Week 1 key words Creation Allegory Values Identity Origins Key vocabulary The act of bringing something into existence. A story or poem that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning. Principles, standards, and beliefs that are held in high regard. The characteristics that define who or what a person or thing is. The point at which something begins.

Week 2 key words Chronology Symbolism Context Traditions Arranging events in order according to when they happened. The use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. The circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea. Customs and beliefs that are passed on from one generation to the next.

Week 3 - The Seven Pomegranate Seeds Ancient Greece this story is a fable that explains the origin of changing seasons. The Seven Pomegranate Seeds Demeter goddess of agriculture and marriage Core/Persephone Demeter s daughter Hades god of the underworld Zeus king of the gods Core is kidnapped by Hades and taken to the underworld. Demeter wants her to come back to Olympus. They compromise and Core spends half her time in the underworld and half on Olympus. When Core is on Olympus, Demeter is happy and it is summer. When she is in the underworld, Demeter is sad and it is winter.

Week 4 - Pandora s Box Ancient Greece this story is a fable that explains why there are bad things in the world. Pandora s Box Prometheus a titan who taught humans to use fire Hephaestus god of blacksmithing and crafting things King Epimetheus a titan, Prometheus s brother Pandora a very beautiful but foolish woman, married to Epimetheus Zeus and Prometheus are enemies because of a war between the titans and the gods. Prometheus s brother Epimetheus has a box that contains all of the bad things in the world. Zeus creates a very beautiful but very vain and foolish woman named Pandora, who marries Epimetheus. Although he tells her not to, Pandora s curiosity leads her to open the box releasing all of the harmful things into the world.

Week 5 - Genesis Abrahamic this story appears in similar versions in Abrahamic religions. Genesis is the Christian version and tells how God created the earth. Genesis Adam the first man Eve the first woman Serpent represents the devil, who wants mankind to suffer God the allpowerful deity that created the universe God created the world in seven days, adding new and different things each day for six days and resting on the seventh. The first humans, Adam and Eve, lived in a beautiful garden called Eden until the serpent tempts Eve with the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, and God banishes them from Eden.

Week 6 The Lion s Share and Spider s Web The Lion s Share Somali this story teaches children the value of fairness. The lion the largest, strongest animal and King of the Beasts Other animals the creatures the lion rules over Together, all the animals kill a camel for food. They argue over how to divide the meat among them, and the lion uses his strength to frighten the others into giving him an unfairly large portion. African this story teaches children not to be deceitful. Spider s Web Spider a trickster character Other animals the Spider s friends All the animals go up to the sky to find wives. Spider steals some food and frames Rabbit for the crime, leading all the animals to be banished from the sky.

Week 7 The Ox, The Donkey, and the Farmer A Thousand and One Arabian Nights one of a collection of stories that form a larger story about a woman who told her husband the King a new story each night. The Ox, The Donkey, and the Farmer The ox an unintelligent but well-meaning animal The donkey a clever but lazy animal The farmer a human who runs the farm and owns both the ox and the donkey The ox worked hard on the farm but the donkey did not. The donkey advised the ox to pretend he was injured to get out of work. The ox did so, and the donkey had to do the work instead. The donkey then tries to trick the ox into going back to work, but the farmer overhears them. The farmer then makes both the ox and the donkey share the hard work of the farm.
