2 I APAS assistant APAS assistant I 3 Flexible automation for the smart factory of the future APAS family your partner on the path to tomorrow s production Production is in a state of transition. There is a trend towards more individualized products with ever shorter life cycles. How could small production batches and peak loads be managed, yet also be realized economically? This requires future agile and flexible production concepts to be based on production systems that are quick and easy to set up. How can the APAS family support on the way to a flexible factory? The standardized production assistants APAS assistant, APAS inspector and APAS flexpress, as stand-alone solutions or combined in a cell, allow for: ad-hoc small series production semi-automation pilot production to ensure process validity agile engineering with early interim results quality tests The APAS family advantages are: modular design efficiency through reuse flexibility, as many settings are configurable using the software mobility, as it is not fixed to a permanent workplace Learn more about the APAS family. 4 I APAS assistant APAS assistant I 5 APAS base One base for many solutions APAS assistant APAS inspector APAS flexpress APAS custom Quick positioning Slim and compact Mobile and flexible The base of the APAS family The APAS family is based on the mobile platform APAS base with: an integrated, PC based control, a standardized operating concept and standardized connectivity. At the moment the APAS family consists of: the APAS assistant, the APAS inspector and the APAS flexpress. We are currently working on additions to the family. What are the distinctive features of the APAS family? The APAS family can integrate a customer-specific process on the platform APAS base The members of the APAS family are mobile due to the handrail and the quick release castors Because of the slim design, the family members can be easily integrated into existing production lines Join the APAS family. 6 I APAS assistant APAS assistant I 7 APAS assistant Flexible production assistant The APAS assistant is a versatile deployable automatic production assistant. As an intelligent and intrinsically safe robot system, the APAS assistant allows direct collaboration with people without expensive additional guarding. The unique sensor skin covering the robot arm and that reacts, as soon as somebody approaches, enables this. Sensor skin User interface The APAS assistant is operated with a mobile touchpad. On the dialogue-controlled user interface new work plans can be configured without any programming knowledge. These work plans are stored and can be retrieved at any time. Learn more about the User interface of the APAS assistant. Universal gripper The sensitive three-finger grippper of the APAS assistant enables frictional and form-fit gripping of components and products. Force and stroke control of the gripper finger allow smooth as well as firm gripping of the parts. In case of a collision the gripper fingers bounce and in this way offer trapping protection. Learn more about the universal gripper of the APAS assistant. Quick release castors With its quick release castors the APAS assistant can easily be moved around in the production environment. There is no need to bolt the APAS down at the work place. Learn more about the mobility of the APAS assistant. The robot arm is covered by a highly sensitive sensor skin, which reacts immediately when somebody approaches. Before there is any contact between man and machine, the APAS assistant stops and only continues its work, when the person is out of the danger zone. The APAS assistant is the first certified collaborating robot system for industrial use. Learn more about the sensor skin of the APAS assistant. Camera system With its 3D image processing system and the lighting that is integrated into the camera head, the APAS assistant is able to detect objects and the workplace within a room. Furthermore, image recognition enables precise gripping and placement, which minimizes the requirements for part feeding. Learn more about the camera system of the APAS assistant. APAS speedswitch Maximum performance combined with maximum safety: With this option the APAS assistant can monitor the application specific immediate vicinity and work at maximum speed. As soon as somebody enters the immediate vicinity, the APAS assistant automatically switches to a safer speed. Ask us and learn more about the new option of the APAS assistant.
8 I APAS assistant APAS assistant I 9 Hand in hand with the APAS assistant direct collaboration without additional guarding Machines should reduce staff workloads. Conventional systems are rigidly fixed, inflexibly operating systems requiring elaborate guarding to protect production staff. This, however, makes it more and more difficult to integrate these systems into todays flexible working world. Certified by the German employers liability insurance association, the APAS assistant is the first assistance system, which allows direct collaboration with people without additional guarding. Therefore, the APAS assistant is suited for many circumstances where workers require assistance to complete strenuous, monotonous or dirty tasks. This direct collaboration is made possible by using a highly sensitive sensor skin. The skin enables the APAS assistant to react when a staff member approaches. Before there is any contact between man and machine, the APAS assistant stops and only continues with its work once the danger zone is clear.
10 I APAS assistant APAS assistant I 11 Everything in control with APAS assistant Range of applications Today s machines are precise, fast and have a high degree of repeat accuracy. In most cases, the machines are only suited to a few specialized tasks and it is difficult to adapt them to changes in production conditions. Beside the investment cost, high additional costs will result as a consequence. In comparison, the APAS assistant enables new product variants and tasks to be configured not only in a fast, are not necessary. Taught work schedules can be stored and called up whenever necessary. This leads to quick availability and cost reductions. The integrated camera system memorizes the work schedule start point at the workplace so that the APAS assistant can calibrate itself after its position is changed. The APAS assistant can therefore be used in a versatile and flexible way at many different workplaces in production. The producbut also in a cost-efficient way. Using so-called work schedules, the APAS assistant can quickly be taught new tasks and adapted to changed conditions. The systems unique feature, is that robot, camera and gripper can be installed by using one and the same software. Furthermore, a step-by-step-dialog within the graphic user interface aids the operator whilst configuring the work schedules. Therefore programming skills tion assistant makes retrofitting automation to production lines easier because no major layout changes are necessary. Equipped with an IPC based control system, intelligent sensors, connectivity concepts and its software functions, in many ways the APAS assistant already qualifies as a cyber-physical system for Industry 4.0. Handling The APAS assistant enables high-precision automation of a variety of activities such as palletising, sorting and loading and unloading of production machines. Equipped with the suitable senors, the production assistant enables form-fit and force-fit gripping. Therefore, the APAS assistant is the ideal solution especially for tasks that are less suited for humans, such as the handling of potentially harmful or hot parts. Identification The APAS assistant is equipped with a 3D image processing system and a camera head. This enables the APAS assistant to independently analyze the environment and recognize and distinguish parts to be gripped. Additionally the image recognition ensures high precision when gripping and placing parts keeping the part feeding requirements low. Tooling With its servo-controlled and universal three-fingergripper, the APAS assistant can pick up various other tools and work with them. This broadens the APAS assistant application range enormously. In this way, the APAS assistant is also able to perform special jobs like checking end products such as control buttons or batteries. Documentation Nowadays extensive documentation is an integral part of many production processes. Thanks to its integrated cameras, the APAS assistant can record, evaluate, assign and deliver corresponding image data. The operator only needs to pass the data on to the end customer.
