... official publication of Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club District 5240, Club 654, Bakersfield, California, Chartered 12/13/82 Volume 28 February 22, 2006 CECIL MARTIN, President, 2005-2006 - Think Globally, Act Locally P resident Cecil Martin returned to his flock on this chilly morning. He drew everyone s attention to his business attire advising that he would be attending to some business later in the day. He added, I m afraid I ll be buried in work today! Greeters Jerry Starr and Mike Stepanovich were acknowledged for arriving early and meeting everyone, including a few visitors, with a firm BBRC handshake. Lori Hobmann was hosted by Dan Johnson, Emily Cox came with her dad Tim, and Becky Smith brought her friend, Jen Plotnick. Our visiting Rotarians were Jerry Arseneau from the Nipomo Club, and Wayne Swanson from Dallas, Oregon. DeAnn Straub has learned well from her sponsor as she did a truly magnificent job introducing Jerry and Wayne. Neil Walker did double-duty filling in for absent Jason William- Neil Walker Editor Website: www.bbrc.org son on the invocation. Julie Stewart led us in the pledge after which we sang on-key under the always vigilant tutelage of Secretary Carol Smith. One song was directed at birthday boy, Darin Blunt. Kay and Brian Pitts were recognized for 25 years of marriage. Two out of three new members who were intended recipients of their cherished blue badges could not come up with the requested roster that should have been signed by all members. The presentations to Chad Sorensen and Denise Haynes, therefore, were held until later. Sam Kemper, however, sprinted happily to the podium waving his signed document WEEKLY PROGRAMS 1 Mar One Book One Bakersfield Author - David Mas Matsumoto 8 Mar What Is New with the Gleaners Sue Benham 15 Mar CSU System Allen Carden 22 Mar Boys and Girls Club Impact Zane Smith 29 Mar Club Assembly 5 Apr Skyline Cabinets (Off Site) South from 58 on Mt. Treasurer Denise Knudson logged in $25 assessments for each faux pas. Congratulations to Christina Pavletich who announced that the stork will be making its 3 rd round trip to the Pavletich home. The Fine Marshals were honed and ready for action. Trouble is, they once again turned on themselves. Bob Bryant was fined because Restaurant Reviewer, Pete Tittl visited the Lie-N-Den. Jim Bell bought yet another vehicle, a Ford truck President Martin is shown studying the roster sheet of the newest Blue Badger, Sam Kemper standing). Seated left to right Ed O Donnell, Neil Walker, Georgianna Armstrong, and Kay Pitts. from none other than PP Paul Cooper - Paul split Jim s $20 fine. Gina Hayden bought a new home. Cherryl Biggar went to the Aloha State with both her father and her hubby, Bruce. Karen Wass once again worked the system. By presenting Prez Cec with a five dollar T-shirt showing Mickey Mouse sitting astride a blown hemi engine, Cecil became so preoccupied goo-gooing over his new shirt that he failed to fine the blazes out of the Wasses for their trip to the Daytona 500. Oft-fined Mike Stepanovich should take fineavoidance notes from Karen. PP Howie was still visibly miffed at Jerry Saba for the midnight phone call that roused Howie from dreamland. Seems that Jerry needs some geography lessons and a tutorial on Greenwich Mean Time and Zulu. Volume 28 Page 3 (Continued from page 2) THE PROGRAM Kay Pitts introduced Georgianna Armstrong, a UCLA graduate with a bachelors in Economics. She has18 years experience working within the private sector in Southern California, and 2 years experience as the Office of Emergency Services Planner in Kern County. She was appointed as OES Emergency Manager in January 2005 Georgianna is the lynchpin in Kern County emergency planning - she makes sure that first responders have the equipment and tools they need to handle emergencies. She is responsible for the Homeland Security funding that comes to Kern County. Emergency Services Manager for the OES division of the Kern County Fire Department. Georgianna gave the club an excellent presentation on family emergency preparedness. Her anecdotes were right on the mark and kept the audience captivated. She described The List - a punch list of all the steps and supplies that Kern County residents should have readily available in case of fire, flood, earthquake.... volcano eruption!! Georgianna highly recommended that we visit an emergency website for more particulars. Agencies such as the Red Cross, Fire Department, OES, Homeland Security, and many others have this information on their websites. Several members including Mary Jo Pasek and PP Carl Leech publicly and privately spoke to Georgianna specifically complimenting her excellent program. THANK YOU FROM ROTARIANS OF THE YEAR Dear Fellow Rotarians, Ed and I wanted to take just a moment of your time to say thank you for the honor the club presented to us on Charter Night as Rotarians of the Year. At the time I was crying and speechless (hard to believe, but it s true), and just beyond words to express my feelings. BBRC is very near and dear to our hearts. We had only lived in Bakersfield a short time when we became members of BBRC. The way BBRC welcomed us into the BBRC family was amazing. We love how BBRC is very active financially and physically in helping others. The members of BBRC are just awesome, and to be honored as Rotarians of the Year out of all these wonderful people is just. Wow! Thank you very much for this honor and for letting us be a part of the BBRC family. WHO IS THIS FUTURE ROTARIAN? Shown here at the junior high age of 12 or 13 (Identity will be revealed at the next meeting.) Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club P.O.
