APRIL 3, 2015 SERVICE OF TENEBRAE 7:00 P.M. GATHERING VOLUNTARY O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde gross (O Man, Bewail Thy Great Sin) J.S. Bach INTROIT Gustav Holst Psalm 86 To my humble supplication, Lord, give ear and acceptation; Save Thy servant, that hath none Help nor hope but Thee alone. Send, O send relieving gladness to my soul opprest with sadness, Which, from clog of earth set free, winged with zeal, flies up to Thee. Bow down thine ear O Lord, hear me; for I am poor and needy Preserve my soul for I am holy O Thou my God, save Thy servant that trusteth in Thee. Save Thy servant that hath none help nor hope but Thee alone. Be merciful unto me O Lord; for I cry unto Thee daily. Rejoice the soul of Thy servant for unto Thee O Lord do I lift up my soul. For Thou Lord art good and ready to forgive and plenteous in mercy unto them that call upon Thee. Give ear O Lord unto my prayer and attend to the voice of my supplication. I will praise Thee O Lord my God with all my heart and I will glorify Thy name for evermore. To Thee, rich in mercies treasure, and in goodness without measure, never failing help to those who on Thy sure help repose. Heavenly Tutor, of thy kindness, teach my dullness, guide my blindness, that my steps Thy paths may tread which to endless bliss do lead. CALL TO WORSHIP Todd Jones Leader: God is light, in whom there is no darkness at all. People: Jesus Christ is the light of the world. Leader: And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, People: and we loved darkness rather than light.

*HYMN 220 Go to Dark Gethsemane (Stanzas 1-3) REDHEAD WELCOME AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR DISCIPLESHIP Todd Jones PRAYER FOR GOOD FRIDAY Almighty God, graciously behold this Your family, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed into the hands of sinners and to suffer death upon the cross; Who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE PASSION OF JESUS CHRIST LESSON I John 18:1-11 Kyrie (from Requiem, Op. 9) Maurice Duruflé Kyrie eleison Christe eleison Kyrie eleison Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. LESSON II John 18:12-14 Ave Verum W.A. Mozart Ave, verum corpus natum de Maria Virgine, vere passum immolatum in cruce pro homine. Cujus latus perforatum unda fluxit et sanguine. Esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. Hail, true body born of the Virgin Mary, Who truly suffered, and sacrificed on the Cross for all, Whose pierced side overflowed with water and blood, Be for us a foretaste in the agony of death. LESSON III John 18:15-18 *HYMN 218 (seated) Ah, Holy Jesus (Stanzas 1 & 2 only) HERZLIEBSTER JESU

LESSON IV John 18:19-24 Who Was It Thus Did Smite Thee? (from St. John Passion) J.S. Bach Who was it thus did smite Thee, my Lord and who requite Thee, with fierce and cruel blow? For Thou wert no offender as we to sin surrender, no evil didst Thou ever know. Tis I by guilt encumbered, my sins, like sands unnumbered, that lie upon the shore; These sins it was that brought Thee Thy misery, and wrought Thee of martyrdom the awful store. LESSON V John 18:25-27 LESSON VI John 18:28-32 Carol of the Hill Stephen Paulus On my ground with a crown of thorn, He died for us Who for us was born. The tree that flowered is cold and bare; no songs, no singing anywhere; O Bethlehem, Ah Jerusalem. Second Adam, Son of Man, into my earth Your life s blood ran. Now from this earth new trees will grow with fruits, with flowers I swear it so; O Bethlehem, Ah Jerusalem. For You I shall wear a crown of trees, and birds will sing from among their leaves; for You I shall wear a crown of trees, and birds will sing from among their leaves; for You I shall wear a crown of trees; now sing, birds, sing, from among your leaves; O Jerusalem, new lives, new leaves, born again, O Jerusalem. LESSON VII John 18:33-38a

HYMN Lord, Why Have You Forsaken Me? Psalm 22 BOURBON LESSON VIII John 18:38b-40 LESSON IX John 19:1-11 Agnus Dei (from Requiem, Op. 9) Maurice Duruflé Agnus, Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi dona eis requiem sempiternam. Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world. Grant them eternal rest. LESSON X John 19:12-16 HYMN 221 O Sacred Head, Now Wounded PASSION CHORALE LESSON XI John 19:17-22 Drop, Drop Slow Tears Orlando Gibbons arr. Ernest Bullock Drop, drop, slow tears, and bathe those beauteous feet, which brought from heaven the news and Prince of Peace. Cease not, wet eyes, His mercies to entreat; to cry for vengeance sin doth never cease. In your deep floods drown all my faults and fears, nor let His eye see sin, but through my tears. LESSON XII John 19:23-24

HYMN 223 When I Survey the Wondrous Cross HAMBURG LESSON XIII John 19:25-27 Cross of Jesus, Cross of Sorrow John Stainer Cross of Jesus, cross of sorrow, where the blood of Christ was shed, perfect Man on thee did suffer, perfect God on thee has bled! Here the King of all the ages, throned in light ere worlds could be, robed in mortal flesh is dying, crucified by sin for me. O mysterious condescending! O abandonment sublime! Very God Himself is bearing all the sufferings of time! Cross of Jesus, cross of sorrow, where the blood of Christ was shed, perfect Man on thee did suffer, perfect God on thee has bled! LESSON XIV John 19:28-30 Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed Gilbert M. Martin Alas! and did my Savior bleed, and did my Sovreign die? Would He devote that sacred head for sinners such as I? Was it for crimes that I have done, He groaned upon the tree? Amazing pity! Grace unknown! And love beyond degree! Well might the sun in darkness hide, and shut its glories in, when God, the mighty maker, died for His own creature s sin. Thus might I hide my blushing face while His dear cross appears; dissolve my heart in thankfulness, and melt mine eyes to tears. Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see! But drops of tears can ne er repay the debt of love I owe. Here, Lord, I give myself away; tis all that I can do. Alas! and did my Savior bleed, and did my Sovreign die? Would He devote that sacred head for sinners such as I? Amen, Amen, Amen! LESSON XV John 19:31-37

PRAYER FOR MERCY Todd Jones Merciful God, You gave Your Son to suffer the shame of the cross. Save us from hardness of heart, that, seeing Him who died for us, we may repent, confess our sin, and receive Your overflowing love, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Pastor: Lord have mercy. People: Lord have mercy. Pastor: Christ have mercy. People: Christ have mercy. Pastor: Lord have mercy. People: Lord have mercy. Nearer, My God, to Thee BETHANY Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! E en though it be a cross that raiseth me; Still all my song shall be, Nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! LESSON XVI John 19:38-42 Please depart in silence.
