Today is the Second Sunday of Easter. During Eastertide, our first reading (which usually comes from the Old Testament) will come instead from Acts of the Apostles. Acts was written by Luke and begins with the end of his gospel. He traces for us the early church and gives us great insight into how the first Christians came to grips with Jesus death and resurrection..today Luke describes what we might call the honeymoon period for the early Christians. He expresses genuine excitement at the joy, the oneness, the caring, etc. that marks this early church. Don t worry, it won t last!...our second reading is from the first letter of John in which he tells us that faith consists in accepting Jesus for who he is the divine Son of God. And our faith in him is expressed in our willingness to keep his commandments. John reminds us that his commands are not burdensome..our gospel also comes today from John and recounts the story of Jesus appearing to the apostles while Thomas is absent. This is a wonderful gospel story for it reflects how we often feel about these things, ie., can they possibly all be true? How do I know that without any proof? When Thomas finally sees, he is overwhelmed and responds with a powerful assent of faith. The most powerful line in today s gospel is Jesus saying, Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed. Celebrant of the 5 PM Mass next Saturday will be Father Jason Glover of Gannon University and celebrant of both Sunday Masses will be Monsignor John Hagerty, retired headmaster of Cathedral Prep. I will be in Europe...Work is progressing on the Irish Festival scheduled for September 14, 15 & 16. St. Patrick parishioner Dennis Michalski is chairing the committee for the festival program. While that program has in the past listed businesses in the Erie area who do advertising, we are hoping to expand the program this year. If you look at other festival programs, they always include memorials for people. These memorials can also include a photograph. Perhaps remembering a family and doing it with a photograph. In other instances, people use a photograph of a deceased relative and put an ad In memory of We re hoping that people might be interested in doing this. You can have a listing of 1/4 page for $125 or a half page for $175. If anyone is interested, contact the rectory office (454-8085) and we ll work out the details with you...our Irish Festival is also fortunate to have received a $2,000 grant from the Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority to help us with the start-up costs of the festival. These are monies generated at the casino with over $150,000 being distributed to festivals, parades, etc. in Erie County...The comments of people on the mock-up in St. Patrick s Church have been overwhelmingly positive. It strikes me as a simple but very elegant highlighting of the area, and when this is done in the entire building, it s going to be overwhelming. The committee is still trying to decide exactly what to do with the dome. The Conrad Schmitt Studio is encouraging a bit of a deeper green or perhaps even blue, but the committee is not sure that is the direction we want to go. The Conrad Schmitt Studio continues working closely with us as well as the lighting consultant, the scaffolding company, etc.... Restoration Committee member Chip Wachter and I went through the Cauley Auditorium with an Erie Insurance representative just recently, and we both think it will work fine as a temporary place for us to have Mass while the church is closed. Erie Insurance had to remove all of the tile in the building because it contained so much asbestos, and we will be on a concrete floor. We have some cleaning up to do, but that shouldn t be a problem. If we can raise 50% of the costs in cash by the middle of August, we will go ahead and move into the Cauley and get started on the project so we can be done by Christmas. I m grateful to Erie Insurance for their generosity in allowing us to use the building while we re doing this work...the Conrad Schmitt Studio has prepared a 3 x 4 poster which will show you what we are proposing for the interior of the church. You ll find one in the vestibule and a second one is located near the mock-up so that you can see. The Restoration Committee continues to meet and assess everything as we go along. We ve been given a time table by the Conrad Schmitt people which will have us moving into the Cauley in early August and returning to the church for the first time on Christmas Eve...If you are not a registered St. Patrick parishioner, the brochure for the capital campaign can be found in the back of church. Please take one and consider helping with this project..while the church is closed, you will be able to go to our web page and see a weekly update of either video or photos of the work that is underway. There is already some material on that page which shows you the restored pew as well as what the mockup looks like. You can access that information by going to www.saintpatrickparisherie.org...during the month of February the St. Patrick Food Pantry distributed 24,461 pounds of food to a total of 675 families...hundreds of Gannon University students will again participate in a Day of Caring April 21 when they go to countless places in the community to help with environmental or green projects. We are fortunate to have 10 students coming to St. Patrick s to help spruce up the grounds..we are in need of some volunteers from St. Hedwig s for the parish picnic. Contact the office.....and did you know that if a statue in the park of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle. If the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died because of wounds received in battle. If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes..found in a church bulletin At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be What is Hell? Come early and listen to our choir practice. Also Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones. And you think my bulletins are bad!!...two St. Patrick s parishioners brought their two young grandsons to Mass on Easter and at brunch asked them what they had learned. The 4 year old replied, That Jesus was dead for 175 years and now they re going to paint the church.

Saint Patrick News Parish Stewardship: Our offertory for the weekend of March 31/April 1 was $7,074.50, and $2,800 for Easter Flowers. For April 7/8 $9,466.00. Thank you for your generosity. We continue to thank those who make special donations to our parish and we pray for those people in whose honor the donations were made: The Restoration/Foundation Fund in memory of Lucille Bender from Joan and Jim Ragen; The Peace Candle burns this week for all the men and women serving in the military; The Food Pantry Truck is sponsored this week by Kathy Alessi in memory of deceased family members; The Food Pantry in memory of Helen Farmer by Janice Vaco and Steve Smith, and Mary Williams. A Moment of Reflection Reading I: Acts 4:32-35 Reading II: 1 5:1-6John Gospel: John 20:19-31 In Acts today, we hear how the believers shared their food and personal property with the apostles so that the needs of everyone could be met. This is an early Christian witness to what we have come to call the corporal works of mercy. As Christians, we are called to live our lives by demonstrating that same mercy in today s world. Who has been a witness of God s mercy to you?
