Section for the Literary Arts and Humanities Study Conference on the work of Rudolf Steiner Christianity as Mystical Fact With, Christiane Haid and Roland Halfen 13 15 November 2015
Study Conference on the work of Rudolf Steiner Christianity as Mystical Fact When Rudolf Steiner published the first edition of his book Christianity as Mystical Fact in 1902, he laid the foundation for a new Christology that revealed for the first time how Christianity was not only prepared by the Old Testament and Judaism but to an equal extent by paganism and its mysteries: The creative power at work in Christianity has prepared the ground for its appearance in the pre-christian mysteries. The book itself was adapted from a series of lectures Rudolf Steiner gave in Berlin in 1901/1902. The second, thoroughly revised and extended, edition of 1910 also reflects the development of Rudolf Steiner s research into this topic. At a time that was informed by biblical criticism he audaciously presented an approach to Christianity through the mysteries. The Gospels, having become questionable as historical sources of Christianity, appear in a wholly new light if studied in relation with mythology and the mysteries and can be read as documents of mystical initiation experiences. This new Christology has far-reaching consequences which have, however, largely remained unexplored. This study conference will serve to introduce us to, and deepen our understanding of, this seminal Christological work by presenting it in its historical context and by looking at the transition from the first to the second edition, with particular consideration of its reflection of Rudolf Steiner s own inner development. In addition, we will work on central aspects in the relationship between the mysteries and Christianity.
