1 CORINTHIANS 11:2 Now I praise you because you remember me in everything, and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you.
REASON # 1 HEADSHIP 1. God 2. Christ 3. Man 4. Woman But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. 1 Corinthians 11:3
Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying, disgraces his head. But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying, disgraces her head; for she is one and the same with her whose head is shaved. For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head. (1 Corinthians 11:4-6)
1 CORINTHIANS 11:7 For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.
1 CORINTHIANS 11:8-9 For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man; for indeed man was not created for the woman's sake, but woman for the man's sake.
1 CORINTHIANS 11:10 Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.
1 CORINTHIANS 11:11-12 However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God.
1 CORINTHIANS 11:13 Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with head uncovered?
1 CORINTHIANS 11:14-15 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering.
NATURE (φύσις) the naturally regulated order of things inherited or habituated characteristics natural to man natural endowment, native condition inherited from one's ancestors
REASON #2 GLORY 1. The glory of God is man 2. The glory of man is woman 3. The glory of woman is her long hair 1 Corinthians 11:7,15
WHY DO MEN AND WOMEN DO THE OPPOSITE? It would seem that since both men and women should express their submission to God s order of headship, both would be covered.
The manifestation of God s purpose in creation (glory), takes precedence over the expression of submission (headship), making it improper for a man to cover his head.
1 CORINTHIANS 11:16 But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God.
IS IT A CULTURAL PRACTICE? Greet one another with a holy kiss (Romans 16:16). If I then, the Lord and Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another s feet (John 13:14).
IF IT IS CULTURAL, WHOSE CULTURE IS IT?

WAS IT A MATTER OF PUBLIC DECENCY? "For a woman to appear in public bareheaded was to act in what we would call a 'bare-faced' manner. It was the mark of a woman of loose morals. It outraged the proprieties. Leon Morris The First Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians
WAS IT A MATTER OF PUBLIC DECENCY? the text does not mention public decency if a matter of decency, then why only while praying and prophesying? veiling was not customary in public the shorn woman of verse 5 is an analogy the 1,000 temple prostitutes never existed
CORINTH Ancient Greek City, apex 600 BC Destroyed by Romans, 146 BC Rebuilt by Julius Caesar, 44 BC Roman Colony of 700,000, first century
WAS IT A MATTER OF PUBLIC DECENCY? Strabo's tale of a thousand temple prostitutes has been shown to be completely false. He was speaking of the pre-146 BC city and simply misunderstood his sources. Jerome Murphy-O'Connor The Corinth that Saint Paul Saw, Biblical Archaeologist, September 1984
SHOULD A MAN EVER COVER HIS HEAD WHEN PRAYING OR PROPHESYING? SHOULD A WOMAN EVER UNCOVER HERS?
