A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR When I was in the fifth grade, I read a book entitled Blood of the Brave. It was a corny novel for kids about Franciscan missionaries trying to convert the Aztecs in Mexico during the time of the Spanish conquistadores. Now, you might think that I was drawn to the book out of my budding zeal for the apostolic mission, but frankly, I found the Franciscans to be a bore. I was far more interested in the Aztec priests. They wore huge, plumed headdresses and painted their bodies blue and danced and chanted and cut out the hearts of sacrificial victims and possessed eerie powers. I was impressed by them because they had a very real, very obvious connection to the spiritual world, and they most definitely meant business. The book inspired in me an interest in the spiritual experiences of indigenous cultures and religions. So in later year, I studied primal human spirituality. I discovered that all the things we do in the practice of our christian faith have roots in primal human spirituality. Everything from the rosary to the sacraments works because of the way God made us spiritually, and that spiritual foundation is common to all people and all religious traditions. Of course, this is a huge topic to cover, and I can only give it mention here, but I mention it because of an interesting thing I noted this week. This past Friday evening Bishop John Manz administered the sacrament of confirmation to our eighth grade students. As Bishop Manz chrismated each of the confirmandi, he said, "Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit." It made me think of my study of primal human spirituality. To heal people, shamans will journey to the realm of the spirit to recover a person's lost soul-parts or lost power animals. Upon finding the lost spiritual essences, the shaman returns and blows them back into the person and then shakes a rattle around the person to seal in the spirit against further loss. In the Rite of Confirmation, the bishop calls down the Holy Spirit on the confirmandi and then seals it in with the Sacred Chrism. Though it would have been cool to see Bishop Manz shaking a big, noisy, spooky rattle around each 8th grader, the principle is the same. The Holy Spirit is sealed in and fills any space that was empty in the confirmandi. But the really fascinating thing about confirmation, from the perspective of primal human spirituality, is that the spirit that is being sealed into the confirmandi is not simply part of their own lost spiritual essence or the energy of a helper or guide in the spiritual realm. It is God. I like that. It makes me think of those chanting, blue, knife-wielding Aztec priests who meant serious business. How much more serious could we be? This is no ordinary spirit. This is God. Perhaps your own confirmation was recent. Maybe it was decades ago. It does not matter. When you were confirmed, God was sealed inside of you. You are filled with the Holy Spirit, and now he lives and moves and breathes in you. Are you aware of that? Shamans say that a power animal or spiritual guide can be lost if we do not spend time with it and learn from it. God promises us that he will never abandon us, but we can easily abandon God. Sometimes that abandonment is the subtle loss of forgetting that the divine dwells in us. Then we live differently and we lose touch with the divine. It is then that we might be in need of a soul retrieval. This week we begin Lent. On Ash Wednesday, come to church to be smudged with ashes. It is not quite as dramatic as being painted blue, but it carries a similar message. It shows that you mean business -- the business of living your life in such a way that the presence of the Holy Spirit in you is obvious. Lent has always been the church's time to prepare for sacramental initiation -- baptism, confirmation, and eucharist. So this Lent, remember your confirmation. Remember that the bishop blew the Holy Spirit into you to fill you with God. Then he sealed the Holy Spirit in you with the Sacred Chrism. The Spirit will not leave you, but you can forget about him. So remember. Remember that God lives and moves and breathes in you. Remember that you are filled with no ordinary spirit but with the Holy Spirit, and make Lent a time to demonstrate that to the world. And if you need any help, feel free to stop by church. I have plenty of blue paint and a really cool rattle. Fr. Michael SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 19, 2012 It is I, I, who wipe out, for my own sake, your offenses; your sins I remember no more. Isaiah 43:25 THE CROWN Divine Infant Parish

WHY DO CATHOLICS OBSERVE LENT? Lent is the primary penitential season in the Church year. It begins with Ash Wednesday and ends with the beginning of the Sacred Paschal Triduum. Lent reflects the forty days Jesus spent in the desert fasting and praying before his public ministry. This helps us remember the great events of salvation history. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15). Ash Wednesday is the 22nd of February. The Rite of Blessing and Distribution of Ashes will take place during all the liturgies of the day: 6:30am -- Eucharist 8:00am -- Eucharist 12:15pm -- Liturgy of the Word 4:00pm -- Liturgy of the Word 7:00pm -- Eucharist FRIDAY NIGHT LENTEN SPECIALS at a glance LENTEN REGULATIONS Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. The season of Lent is a preparation for the celebration of Easter. The liturgy prepares the catechumens for the celebration of the paschal mystery by the several stages of Christian initiation. It also prepares the faithful, who recall their baptism and do penance in preparation for Easter (General Norms for the Liturgical Year, #27). By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally, or a substantial number of such days, must be considered serious. (On) weekdays of Lent, we strongly recommend participation in daily Mass and self-imposed observances of fasting. In light of grave human needs, which weigh on the Christian conscience in all seasons, we urge during Lent generosity to local, national and world programs of sharing all things. Thus, we translate our duty of penance into a means of implementing the right of the poor to their part in our abundance (U.S. Bishops statement on penitential observances, 1966). A book report on A Cricket in Time Square was created by Grace Olen in reading class. She displays a stage folder that presents the character, the setting and other written information about the story. Pre-schooler Peter Chlopek, along with teacher Mrs. Shuflit, work on a Valentine Day project. The children painted with cotton balls over heart shaped doilies. Fourth graders, Mikaela Jackson, Quinton Harrold, Grace Olen, and Autumn Fulgram integrated their artistic ability during Religion class by interpreting their vision of Jesus. Pre-Schoolers Dwayne Houston and Savannah Gutierrez display the bags they made in preparation for all the valentines and goodies they hope to receive at their Valentine party.

The Tower Chorale Presents THE CREATION by Franz Joseph Haydn Sunday, March 4, 3:00 p.m. Divine Infant Church Under the Direction of Maestro Patrick Godon, The Creation, Haydn s masterpiece, is the featured work for The Tower Chorale s March Concert at Divine Infant Church. In 1802, Haydn wrote this response to a letter expressing admiration for the work. A secret voice whispered to me: There are in this world so few happy and contented people; sorrow and grief follow them everywhere; perhaps your labour will become a source in which the man bowed down by care, or burdened with business matters, will for awhile find peace and rest. The Chorale will be joined by four professional soloists: Christine Robertson, Soprano, Janet Mensen- Reynolds, Mezzo-soprano, Javier E. Bernardo, Tenor and Jeffrey DeLay, Baritone. The International Chamber Artists (ICA) and Dennis Zimmer on harpsichord will accompany the work. Parishioners of Divine Infant will receive a discount on the tickets. Tickets will be available in the vestibule on February 25 & 26, after each mass. OR, you may cut out this announcement and present it at the ticket table on March 4th, (doors open at 2:30 pm). Discounted Tickets: $12 Adults/Seniors/ Students; Children 10 & under free. For more information visit: www.towerchorale.org and http:// www.icamusic.org. This concert will mark the 14 th performance of The Tower Chorale s Classical Concerts at Divine Infant Church. MUSIC GROUPS ACCEPTING NEW MEMBERS The Divine Infant Adult Choir opens for newcomers at the beginning of each of the choir seasons. A complete schedule of events for the season will be distributed at that first rehearsal. The Divine Infant Cantors never take a break as a group. They rehearse and lead us in song year-round. We usually accept new membership to this group during the summer. Please visit our Cantor Corner on the Divine Infant website music tab to learn more about our cantors and their dedication to our parish and the music program. FORGIVENESS OF SINS Isaiah announced the word of the Lord: See, I am doing something new! (Isaiah 43:19). And what was this new thing? A promise for a people who did not call upon me and grew weary of me (43:22); a promise of forgiveness. It is I, I, who wipe out... your offenses; / your sins I remember no more (43:25). Paul told the Corinthians and tells us that Jesus is God s yes, and that all God s promises are fulfilled in Jesus. Does that include God s promise to forgive sins? Mark gives the answer when he relates how some people lowered a paralytic through a hole in the roof, seeking a cure. As far as we can tell, no one requested forgiving the man s sins. But that s what Jesus did, exactly as Isaiah had announced. Then, lest anyone doubt his authority on earth to forgive sins, Jesus said, Pick up your mat, and go home (Mark 2:11). The man rose, picked up his mat at once, and went away (2:12).
