GOOD FRIDAY Palm Sunday is Trojan Horse of church calendar. Fleming Rutledge Palm Sunday is beginning of Holy Week, seven days of Church calendar that culminate on Easter Sunday. During Holy Week, Church reenters last week of Jesus life. Palm Sunday is fun. We get to wave palm fronds and shout with joy. Palm Sunday is a day that Americans can all get behind. But if we read gospels closely, we discover that Palm Sunday brings with it a dark battle. On Palm Sunday, Jesus came into Jerusalem with one goal in mind: to suffer and die for people he loves very dearly. Nowhere do we see his suffering so acutely as on Good Friday. On Good Friday, we commemorate day that Jesus was betrayed and abandoned by his friends, was tortured and beaten by Roman authorities, and was crucified on a cross, having his pleas for mercy fall on Far s deaf ears. Good Friday is stark and ruthless. At same time, Good Friday, is also a profound and gracious gift from God to us. Tonight, we will consider Jesus last recorded words leading up to his death. Throughout church history, we have come to know se expressions of Jesus to be seven last words of Christ. If we listen carefully to Jesus dying words, we will find him overflowing with grace towards us. For, if we let biblical story shape our imaginations, we will know that he died for us. In or words, he died with us in mind. Because this is true, Good Friday is a sobering event. It is, however, full of God s mercy and hope. Let us worship! WORSHIP SERVICES Sundays, 9:00 am and 11:30 am Meeting in Volunteer Park Seventhday Adventist church building (1300 E Aloha St). NURSERY + GRACE KIDS Available for 6 months to 4 years during service. FRIDAY, APRIL 3, 2015 GOOD FRIDAY INTRODUCTION PRELUDE Sonata I ("Pater, dimitte illis, quia nesciunt, quid faciunt") S T A N D I N G Franz Joseph Haydn, 1787 Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for duration of worship service. Text in bold italics is read toger by entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of worship service leaders. INVITATION Dear friends, we have come toger at this solemn moment in life of church to reflect on sufferings of our Lord in his last days and to dwell on our own shortcomings and human failings. Our hearts are great with sorrow and contrition as we pray forgiveness for errors of our foolish and arrogant ways. The darkness covers us all, and our spirits are brought low. Come, n, let us walk in shadows. Come n, let us seek light. The song text below is given for reflection. INVITATORY PSALM Psalm 95 Come let us sing to Lord; let us shout for joy to Rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving and raise a loud shout to him with psalms. For Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are caverns of earth, and heights of hills are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands have molded dry land. Come, let us bow down, and bend knee, and kneel before Lord our Maker. For he is our God, and we are people of his pasture and sheep of his hand. Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice! Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God and each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. CONFESSION OF SIN Psalm 51:17 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from iniquity, and cleanse me from sin! For I know transgressions, and sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did mor conceive me. Behold, you delight in truth in inward being, and you teach me wisdom in secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. (You are invited to personalize your confession as you pray silently.) O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 2
RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Isaiah 53 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to self, that where I am you may be also. And you know way to where I am going. THE FOURTH WORD I AM THIRSTY Isaiah 55:15 Come, everyone who thirsts, come to waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, steadfast, sure love for David. Behold, I made him a witness to peoples, a leader and commander for peoples. Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know, and a nation that did not know you shall run to you, because of LORD your God, and of Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Jesus, you claim to be way, truth, and life. Grant that I might be undaunted by cost of following you as I consider reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to life that you promise. Amen. THE FIFTH WORD MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME? Psalm 22:15, 11 My God, God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from words of groaning? O God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest. Yet you are holy, enthroned on praises of Israel. In you our fars trusted; y trusted, and you delivered m. To you y cried and were rescued; in you y trusted and were not put to shame. Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and re is none to help. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you fulfillment of all need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance race set before me, looking to you, author and perfecter of faith. Amen. HOMILY Words from Throne of Grace Rev. John Haralson INTERLUDE Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying debt, bearing punishment on cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from dead, I turn from sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. OFFERING Sonata VI ("Consummatum est!") Franz Joseph Haydn, 1787 Proceeds from tonight s offering will go to Deacons Fund, dedicated to helping those facing financial hardship in our community. THE SIXTH WORD IT IS FINISHED Luke 13:3135 At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you. And he said to m, Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and third day I finish course. Neverless, I must go on way today and tomorrow and day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, city that kills prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gared your children toger as a hen gars her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, Blessed is he who comes in name of Lord! The song text below is given for reflection. Jesus, Lover of Soul Jesus, lover of soul, let me to Thy bosom fly. While nearer waters roll, and tempest still is high: Hide me, O Savior, hide, Till storm of life is past; Safe into haven guide; O receive soul at last. THE SEVENTH WORD FATHER, INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT. Luke 2:2935 Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel. And his far and his mor marveled at what was said about him. And Simeon blessed m and said to Mary his mor, Behold, this child is appointed for fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed. THE STRIPPING OF THE CHURCH Good Friday is a day to meditate especially on Cross, where Jesus Christ gave his life for his people. It is day in Holy Week set aside for sober reflection on our sins which cost him his life. In keeping with sober me of this event, service will conclude in darkness and silence. This putting out of lights dates from fifth century, and was treated as a sort of funeral service, or dirge, commemorating death of Jesus Christ. Please observe complete silence in sanctuary, narx, and parking lot as you leave. PSALM 22 To choirmaster: according to The Doe of Dawn. A Psalm of David. My God, God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, from words of groaning? O God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest. Yet you are holy, enthroned on praises of Israel. In you our fars trusted; y trusted, and you delivered m. To you y cried and were rescued; in you y trusted and were not put to shame. But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and despised by people. All who see me mock me; y make mouths at me; y wag ir heads; He trusts in LORD; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him! Yet you are he who took me from womb; you made me trust you at mor s breasts. On you was I cast from birth, and from mor s womb you have been God. Be not far from me, for trouble is near, and re is none to help. Many bulls encompass me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me; y open wide ir mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all bones are out of joint; heart is like wax; it is melted within breast; strength is dried up like a potsherd, and tongue sticks to jaws; you lay me in dust of death. For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; y have pierced hands and feet I can count all bones y stare and gloat over me; y divide garments among m, and for clothing y cast lots. But you, O LORD, do not be far off! O you help, come quickly to aid! Deliver soul from sword, precious life from power of dog! Save me from mouth of lion! You have rescued me from horns of wild oxen! I will tell of your name to brors; in midst of congregation I will praise you: You who fear LORD, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! For he has not despised or abhorred affliction of afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him. From you comes praise in great congregation; vows I will perform before those who fear him. The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise LORD! May your hearts live forever! All ends of earth shall remember and turn to LORD, and all families of nations shall worship before you. For kingship belongs to LORD, and he rules over nations. All prosperous of earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to dust, even one who could not keep himself alive. Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of LORD to coming generation; y shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it.
