1 Junior Learner s Manual September 4, 2011 God s Covenant with Man Lesson Objective Bible Principle Parallel Passage I will know God made a covenant with Noah. God gave man permission to kill animals for food, but man must never kill another man. In the Image of God Genesis 9:2-6 Memory Verse: Whoso sheddeth man s blood, by man shall his blood be shed. Genesis 9:6 The Rainbow Seals the Covenant Genesis 9:1-17 God may change the way He deals with people because they change their opinions, attitudes and life-styles. God does what He knows is necessary to get people back on the right path. God caused a flood to cover the earth as a judgment of wickedness in Noah s time. After the flood, God made a covenant with Noah and all people who would live after his time. God promised Noah He would never again cause a flood to cover the entire earth. God guaranteed the covenant or agreement with Noah by placing a rainbow in the earth s atmosphere after rain. He promised every time people on the earth saw a rainbow that He would be remembering His covenant. The covenant God made with Noah is called the Noahic Covenant. A covenant is a binding agreement or a promise between two or more parties especially for the performance of some action. A covenant can have rules or be without rules. A covenant with rules is an agreement that requires all persons to do certain things. God promises He will do certain things if the people will do certain things. A covenant without rules is an agreement by God to do certain things without the other person or persons doing anything. The covenant God made with Noah was a covenant without rules. Before the flood, humans only ate plants as food. After the flood, God made two rules for the new diet. First, God permitted humans to kill animals, fish and birds for food. Second, people could not eat or drink the blood of anything because life is in the blood of all creatures. People could not kill each other because man is made in God s image. Following the flood, God said, At the hand of every man s brother will I require the life of man. God gave the power and the authority to end the life of a murderer to the blood avenger the nearest male relative of the dead person. Only he was responsible for taking the life of the murderer. Later, God changed these instructions. He put the authority for capital punishment under the Law He gave His people Israel. The murderer was stoned by all the people. Still later, God put the authority for punishing the murderer in the power of government. Today, governments have the responsibility to make laws to execute murderers. 3 Lesson 1

NOAHIC COVENANT A covenant is a binding agreement or promise between two or more people to perform some particular action. God made covenants, or promises, with several individuals in Bible times. Some covenants were made with rules and regulations. Those were conditional covenants. Some were made without any rules or regulations. Those were unconditional covenants. The covenant that God made with Noah was an unconditional covenant. Read Genesis 9:9-17. Write your answer to each question. 1. What was God s covenant with Noah? 2. What was God s covenant with Noah s descendants? 3. What was God s covenant with all living creatures? Lesson 1 4

CHANGES GOD MADE God gave man permission to kill animals for food, but He forbade man to kill another man. The Noahic Covenant established human government as being responsible for punishing murderers. This provision was made to keep order in a sinful world. God wants each person to respect the lives of others because all people are created in God s image. Read the verses below. Compare God s rules for punishing murderers. Blood Avenger Read Genesis 9:5, 6. What rule did God give Noah about punishing the murderer? Capital Punishment Read Romans 13:1-5. What is God s rule for punishing murderers today? Read Exodus 20:13; 21:12-14. What rule did God give Moses about punishing the murderer? Read Romans 13:1-5. What rulers or higher powers bear the sword and execute punishment on murderers today? Read Joshua 20:1-9. What rule did God restate to Joshua about punishing the person who killed another person without planning it? What usually happens to murderers today? Write why you think God approves or does not approve of that. 5 Lesson 1

I will always respect other people s right to life. 1 Crossword Puzzle Read the clues across and down. Fill in the correct answer.
