Spiritual and Gift Part 1: The word spiritual πνευµατικός Romanized pneumatikos Pronounced pnyoo-mat-ik-os' Non-carnal, i.e. (humanly) ethereal (as opposed to gross), or (demonically) a spirit (concretely), or (divinely) supernatural, regenerate, religious. Connotes the idea of invisibility and power. It is a word not used in the Bible until after Pentecost. Pertaining to the spirit, spiritual. A. Used for angelic host [lower than God but higher than man in natural state]: Eph. 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual [pneumatikos] wickedness in high places. B. Used for things having their origin with God and, therefore, are in harmony with His character: Rom. 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual [pneumatikos]: but I am carnal, sold under sin. C. Spiritual. What the type sets forth, not the type itself, is indicated. Emphasis upon source: 1 Cor. 10:3-4 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all eat the same spiritual [pneumatikos] meat; And did all drink the same spiritual [pneumatikos] drink: for they drank of that spiritual [pneumatikos] Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. Rev. 11:8 And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which is allegorically [pneumatikos] [in a spiritual sense] called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was crucified. D. Spiritual. Purposes of God revealed by Holy Spirit. The words in which that revelation is expressed. Emphasis upon type:

1 Cor. 2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things [pneumatikos] with spiritual [pneumatikos]. Eph. 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual [pneumatikos] songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. Col. 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual [pneumatikos] songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Col. 1:9 And so, from the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual [pneumatikos] wisdom and understanding, 1 Peter 2:2. Like newborn babes, long for the pure spiritual[pneumatikos] milk, that by it you may grow up to salvation. E. Used for men in Christ who walk in a manner pleasing to God: Gal. 6:1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual [pneumatikos], restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. 1 Cor. 2:13,15 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who possess the Spirit [pneumatikos]. The spiritual man [pneumatikos] judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. 1 Cor. 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual [pneumatikos], but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 1 Cor. 14:37 If any one thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual [pneumatikos], he should acknowledge that what I am writing to you is a command of the Lord. F. Used for the whole body of Christ, a spiritual house: 1 Peter 2:5. Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual [pneumatikos] house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual [pneumatikos] sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. G. Used for the blessings that accrue to regenerate men at present time: Rom. 15:27 It hath pleased them verily; and their debtors they are. For if the Gentiles have been made partakers of their spiritual things [pneumatikos], their duty is also to minister unto them in carnal things.

Romans 1:11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual [pneumatikos] gift [guide], to the end ye may be established. 1 Cor. 9:11 If we have sown spiritual good [pneumatikos] among you, is it too much if we reap your material benefits? Eph. 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual [pneumatikos ] blessings in heavenly places in Christ. H. Used for the activities Godward of regenerate men; also the appointed activities [spiritual gifts] in the Church: 1 Peter 2:5. Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual [pneumatikos] house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual [pneumatikos] sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts [pneumatikos], brethren, I would not have you ignorant. 1 Corinthians 14:1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts [pneumatikos], but rather that ye may prophesy. I. Used for the resurrected body: 1 Corinthians 15:44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual [pneumatikos] body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual [pneumatikos] body. J. Used for all that is produced and maintained by the Spirit of God: 1 Corinthians 15:46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual [pneumatikos], but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual [pneumatikos]. 1 Corinthians 2:14 The unspiritual man does not receive the gifts of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually [pneumatikos] discerned. Other verses related to the person led by the Spirit: Gal. 5:16, 25. Part 2: The word gift Χάρις [root of charisma--gift] Romanized charis Pronounced khar'-ece Graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act (abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life;

including gratitude); acceptable, benefit, favour, gift, grace, gracious, joy, liberality, pleasure, thank, thanks, worthy of thanks. Xάρισµα Romanized charisma Pronounced khar'-is-mah A (divine) gratuity, i.e. deliverance (from danger or passion); (specifically) a (spiritual) endowment, i.e. (subjectively) religious qualification, or (objectively) miraculous faculty A gift of grace; a gift involving grace. A. A gift freely and graciously given; a favor bestowed: Rom. 5:15,16 But the free gift [charisma] is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift [charis] (gratuity/gift) in the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift (bestowment/gift) is not like the effect of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift [charisma] following many trespasses brings justification. Rom. 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift [charisma] of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Rom. 11:29 For the gifts [charisma] and the call of God are irrevocable. B. His endowments upon believers by the operation of the Holy Spirit in the churches: Rom. 1:11,12 For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift [charisma] to strengthen you, that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine. Rom. 12:6 Having gifts [charisma] that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith 1 Cor. 1:4-7 I give thanks to God always for you because of the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him with all speech and all knowledge--even as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you--so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift [charis], as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Cor. 12:4 Now there are varieties of gifts [charisma], but the same Spirit. 1 Cor. 12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts [charisma] of healing by the one Spirit.

1 Cor. 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, then miracles, then gifts [charisma] of healings, helps, governments, divers kinds of tongues. 1 Cor. 12:30,31 Have all gifts [charisma] of healings? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? But desire earnestly the greater gifts [charisma]. And moreover a most excellent way show I unto you. 1 Tim. 4:14 Do not neglect the gift [charisma] you have, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands upon you. 2 Tim. 1:6 Hence I remind you to rekindle the gift [charisma] of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands. 1 Peter. 4:10 As each has received a gift [charisma], employ it for one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace. C. Used of the natural gift of continence [self-restraint from sexual activity], consequent upon the grace of God: 1 Cor. 7:7 I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own special gift [charisma] from God, one of one kind and one of another. D. Used of gracious deliverance granted in response to believers prayers: 2 Cor. 1:11 You also must help us by prayer, so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing [charisma] granted us in answer to many prayers. Part 3: The word gift / free gift δωρεá Romanized dorea Pronounced do-reh-ah Denotes a free gift, stressing its gratuitous character. Always used in the N.T. of a spiritual or supernatural gift; a gratuity. John 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift [dorea] of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. Acts 2: 38. And Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift [dorea] of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 8:19,20. [Simon] saying, "Give me also this power, that any one on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit." But Peter said to him, "Your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift [dorea] of God with money! Acts 10:45. And the believers from among the circumcised who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift [dorea] of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. Acts 11:17. If then God gave the same gift [dorea] to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?" Rom. 5:15. But the free gift [dorea] is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift [dorea] in the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16. And the free gift [dorea] is not like the effect of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift [dorea] following many trespasses brings justification. 17. If, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift [dorea] of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. 2 Cor. 9:1 14. While they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God in you. 15. Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift [dorea]! Eph. 3:7 Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift [dorea] of God's grace which was given me by the working of his power. Eph. 4:7 But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift [dorea]. Heb. 6:4 4. For it is impossible to restore again to repentance those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift [dorea], and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit,
