convey the theme and verse, have students write down their answers to the following questions*. Play Kari Jobe & Matt Maher s To You Be the Glory in the background (available on itunes). When I try to force the outcome I want in a situation,. When I wait on God s timing,. When I try to hold onto the blessings I ve been given,. When I am generous in my giving,. When I (list a personal hobby or talent like playing tennis, singing, painting, etc.) for my glory,. When I do it for God s glory,. Discuss your answers as a group. Challenge students to live wholeheartedly for His glory. 5. Gratitude is another part of the 1-2-5 Challenge. Choose one act of gratitude to do as a group during your gathering. Some recommended acts are: #7, #36, #37, #45, #109. Challenge students to complete five acts of gratitude from the list on their own by the end of the school year. A list of 125 suggested acts of gratitude can be found in the Alabama WMU memory book, For His Glory, Reflections of His Goodness (see Alabama WMU Memory Book section of this material). *A printable handout of these questions is available at www.alabamawmu.org/kmmo.

For His Glory, Reflections of His Goodness The Alabama WMU Memory Book The Alabama WMU memory book contains 125 memories from Alabama WMU members and leaders around the state along with a list of 125 suggested acts of gratitude for the 1-2-5 Challenge.
