Cathedral Library Book of the Month - July SPON, Isaac History of the City and State of Geneva (1687) Isaac (better known as Jacob) Spon (1647-1685) was a French medical doctor and antiquarian. He travelled extensively and was one of the first educated men to become familiar with the classical antiquities of Greece and Rome. Cathedral Charities of the Month - July British Red Cross and Somerset Cruse The Cathedral is committed to supporting community groups which serve people facing challenging circumstances. The Week s Good Cause Donation Point provides a dedicated space for Somerset organisations, both to raise awareness of the group s aims, and to raise funds for that work.

In Our Thoughts: Amnesty Victim of Injustice for July - Kyrgystan Azimjan Askarov, a human rights defender and ethnic Uzbek, was accused of being involved in the murder of a police officer during violent clashes between ethnic Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbeks in Southern Kyrgyzstan. He was arbitrarily detained and tortured while in police custody. In September 2010, after an unfair trial he was jailed for life on fabricated politically motivated charges. In March 2016, the UN Human Rights Committee recognized that Azimjan Askarov was a victim of torture, had been arbitrarily detained, that the conditions of his detention were inhumane, and that he was denied a fair trial. In response the Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan reviewed his case. Instead of releasing Azimjan, the case was referred to Chui Regional Court, which in January 2017 upheld his sentence.
