It was not easy back then to proudly and openly name it as Hindu Society and proclaim the mandir as Hindu Bhavan. We salute these visionaries who forged a union of people who came from different regions and cultures. Our task now is to maintain, nurture and to grow this fabulous institution. In this context let me share with you some news which will surely bring you happiness. First, the most fabulous news which is long awaited after performing bhoomi puja, work was initiated to build turning lanes on aviation parkway in front of the temple. The construction committee worked hard to make this possible. Weather permitting this should get completed in the next few months. The addition of turning lanes will add greatly to safety and convenience of devotees. Please forgive any inconvenience this may cause while the construction is being completed. I wish to thank all the members who sent in their vote on the membership fee proposal. The response was unprecedented and overwhelming. Though the by-laws state that the dues cannot be changed without a membership vote, this was the only time in memory that members were given an opportunity to vote on a change in membership fees. For security reasons the secretary of HSNC had generated a unique code which was printed on each vote envelope to be matched with your name. For further safety and to comply with the by-laws, we had the members write their names on the ballot. All three things were cross checked before the ballot count. This was clearly the safest ballot count in the history of this institution. The members spoke 606 for, 357 against, a difference of 249 votes. A team is working on implementing all aspects of this proposal properly and methodically. Prasad Satghare ji and Viral Chokshi ji have worked very hard to explore ways to renew our temple interior so it will feel more like a traditional Hindu temple. We spoke with many experts iand even made trip to other temples to get ideas. An artist from Bengaluru was brought in and models were created to install gold coated copper carved chhatras on each deity. We spoke with engineers and construction experts about feasibility. We also had extensive conversations with Mr. Sunny Surana ji about upgrading the deity platforms with granite tops. Finally the discussions are in the final phase to have a do sthapana of Shri Jagannath and Subhadra Mata in our temple. There are many other exciting things happening Ganesh Chaturthi was celebrated by thousands who visited the temple. Navratri is around the corner and this year we will hold the Garba weekend downtown at the Raleigh Convention Center. A career day will be held on Saturday October 17 in the afternoon in which different professionals from our community will represented and we will invite kids from all communities to ask questions and explore career choices. It is a way to build positive bridges and to give back to the wider community. I wish I had more space on this page to write about the 20/20 summit and the work of the constitution committee. Perhaps next time. Finally the annual fundraising Gala will be on November 6 th. We decided to hold it earlier, during the traditional Hindu festival season. Other issues considered were the upcoming temple renovation and the construction project, both of which will need community support and donations. A special issue is being sent to you detailing these projects. Lastly I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of the volunteers who continue to give countless hours to humbly serve God and community. Sincerely, Neeraj Agrawal, MD HSNC, 309 Aviation Parkway, Morrisville, North Carolina, 27560, USA.., Ph: 919-481-2574 (Temple), 919-466-0414 (Cultural Hall), homepage: www.hsnconline.org, email: hsnc@hsnconline.org. Ganapati Bappa Moraya!! RTP Community s favorite Ganesh Festival was celebrated again in full fervor and enthusiasm in HSNC for ten days. It s our eighth year now since we started it with inspiration from Dr. Dhruv Kumar and the then board. We do Ganesh Sthapana from Ganesh Chaturthi to Anant Chaturdashi of Shalivahan Hindu Calendar along with very pleasant religious functions like Daily Pujas, Aratis and Abhishek, Annual Ganesh Yaag we also did a grand Maha-Abhishek with thousand times recitation of Atharvashirsh this year. We celebrate Ganesh Festival as a community festival to encourage various talents within community and bring all closer as a family. Last couple of years we have made local Nepali community as an integral part of Ganesh Festival with Hartalika teej celebrations. South Indian and other regional languages Bhakti Sangeet is yet another program which has become integral part of the festival. This year s Forteen Feet high illuminated Shree representing Shree Vishnu and Shree Lakshmi was attraction of the community. Dozens of volunteers build this wooden structure over two-three weeks working day and night to make strong platform structure. People appreciated the beauty of the Shree and décor. A grand procession by local band of Dhol and Tasha was a grand addition to processions this year. Educational : We did a fantastic debut for Explorer 2015 with great presentations on new sciences which are being evolved in recent times like Big Data, 3 D Printing, Genetic Medicine. Arts: We had great artists like Abhilasha Chellam, Pt Bapat and Kaushiki Chakrobarti perform this year and all the three programs were very well received. The high point of the festival was meet and greet event with Dr. Prakash and Mandatai Amte a real life hero of the modern world. RTP Ganesh Festival Chess Championship had enthusiastic participation from all over North Carolina people driving for three hours to join the championship. Over 100 students competed in the day long championship and fought for cash prizes. This year we did the first group Abhishek with 100 people reciting Atharvashirsh at the same time and doing a grand Maha Abhishek. It was followed by a sumptuous Peshavai Lunch for MahaPrasad. Devotees are still remembering the beautiful flute by Pandit Rajendra Bhat which completed the Puja that day. His fluent mantras added divine touch to the atmosphere. We will highly appreciate if you can continue your usual annual support to Ganesh festival as it proves your approval for what we are doing. If you would like to contribute towards Ganesh Festival, please write the check in name of HSNC and in Memo type Ganesh Fetsival. 2
Learning committee The new year for many learning classes offered by various affiliated organizations have begun with enrollment over 500 of our community children and youth. Hindi language, Bal Mukund, Sanskar Gurukul and Vaishnav Education just to name a few. Talks are on-going with a few more organizations and hope to accommodate more classes within limited space and time slots. With contract for the turning lanes on the Aviation Parkway for entrance to and exit from the HSNC has been signed in late Sept and with site work already begun, there is a lot of excitement among the learning community as this mark a significant milestone towards the Learning Center project. However, we would like to remind and request all parents to take extra time and caution around the construction zone/area as you come to drop off and pick up your students. Children safety is up most concern during this new year as construction is expected to last for several months (turning lanes followed by the learning center building). Girish Amin SevaNC Committee The committee met via conference call on Sept 29th. Thanks to Pragna Thacker for a successful IFFS Farm Day event on Sept. 12th (see picture attached). The committee plans to hold 6 events in 2016. Two events will focus on the Living Will, two will be for the entire family to participate in and two may have some age restrictions. With the popularity of the food bank and farm day events, they will be repeated next year. We are actively seeking interested committee members who are willing to take part in planning and execution of volunteer events. If interested please contact Manju Karkare at manjukarkare@gmail.com. Committee Reports Trustees Corner Construction. The contract for the turning lanes on the Aviation Parkway for entrance to and exit from the Society grounds was finalized and approved, and a Bhumi puja conducted to initiate the project. The management of the project has been entrusted to the able hands of Mr. Satpal Rathie, a long time member and Trustee of the Society. Ballots, Membership Dues. The concern over the recent ballots connected with new membership criteria, initiated by the Directors, continues and is still in the talks between the boards. Constitution. Work towards revising the constitution of the Society has been initiated. Many weaknesses exist in the current document that must be corrected. Few of the areas that have been mentioned and require discussion of and incorporation/revision in the constitution are as follows: Integration of the clauses of the Addendum (Article 4A) into the main constitution Protection of the liquid and capital assets from possible abuse Qualifications of a voting member Qualifications of officers: directors, elected trustees, donor trustees Creating congenial atmosphere at programs and meetings Minimization of the abuse of power and polarization within boards Review of the structure, membership and stability of the society s committees Dr. Bhupendra Gupta Membership Committee It was overwhelming to see the support for the membership reformatting and approval of the transformational changes we are bringing to the organization from the membership base. The process was very transparent and most safe voting process with secret number on envelops and names which were verified during vote counting in presence of four trustees and third party volunteers. HSNC secretary was completely satisfied to declare the results with full confidence and answering all the issues raised by handful of concerned members. We are now in process of implementation and with such a overwhelming mandate, our confidence has been boosted. Big THANK YOU to all who participated! This month we are also preparing for the elections for 2016 open positions and are announcing elections. HSNC Secretary is coordinating with Election Committee for the requirements. The Members Vote YES 606 NO 357 Yes have it by 249 TOTAL VOTE 963 More than 15% of members voted on the issue. A FORMAL REQUEST TO ALL HSNC MEMBERS, GUESTS & VISITORS We go to our beloved Temple to worship & pray to our GOD. However, we need to respect events & other fellow worshipper s rights /privilege to have the environment of peace & tranquility. The serene environment that HSNC Temple provides needs to be respected with dignity. For example: On last Monday, August 24, 2015, we were listening to Ramayan Katha narrated by distinguished Punditji visiting from India. The tranquility was shattered by Children screaming at the top of their lungs & running around without Parental Supervision. The audience was visibly distracted from listening to the Swamiji narration. Mrs. Saroj Sharma requested the visitors repeatedly to be silent. But it fell on deaf Ears. Swamiji was very gracious & did not get distracted from his narration. Mrs. Saroj Sharma requested me as member of the Senior Center to intervene & asked for assistance. Luckily, Tuesday, Aug 25, 2015, was a perfect environment with the visitors. However, we need to have some sense & sensibility to provide an peaceful environment for everyone to pray. My Father, Late Dr. P.K. Sanyal, taught me that Temple is a sanctuary for God. We need to respect the Holy place. For example, We (INDIANS) follow & respect Churches protocol with SILENCE & RESPECT. However, when we come to HSNC Temple, we forget all the respect/ protocol of maintaining of SILENCE. We are all baffled that why there is a double standard? Therefore, as a Life Member of HSNC & a resident of Raleigh, NC for 40 years, I respectfully urge our fellow devotees to control your children, kindly do your talking outside the building & respect our SANCTUARY. I know we can improve. I will be observing & provide periodic update on our temple Etiquettes. I pray that you will listen to the request of Mrs. Saroj Sharma for being SILENT once you enter the Temple! God Bless! Proud to be Indian American. Respectfully Submitted by, Arunava (Ron) Sanyal Life Member HSNC Active Member, Senior Center Dated, Wednesday, August 26, 2015 The BhumiPujan Ceremony for Turning Lanes and Learning Center in auspicious hands of Pujya Swamiji during Ganapati Utsav 17
