They are proud of the role they represent and the service to which they are called, said Antonio Paolucci, director of the Vatican Museums, however, they are also young men in their twenties with the same dreams, enthusiasm, and hope that any 20-year-old has. It is an exhibition showing a noble and ancient story, but it also speaks of the beautiful youth of a group of young men who are at the service of the Roman Pontiff, said Paolucci. The exhibit will also feature some of the uniforms and weapons used by the force and will be open until June 11th with plans to then take it to other countries including the US.- 6 The Swiss Guard photographic exhibition
7 mangiare THE PATRONS OF THE ARTS IN THE VATICAN MUSEUMS, OHIO CHAPTER / SPRING 2016 The Ohio Chapter is currently working with the Vatican Office to bring the exhibit to Cleveland in 2017. Dr. Romina Cometti and Fr. Mark Haydu at the Swiss Guard Exhibit Dulce de Leche The Swiss Guards at the Vatican don t just protect the pope; they cook for him, too. A newly released cookbook by the Vatican s corps of elite soldiers reveals some of the favorite pontifical recipes, informing us that Pope Francis eats like a fairly typical Argentinean: He loves a good steak, empanadas and he has a sweet tooth, one of his favorite desserts is dulce de leche. The literal translation is candy of milk. INGREDIENTS: 10 ½ cups whole milk 4 cups sugar ¼ tsp baking soda ½ vanilla bean 3 Tbs Cognac Boil the milk and the sugar in a pot until the sugar is completely dissolved. Pour the mixture through cheesecloth into a deep pot. Let the mixture cook over low heat for about an hour, stirring often, and being careful the mixture does not boil over. After approximately one hour the mixture should become dark, thick and syrupy. Split open the vanilla bean and add the vanilla bean, baking soda and Cognac to the milk mixture. Reduce heat and continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the mixture reaches the desired consistency. Remove the vanilla bean. Pour the mixture into dessert cups and set aside until it comes to room temperature. As it cools, the milk mixture will thicken to the texture of honey. Stir one more time before serving with a spoon. Serves 4
