The Names of Prophet Muhammad Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam From Tahtheebu Al Asmaa-e Wa Al llughaate By Al Imamu Al Nnawawee Translated by Dr. Hassan Sheikh Hussein Osman, DVM

From: Tahtheebu Al Asmaa-e Wa Al llughaate (Volume one: see Muhammad, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam) By Imam Al Nawawe Al Nnawawee said: "Narrated ibnu 'Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him and his father: "The Messenger of Allaah, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, said: "Esmee fee Al Quraane Muhammadun wa fee Al Enjeele Ahmadun wa fee Al Tawraate Aheedun wa ennamaa summeetu Aheedan le annee aheedu ummatee 'an naare Jahannama." The meaning of the Hadeeth is: "My name in the Quran is Muhammad, and in the Enjeel (The Book revealed to Prophet Essa, the son of Maryama, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam) Ahmad, and in the Tawraat (The Book revealed to Prophet Moses, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam) Aheedun. And I was named Aheedun because I turn my Nation away from the Fire of Jahannama" The Messenger of Allaah, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, has a large number of names, collected in a chapter of his book "Taareekhu Dimashaq" or "The History of Damascus" by Al Emaamu al haafethu Aboo Al Qaasimu 'Alee bin Al Hasan ben Hebbatu Allaahe bin 'Abdu Allaahe al shaafe'ee, al Dimashqee known as ibnu Al 'Asaaker, may Allaah have mercy on him. He mentioned in this chapter a large number of names, some of which a reported also in Al Bukhaaree and Muslim, and others in other Hadeeth books. Some of these names are: Muahammad, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (One) Muahammadu: "the one praised and thanked by every one, as in Aayah two of Sooratu Muhammad: "But those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, and believe in (the revelation) sent down to Muhammad-for it is The Truth from their Lord,-He will remove from them their ills and improve their condition(47:2)." Ahmadu, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Two) Ahmadu: "The one who praises his Lord most, as in Aayah six of Sooratu Al Saff: "And remember, Jesus, the son of Mary, said: "O children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allaah sent to you, and I confirm the Tawraat which came before me, and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmadu. But when he came to them with clear signs, they said: "This is evident sorcery!(61:6)."

Al Haasheru, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Three) Al Haasheru: "The Gatherer, because all people are gathered after him. He is the first to be present at the gathering place, and all people are following him." In the Hadeeth of Huthayfah in al Bukhaaree in his History Book and Al Tarmethee and ibnu Sa'd the following names are mentioned: "Ahmadu, wa Muhammadun, wa Al Haasheru wa Al Muqaffee wa Nabeyyu Al Rrahmah", which mean: "Ahmadu and Muhammadu and Al Haasheru and Al Muqaffee and Nabeyyu Al Rrahmah", which mean: " Al 'Aaqebu, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Four) Al 'Aaqebu: "The last Prophet and there is no Prophet after him." See the Hadeeth in Al Maahee. Al Muqaffee, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Five) Al Muqaffee: "The follower of the Prophets, because he was the last of them." (Hadeeth of Huthayfah in al Bukhaaree in his History Book) Al Maahee, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Six) Al Maahee: "The Eraser, the one Allaah erases disbelief with, as narrated in the Hadeeth of Muhammad ben Jubayr ben Mut'em that the Prophet, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, said: "Anaa Muhammad, wa anaa Ahmad, wa anaa al Maahee allathee yamhoo Allaahu beya al kufra, wa anaa Al Haasheru allathee yuh-sharu al nnaasu 'alaa qadamayya, waa anaa Al 'Aaqebu", which means: "I am Muhammad, and I am Ahmad, and I am Al Maahee the Eraser, the one Allaah erases disbelief with, and I am Al Haasheru The Gatherer, for the people will gathered behind me, and I am Al 'Aaqebu the Last Prophet and there are no Prophets after me." The Hadeeth is reported by Al Bukhaaree and Muslim. Khaatema Al Anbeyaa-e, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Seven) Khaatema Al Anbeyaa-e: "The seal of the Prophets, as in Aayah 40 of Sooratu Al Ahzaab: "Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is The Messenger of Allaah, and The seal of the Prophets, and Allaah has full knowledge of all things(33:40)." Nabeyya Al Rrahmata, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Eight) Nabeyya Al Rrahmata: "The Prophet of Mercy", as in Aayah 107 of Sooratu Al Anbeyaa: "We sent you not, but as a mercy all creatures(21:107), and in the Hadeeth of Aboo Moosaa by Muslim and others as well)

Nabeyya Al Malhamah, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Nine) Nabeyya Al Malhamah and in another reporting in the plural form of Nabeyya Al Malaahem: "The Prophet of the war, and in another narration "The Prophet of the wars." It is narrated by Aboo Moosaa and reported by Muslim. No Prophet before him Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, waged jehaad against the disbeliever's like he and his Ummah did and they will fight against them until they kill Al Maseehu Al Dajjaale before the end of this world. Nabeyya Al Tawbah, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Ten) Nabeyya Al Tawbah: "The Prophet of the repentance, as narrated in the Hadeeth of Aboo Moosaa reported by Muslim: "Wa anaa Nabeyyu Al Tawbah" which means: "And I am the Prophet of the repentance." Al Faatehu, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Eleven) Al Faatehu: "The Victorious, for he opened countries to Islam, such as Makkah and other countries. Al Faatehu also means the Opener, since he opens the door of the jannah, and he opened blind eyes, deaf ears and locked hearts to Islam." Aboo Hurayrah in his Hadeeth on the Night of Ascension narrated by Al Rrabee'u ben Anas said: "Allaah said to the Prophet Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam: "Wa ja'altuka Faatehan wa Khaateman!" which means: "And I made you the First of the Prophets and the last one of them." Narrated Aboo Hurayrah also in his Hadeeth on the Night of Ascension that the Prophet Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam said: "Wa ja'alanee Faatehan wa Khaateman!" which means: "And He made me the first of the Prophets and the last one of them as well." Taahaa, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Twelve) Taahaa: "As in Aayah one of Soorah Taahaa: " Taahaa(20:1)." This name is reported in the Hadeeth of Al Naqqaashu that the Prophet, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam said: "Lee fee Al Quraane sab'atu asmaa'en: Muhammad, wa Ahmad, wa Yaaseen, wa Taahaa, wa Al Muzammel, wa Al Mudath-ther, wa 'Abdu Allaahe", which means: "I have in the Quraan seven names: Muhammad, and Ahmad, and Yaaseen, and Taahaa, and Al Muzammel, and Al Mudath-ther, and 'Abdu Allaahe." Yaaseen, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Thirteen) Yaaseen: "As Aayah one of Sooratu Yaaseen: " Yaaseen (36:1)", and as reported in the Hadeeth of ibnu Marduwayh and Aboo Nu'aym: "narrated Aboo Muhammad Makkee ben Abee Taaleb ben Muhammad Al Qaysee that the Prophet, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, said: "Lee 'enda

Rabbee 'ashratu Asmaa-en: anaa Muhammadun, wa Ahmadu, wa Al Faatehu, wa Al Khaatemu, wa Aboo Al Qaasemu, wa Al Haasheru, wa Al 'Aaqebu, wa Al Maahee, wa Yaaseen, wa Taahaa." The Hadeeth means: "I have with my Lord ten names: I am Muhammad, and Ahmadu, and Al Faatehu, and Al Khaatemu, and Aboo Al Qaasemu (which means The father of Qaasem, and Qaasem was the first born son of the Prophet, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam), and Al Haasheru, and Al 'aaqebu, and Al Maahee, and Yaaseen, and Taahaa." 'Abdu Allaahe, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Fourteen) 'Abdu Allaahe: "The slave of Allaah, as in Aayah 23 of Sooratu Al Baqarah: "And if you are in doubt as to what We have revealed from time to time to our slave then produce a Soorah like thereunto(2:23)." Allaah called His Prophet Muhammad, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, "His slave" in many other Aayah of the Quraan." Al Imaamu al haafethu Aboo Bakr Ahmad ben Al Husayn ben 'Alee Al Bayhaqee, may Allaah have mercy on him said: "some scholars added to that and said: "Allah, Subhaanahu wa Ta'aalaa, called him, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, in the Quraan: Rasoolan, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (fifteen) Rasoolan: "A Messenger: Allaah Most High addressed him as Rasoolan and Nabeyyan in the Quraan and never called him by his given name as he did with other Prophets." Nabeyyan Ummeyyan, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Sixteen) Nabeyyan Ummeyyan: "The unlettered Prophet, as in Aayah 157 of Sooratu Al A'raaf: "Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet(7:157)." The Prophet, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, said: "ennaa ummatun ummeyyatun laa nahsebu wa laa naktubu." The Hadeeth means: "We are an unlettered people, we can not compute and can not write." Shaahedan, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Seventeen) Shaahedan: "A Witness, as in Aayah 45 of Sooratu Al Ahzaab: "O Prophet! Truly We have sent you as a Witness, a Bearer of glad tidings, and a Warner(33:45)." Al Qastalaanee said: "Muslim reported that on the Day of Judgement past nations deny that the Prophets sent to them did not deliver the Message. Then Allaah, and He knows best, ask the Prophets for proofs that they have delivered the message to their peoples. The Prophets call the nation of Prophet Muhammad, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, as witnesses that they have delivered the message of Allaah to their nations. The nation of

Prophet Muhammad, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, will testify that the Prophets have delivered the message to their nations. These nation will then say: "how do you know and you came after us and did not live with us?" They will say: "Allaah Most High told as about that in His book revealed unto His Truthful Prophet", which is the Quraan. Then Allaah will call Muhammad, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, and asks him about his nation and whether their witness can be accepted, and he says that his nation is a just nation whose witnessing can be accepted." That is how he, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, is Shaahedan a witness. Mubash-sheran, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Eighteen) Mubash-sheran: "A bearer of glad tidings, as in Aayah 45 of Sooratu Al Ahzaab: "O Prophet! Truly We have sent you as a Witness, a Bearer of glad tidings, and a Warner(33:45)." Natheeran, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (nineteen) Natheeran: "A Warner as in Aayah 45 of Sooratu Al Ahzaab: "O Prophet! Truly We have sent you as a Witness, a Bearer of glad tidings, and a Warner(33:45)." Daa'eyan Elaa Allaahe Be Ethnehe, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Twenty) Daa'eyan Elaa Allaahe Be Ethnehe: "The one who invites to Allaah's (grace) by His leave,, as in Aayah 46 of Sooratu Al Ahzaab: "And as one who invites to Allaah's (grace) by His leave, and as a Lamp spreading light(33:46)." Seraajan Muneeran, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Twenty one) Seraajan Muneeran: "A Lamp spreading light, as in Aayah 46 of Sooratu Al Ahzaab: "And as one who invites to Allaah's (grace) by His leave, and as a Lamp spreading light(33:46)." For his affair is as clear as a lamp that is spreading light, and his Prophet hood is also as clear as a lamp that is spreading light, and it lights the hearts of the Muslims. Therefore he, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam is light spreading light. Ra'oofan Raheeman, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (twenty two) Ra'oofan Raheeman: "Most kind and merciful, as in Aayah 9 of Sooratu Tawbah: "Now has come unto you a Messenger from amongst yourselves: it grieves him that you should suffer, ardently anxious is he over you: to the believers is he most kind and merciful(9:128)."

Muthakkeran, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Twenty three) Muthakkeran: "The Reminder, as in Aayah 21 of Sooratu Al Ghaashiyah: "Therefore do you remind for you are one to remind(88:21)." Rahmatan, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Twenty four) Rahmatan: "A Mercy, as in Aayah 107 of Sooratu Al Anbeyaa: "We sent you not, but as a mercy for all creatures(21:107), and in the Hadeeth of Aboo Hurayrah: "ennamaa anaa rahmatun" which means: "and I am but Mercy." Ne'matan, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Twenty five) Ne'matan: "Ne'mah is favors and bounties. Al Imaamu Sahl ben 'Abdu Allaahe Al Tusturee said: "The word of Allaah Ta'aalaa in Sooratu Al Nahle: "If you would count up the favors of Allaah, never would you be able to number them, for Allaah is oft forgiving, Most Merciful(16:18)." He said: "the favors of Allaah is Muhammad, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, and he is the greatest of His favors by being a mercy for the worlds." Haadeyan, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Twenty six) Haadeyan: "The one who guides to the right way, as Allaah Most High said in Aayah 52 of Sooratu Al Shuraa: "And verily you do guide (men) to the Straight Way(42:52)." Al Imamu Ibnu Al 'Arabee Al Maalekee, says in his Book "Ahkaamu Al Quraane" that some of the Soofees say that: "Allaah, 'Azza wa Jalla, has One Thousand Names, and the Prophet, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, has also One thousand Names." Ibnu Al 'Arabee says: "this number is too small for the Names of Allaah. Of the names of the Prophet, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, I have memorized 64 names", and he named them and explained their meaning. Then he said: "and beyond these, he has other names as well." Al Qastalaanee says: "Al Qaadee 'Eyaad said: "Allaah Most High gave to his Prophet Muhammad, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, and called him by about thirty of His Most Beautiful Names." He further said: "ibnu Dehyah said in his book "Al Mustawfaa": "if his names in the Quraan and in the Hadeeth and in the previous books are counted they are over three hundred." Among the large number of names that Al Qastalaanee listed are: Mahmood, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam (Twenty seven) Mahmood: "The One Praised! This name is one of Allaah's Names, for every one praises Him. This was the name of the Prophet

Muhammad, Sallaa Allaahu 'Alayhe Wasallam, in the Zaboor, the Book of David." The Hadeeths and the meaning of the names are from the book "Sharhu al 'allaamah Al Zzarqaanee 'alaa Al Mawaahebe Al Laduneyyah be Al Menahe Al Muhamadeyyah by Al Imaamu Al Qasdhalaanee, may Allaah have mercy on both of them. In this book you will find a lot of more names organized according to the Arabic alphabet. And we say al hamdu le Allaahe Rabbe al 'aalameena wa Sallaa Allaahu 'Alaa Sayyedenaa wa Mawlaanaa wa Shafee'anaa Muhammaden wa 'Alaa Aalehe wa Sahbehe Wasallam tasleeman katheeran.
