From the East From the East, As February settles upon us at Harmonia Lodge, we are already off to a great start. The reason we are smoothly easing into the new year is careful planning, communication and training of key positions. Harmonia also embraces the team concept. Developing a team is not just for lodge officers, teams are very effective for accomplishing a variety of tasks. While the lodge does observe a great amount of ritual and floor work involving many moving parts and thus teams, other areas of the lodge such as committees, work groups and even the kitchen crew are essentially teams as well. Leadership It is understood that leaders are responsible for the people who serve with them but it is also the responsibility of the leader to create the environment conducive to learning and development of the brethren. After all, enlightenment and service are key reasons most of us are here at all. Opportunity One way to create this environment is to make available plenty of opportunities for the individual to fit in and grow. Few things are better motivators than the invitation for an individual to join a group of people with similar interests. In the lodge there always seems to be more work available than people to do it. By forming a team or committee and inviting those that tend to wait for invitations rather than wait to see who volunteers, we are fulfilling our roles as leaders. Understanding The challenge is often knowing where to begin in the training process. The answer is not as complicated as it seems when you know your people. If you don t know them well or you don t participate in the activity yourself, the answer will likely elude you. Since we are all brothers and active in the lodge, the training process will almost take care of itself. As long as you plan, communicate and participate yourself, others will follow. Training Leadership is a treadmill of sorts. I ve always said this and I ll say it again because it helps us to remember that each year the officers change. We must make every effort to properly train and educate others to take our position at the tip of the spear. Failure to do so will have detrimental effects in lodge operations, participation and ultimately membership. Part of our system of attracting and retention of members is to get their attention when they first walk in the door and keep them engaged or at least provide them the opportunity to engage. Leadership is all about managing large problems by breaking them down into manageable pieces. Teamwork is the muscle that moves all the pieces into the right places to achieve desired results. Teams work best when they are coached and people understand their roles when they are mentored by those who have gone before them. Find your role, play your role and the whole team will come together. Do you know your role? See you in lodge! Fraternally, Charley Hogwood Worshipful Master From the West From the West, It's hard to believe that it's already February. As we enter into a new year, this February gives us the time to pause and take stock. The holiday season is over but we can still look back at what we've accomplished as we look ahead to our future. First, the installation held on January 11th was recognized as a premier night for Harmonia. Thank you to the brothers and their families who attended and helped the installation to turn out great. There was a variety of good food and lots of fellowship. I want to express my undying gratitude to all the brothers who assisted me in the kitchen. You have all gone above and beyond to make cooking an easy and enjoyable experience. I could not have done it without all of you, my incredible brothers. I am grateful and eternally indebted to you. Secondly, I would like to congratulate our newly installed Worshipful Master, Charley Hogwood, and all the elected and appointed officers. I have confidence that we will continue our journey to make our lodge great. Thirdly, on February 5th we will be having a family bingo night. Please come and join us for a chance to win fabulous prizes. On February 18th a Fellow Craft degree will be held. Dinner will begin at 6:30pm with the degree to follow at 7:30pm. Come and support our brothers as they receive their 2nd degree. Fourthly, each of us experience life in different ways. On the outside of our daily lives, we arm ourselves in order to protect our eternal life, our intimacy, our loved ones, and our personal beliefs. We have one face that we share with the world. We must be watchful that nothing penetrates the sanctity of our internal peace. From the inside we all have windows to the world, but only open them to those we trust in eternity. We live peacefully, encompassed by the healing rose, symbolizing compassion and love. With that I wish a Happy Valentine's Day to all. To all brothers out there, please continue to keep in touch. We welcome and appreciate your input. We look forward to seeing you in lodge. Ricky Espiritu Senior Warden
From the South From the South, After the first two stated communications of the new year, it is apparent things are going well at Harmonia. Much has been done regarding the condition of our building, but there is still more work remaining. The windows have been glazed and sealed, and the painting of the building exterior should be completed within the next week. A huge special thanks to the 2016 Kitchen Crew who did an awesome job with the Installation Dinner and the meetings in January!!! A special thanks to all the guys for the many hours given and for the dedication you have shown already. Everyone has commented on how amazing the kitchen has been operating, and there is no way that it could have been done without you! I cannot thank you enough! We hope to see you on Friday, 2/5/16 at 6:30pm for our annual Pizza and Bingo Family Night. Also, please make plans to attend our upcoming Fellow Craft degree on Thursday, 2/18/16. See you in Lodge!
