GOLIATH Must Fall COVENANT Text: 1 Sam 17:23-26 Here s my anchor thought: Walking in victory tomorrow is positioned by the decisions I make today. Intro: Good morning and welcome home to restoration life Christian church. For the last 6 weeks we have embarked on an amazing journey through the famous story of David and Goliath. For those of you who are new to this series and to restoration life this Giant that the bible calls Goliaths represents and obstacle that must be conquered in our lives. I m talking about bad habits, morals failures, hurts, un-forgiveness, violations from the past and most importantly the sin that taunts us & we all live and deal with every day of our lives. This GOLIATH MUST FALL! The last 2 weeks we talked about how God uses process to promote us. Before promotion you must walk through a place of contention. You and I must contend with your giant and gain victory over it before the anointing is released to manifest in a greater measure of authority. 1. God anointed what was tested in David s life. David was tested with a Lion and a bear. When God saw His heart he was well please with what he saw and anointed David king over Israel but the mantle was not yet His to rule. Before we can step into the next level God has for us, we will have to face our Goliath head on and take it down. 1

2. Our next level will not come without a fight. Understand this about your giant, it will speak to you. It will try to intimidate, limit and constrain you from possessing what is yours in God. 3. It will speak to you with words like Who do you think you are? You think God has a destiny for you? You think God will ever use you? 4. The words you hear will be in relation to the area of battle you are facing. Do you really think You think you ll ever be free of me? Do you really think things can & will change? Things are never going to change. You are going to keep going around this mountain. You re nothing. Just give up and quit! 5. These are the lies, these are the taunts, these are the empty threats that he makes day in and day out. But they are empty and I ll show you why. We have a lot of ground to cover this morning so lets get in this. Lets get right to it. Text: 1 Sam 17:23-26 As they talked, behold, Goliath, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, came forth from the Philistine ranks and spoke the same words as before, and David heard him. And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, terrified. And the Israelites said, Have you seen this man who has come out? Surely he has come out to defy Israel; and the man who kills him the king will enrich with great riches, and will give him his daughter and make his father's house free [from taxes and service] in Israel. And David said to the men standing by him, What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God? Open in Prayer: God I know that you have made a covenant promise with us those whom you call sons and daughters, 2

I pray that in the name that is above all names Jesus Christ that we would open our ears to hear and our hearts to receive what your word and covenant promises declare to all of us that are born again blood bought children of God. I want us to see something in this text I. A SUSTAINABLE ANOINTING AND BREAKTHROUGH 1. Those that God will move to a higher realm of authority need to understand that a sustainable anointing and mantle is not possible without testing and trial. a. Anointing without testing is not sustainable. God doesn t want to just give us a temporary anointing or a momentary breakthrough. He wants us to be able to sustain it. The sustainability factor is crucial in our hour. We must contend for increase and sustain it. 2. Promotion comes out of your testing which we have called process. a. Smaller battles will make you skillful in winning larger battles. Because the areas of your greatest testing are about to become the areas of your greatest anointing! The very assignments the adversary had against your life are about to be turned around against him. God is going to release His anointing and glory where you have had the deepest level of warfare and contending. 3. As Isaac was entering into his land of inheritance. a. In Genesis 26, we see that his land started in a place of barrenness. As he planted and sowed seed in that land, he became very prosperous and fruitful. God accelerated his harvest and in the same year reaped one 3

hundred fold. But God still had more increase for him 4. The Philistines envied him and began to bury the wells of Abraham. a. In order for Isaac to breakthrough to a higher level of fruitfulness in his inheritance he had to contend with the Philistines. As he dug wells the first one was called Esek, meaning contention. The next well was called Sitnah meaning enmity. The third well was called Rehoboth meaning room. My Point: As Isaac persevered and endured, God made room for him to be fruitful in the land. The key for Isaac s breakthrough was endurance. As we endure through a place of contention, God will make room for us and will cause us to be fruitful in our land of inheritance. Increase and promotion is coming, but not without a fight. In order to win this battle we must endure to the end. 5. We are in a time where many are facing their Goliaths. a. We are in a time of spiritual pressure and resistance. Depending on what we do in this battle will determine our next season. Either we will sustain what God has given us and experience an increase or we could lose what has been entrusted to us. 6. Usually the greatest fight is right before the greatest breakthrough. a. This is usually when people give up. They are right on the edge of moving to the next level when they get weary and tired. As long as you refuse to give up, God will make sure you step 4

into your next level of inheritance. b. But how is all of this possible pastor? How can you say that He has promised us these things. How can I believe that Go really is going to heal me How can I believe that he is going to give me the strength to take on my Goliath? How can I know for sure without doubt that If I step out in faith and trust God and hold Him to his word he wont fail me and hurt me like others have? c. The reason that I can say all of this with full assurance and faith in God is because II. God has made a covenant with us 1. A COVENANT is an agreement between two people or two groups that involves promises on the part of each to the other. a. The concept of covenant between God and His people is one of the most important theological truths of the Bible. A covenant, in the biblical sense, implies much more than a contract or simple agreement. Another difference is that a contract generally involves only one part of a person, such as a skill, while a covenant covers a person's total being. A contract always has an end date, while a covenant is a permanent arrangement. Illustrations of Covenant: 1. The covenant with Abraham, This covenant came with a promise of fruitfulness and blessing. Not only did God say that he would be a father of a nation but as a sign of promise and inheritance every child would be circumcised to keep this covenant with God as a representation Genesis 17:1-11 17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am God Almighty a ; walk before me and be blameless. 2 I will confirm my covenant between me and you 5

and will greatly increase your numbers." 3 Abram fell facedown, and God said to him, 4 "As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. 5 No longer will you be called Abram b ; your name will be Abraham, c for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. 7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 8 The whole land of Canaan, where you are now an alien, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God." 9 Then God said to Abraham, "As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come. 10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. 11 You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. My Point is that God s covenant with his people does not have an expiration date. Illustration: 2. The Covenant with Noah. In this covenant God assured Noah that judgment would not again come to men in the form of a flood; Genesis 9:11-15 NIV 1 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth." 12 And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. My Point God will always leave us a sign of His Covenant. This is awesome when you think about our time of communion. 6

3. The covenant with Joshua and the Israel. Circumcision, During the journey through the wilderness, the practice of circumcision fell into disuse, but was resumed by the command of Joshua before they entered the Promised Land. Joshua 5:2-9 2. At that time the LORD said to Joshua, "Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again." 3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth. a 4 Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt, all the men of military age died in the desert on the way after leaving Egypt. 5 All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the desert during the journey from Egypt had not. 6 The Israelites had moved about in the desert forty years until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the LORD. For the LORD had sworn to them that they would not see the land that he had solemnly promised their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. 7 So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way. 8 And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed. 9 Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." So the place has been called Gilgal b to this day. My Point God will renew His covenant with those that prepared to cutaway the areas of life that represent a time of Disobedience. 2. So why did Goliath s word inspire fear in everyone else, but faith in David? a. What was the difference? Notice the way David addressed Goliath an un-circumsized Philistine. 1 Samuel 17:26 NKJV v 26 Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, "What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?" Everyone in the natural lineage of Abraham, entered into that 7

same covenant through circumcision. God had promised Abraham that anyone who blessed him, He would bless, and anyone who cursed him, He would curse. David realized that because he was a circumcised descendant of Abraham, he had all the benefits of Abraham s covenant with God. And Guess what? All of Israel did too, but they just didn t believe it or walk in the light of it. Goliath had not entered into any such covenant with God, and so he was defenseless against David and God! 3. IOW So When David addressed Goliath as an uncircumcised Philistine, What Davis was actually saying was. Who is this clown that has no right to speak to us this way, Who has no place of authority, Who has no anointing and who has no promise from God I want to Close: Altar Call Then David spoke to the men who were standing by him, saying, What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should taunt the armies of the living God?'ʹ 1 Samuel 17:26 (NASB) As you read through the biblical account of what has become commonly labeled David & Goliath in 1 Samuel 17, carefully note what each person says followed by how David responds. Everyone else states the situation in earthly terms, from Goliath s intimidating stature to offering earthly rewards to anyone who overcomes him. But in each case, David re-states the situation using spiritual terms instead of earthly. 8

He makes it known that the issue is not how man sees and approaches the situation, but God. Whereas Goliath called them servants of Saul, [1] David reminds them that actually they re the armies of the living God. Whereas everyone describes Goliath s awesome physical attributes accompanied by formidable armor and weapons, David describes him simply as uncircumcised, a way of stating that this is merely someone that has no personal nor covenant relationship with the One True God. The odds are close to 100% that whenever we experience fear and anxiety that our focus is fixed on all the earthly factors. The situation is so overwhelming and the obstacles so impossibly huge that there is no human hope of victory. This is why it s called a test of faith, to find out if we ll see things with God s eyes and act accordingly. Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21 (NASB) The real moral of the David and Goliath story is that Christians don t fight FOR victory, but FROM victory. Here s my anchor thought: Walking in victory tomorrow is positioned by the decisions I make today. GOLIATH MUST FALL! 9
