From the RAbbi THE WORLD ZIONIST CONGRESS IS ALIVE AND WELL DON T FORGET TO VOTE! At one of the conferences I attended recently there was a panel discussion. A representative of AIPAC and a representative of JStreet both spoke one about the necessity of keeping US military aid for Israel strong and one about the necessity of Jews working together to support Israel s work toward peace without descending to name calling. Then a Reform Rabbi from Tel Aviv spoke. I feel like I m in a different movie than the one you re watching. Rabbi Meir Azari told us the most important thing Americans can do for Israel is to support progressive, pluralistic Israeli organizations like the Israeli counterparts of Reform and Conservative Judaism The Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism and The Masorti Movement, respectively as well as the several modern orthodox streams. His argument is that Israel s greatest threat being wiped off the face of the earth is linked to religious fundamentalism of all stripes. The World Zionist Congress first met in Basel Switzerland in 1897. The goal was to build an infrastructure to support Jewish settlement in what was then called Palestine. Since the founding of the State of Israel in 1948 the Congress meets every four or five years in Jerusalem. It is the voice of Jews who do not live in Israel, and its present goal is to provide policies for the World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency. These policies decide which organizations in Israel are supported by the money from the diaspora that the WZO oversees. There is a WZC election going on right now until April. Voting qualifications are that you are at least 18 and you belong to a Zionist organization. Please, please, please go online, join the American Reform Zionist Organization (ARZA), or the Conservative Zionist organization: arza.org mercazusa.org There are other options as well, but I ll leave you to discover them on your own if you re interested. Voting costs $10 - only $5 if you re under 30. So VOTE! Your vote helps decide how the 145 US seats are filled and ultimately how diaspora funds are distributed in Israel. When we look at the massive challenges facing Israel and the Middle East, it is easy to lose hope. However, that is not an option for Jews. We each do what we can to guide events in the right direction. The only offense is not to try. May your winter be a place from which new growth and promise will spring for us, for all Israel, and for all the world. Rabbi Jean E. Eglinton 2 February 2015

Box 2674 Huntington, WV 25726-2674 Federated Jewish Charities of Huntington WV France Emergency Fund We are horrified and profoundly saddened by the two terror attacks in Paris, including the brutal murder of four members of the French Jewish community in a deadly siege at the Hyper Cacher kosher market. The Jewish Federations of North America has been tracking and responding to events in Paris as they occur. In coordination with the Israeli Prime Minister's Office and the Service de protection de la communauté juive in France, we are working to ensure that local Jewish institutions, schools and synagogues as well as French Jewish citizens are protected from further attacks. We are painfully aware that these callous and cowardly acts are not isolated incidents. Rather, they are the latest in a series of increasingly disturbing and violent attacks, including the 2012 Toulouse school shooting and multiple attacks during Operation Protective Edge last summer. These events have increased the security concerns of French Jewry and also led to a dramatic rise in immigration of French Jews to Israel. Federations across North America must stand in solidarity with France and the French Jewish community. These shocking events make it abundantly clear that Jews around the world face a unique and elevated threat to their security from global terrorism and that our on going support is critically needed. We ask you to please make a donation to help French Jews meet their increased security needs and to aid the victims families as they recover from this tragedy. We thank you in advance for your generosity. Federated Jewish Charities of Huntington P.O. Box 947 Huntington, WV 25713 France Emergency Fund Name: Address: Donation: $ 15 February 2015
