THE SOUTH CAROLINA CHRISTIAN A Publication of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in South Carolina P O Box 80536, Charleston, South Carolina 29416-2064 1293 Orange Grove Road, Charleston, South Carolina 29407-3947 T: 843-852-4537 FAX: 843-852-4538 Website: scdisciples.org E-mail: roccsc@aol.com Volume 92 Number 3 May-June 2014 Greetings SC Regional Church family! I am pleased to welcome our newest pastor among us in the person of Pastor Shaunette Lloyd. She was called and presented as the new pastor of Zion Pilgrim Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Ridgeville on Sunday June 22 nd. Her installation service is scheduled for Sunday August 10 th. Look for more details to come. Did you know that our Region has pastors enrolled in a Disciples seminary? Pastor Deveta Smith Brown, Pastor Ed Cushingberry and myself. I encourage continuing education and applaud the accomplishments of several of our clergy. I ask clergy who have recently completed further studies in the past three years to send a copy of your certificate of graduation to the Regional Church Office so we may acknowledge it appropriately. Also, please let us know if you are currently enrolled in a continuing education program. We are praying God s wisdom for you and thank you! The Regional Church Constitution and By Laws are being revised and will be presented formally at our Regional Board meeting on Saturday, August 9 th at First Christian Church, Aiken. I encourage our congregational representation at this meeting. The Regional Board will present it for approval during our Regional Conference in October. I am led to launch a series on prayer. I will share some initial insights with you here. Prayer is an essential key in the success of the believer in Jesus Christ. It is so important that the Bible says that Christ is now at the right hand of God, Our heavenly Father, making intercession for us. Why? It is because we, believers, are not a finished work of salvation yet. Our human spirit has been reborn. Our minds are being renewed as we study and grow in the knowledge and wisdom of God in Word and Spirit. Our bodies have yet to be changed. Besides this we have an assignment from the Lord while we are still here. It s called the Great Commandment found in Matthew 28:19-20! Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. NIV

It is of utmost importance to learn and to know how to pray. Prayer in its simplest definition is communicating with God. When I say this one must realize that just like communicating with people, communicating with God may take different forms. In other words, like there are different types of communication such as questions, answers, commands, directions, appreciation and thanksgiving and so on, likewise there are different types of prayer. All prayer is not the same in function. Here as brief list of a few categories of prayer. Prayer Categories I) Prayers that change things 1) Agreement Matthew 18:19, 20 2) Faith Mark 11:24/ James 5:14, 15 3) Petition Philippians 4:6-7 4) Binding and Loosing (Forbid and to Allow) Matthew 18:18 5) Intercession 1 Timothy 2:1-4 6) United Prayer Acts 4:23, 24, 31 II) Prayers of Thanksgiving and Praise Psalm 100:4 III) Dedication and Consecration (Commitment) Matthew 26:36, 39 IV) Casting Your Cares Upon the Lord I Peter 5:7 Is 54:13 Let s study these Scriptures and seek greater understanding as we develop our prayer life! Peace, Pastor Long

Regional Personality Profiles Chaplain Sam Boone (US Army Retired) was born and raised in Bennettsville, South Carolina. I was ordained a Minister in the Christian Church (Disciples) at Woodmont Christian Church, Nashville, Tennessee in 1983 after graduating from Vanderbilt School of Divinity in Nashville. I was raised in the United Methodist Church and while serving a Methodist Church in Nashville, I met the late Dr. Herman Norton, who was instrumental in mentoring me as I struggled with my theology of witness. I returned to the Church of my late Father (C.O. Boone) who was raised in Hall s Gap Christian Church in Kentucky. I served 38 plus years in the US Army as an enlisted Radio Operator, Helicopter Pilot and the last 24 as a Chaplain. I now have the wonderful opportunity to train new chaplains (at the Army s Armed Forces Chaplaincy Center Fort Jackson, SC) who care for America s most precious asset, her sons and daughters. This is so fulfilling in the Stone-Campbell tradition of ecumenical outreach Christian Unity as our Polar Star. I also volunteer at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery to insure no Veteran is laid to rest without the office of a chaplain. I live in Elgin, SC with my beloved wife, Teresa, we will celebrate 39 years of Marriage on the 26 th of July. Reverend Shaunette L. Lloyd Rev. Lloyd began her life as a Christian at an early age at New Galilee Christian Church, DOC, Holly Hill, SC under the leadership of the late Rev. Leon Simmons. She was called to ministry, nurtured, guided, and ordained under the leadership of Pastor Charlie G. Goodman. While under this leadership Rev. Lloyd served in various capacities within the ministry, such as, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Minister, etc. She also served as Education Chair of the District II Union and Secretary of SC State Disciples Women s Ministry. Rev. Lloyd currently holds the position of secretary of Eastern Orangeburg Area Ministerial Alliance. Rev. Lloyd is the elected pastor after serving five months as interim pastor to a 128-year-old congregation. She is elated to have been called as the first female pastorof Zion Pilgrim Christian Church, DOC and is excited about the move of God in her life!! She is a humble servant of God with a heart s desire to please God in every facet of life. Rev. Lloyd is encouraged by her favorite scripture: Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Rev. Lloyd attended the public schools in Orangeburg County School District III during most of her childhood. She earned a BA degree in Sociology, Morris College, Sumter, SC and a MA degree in Clinical Counseling, Webster University. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Rev. Lloyd has been employed with the Department of Mental Health for thirteen years. She currently serves as Clinic Director of Holly Hill Mental Health Clinic, Holly Hill, SC.

The 2014 Quadrennial Assembly (QA) was recently held June25-29 in Atlanta GA. It was presented by the International Disciples Women Ministries (IDWM) of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. This event brought together sisters from across the globe for spiritual renewal, relaxation, and empowerment through the preaching, workshops, and opportunities for Mission. Special events consisted of the Walk Against Human Trafficking, the QA marking the 50 th year anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 There was also a pilgrimage to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, the place of his birth home, the Center for Non Violent Social Change and to the Ebenezer Baptist Church. A program entitled I see you Free! was held for all QA attendees on Saturday June 28 th at the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ. Another highlight of the QA was the Disciples Women Ministries introduction of the new Program Director Chesla T. Nickelson! The Quadrennial Assembly provided programs for Children through the Completions of 4th grade, Tweens 5-7 TH grade, Youth 8-12 th grade. I liked a lot of freebees from the exhibitors! This year for the first time Disciples Men coordinated a special program planned just for men. Each attendee of the Quadrennial Assembly received a charm in the design of the conference logo and a tote bag made of oilcloth by Women from Puerto Palomas, a little town in Chihuahua, Mexico. Outdoor worship centers offer privacy and intimacy with nature. Hiking trails of varying difficulty wind through the more than 400 acres of forest surrounding the conference center. Christmount is a perfect place to retreat. What will I do? We all would like to have the experience of spending time alone with God, but some of us are intimidated by the idea. Rev. Jamie Brame, Christmount s Church Relations Director, will be glad to assist you in planning and designing your time apart. Please contact Jamie at least 2 weeks prior to your arrival.
