ST. TERESA of AVILA STUDENT CENTER PAGE 2 1511 Laporte Ave. Valparaiso, IN 46383 Fr. Chris Corner Worship Schedule Dear friends in the Lord, I can t even begin to tell you how excited I am about our campus outreach this year. The university students have been back in session for two weeks now and already we are seeing a growing number of students coming to St. Teresa s and getting involved in various ways. Believe it or not, we passed out 50 welcome bags to new students attending St. Teresa s. The FOCUS missionaries have started their small groups, bible studies, and peer mentoring. Our peer ministers are already planning all sorts of events and opportunities in the areas of community life, social justice, and faith formation. It is such a joy to see our mission so alive. The students leaders are already planning the Fall retreat for September 22-24. We have changed the location this year so that we can bring more students on retreat. Last year there were about 10 students who came on retreat and this year our goal is to bring at least 20. It is going to be a bit of a stretch to do this and so the campus outreach team and myself are asking for mission partners in this goal. We are looking for 20 people who would be willing to sponsor students for this retreat. A full sponsorship is $100. This year s theme for the Fall Retreat is Seek the Lord. By sponsoring a student fully or even partially, you will be a partner in helping our university students have a life-changing encounter with Christ that will set them on the path of discipleship for the rest of their lives. With more and more college students falling away from the Church, you can help make a difference by providing this life-changing opportunity. Our community has always been so welcoming and generous, so much so that we have had parents of students calling us to thank us for making the college transition so easy for their sons and daughters. Thank you in advance for your generosity and loving response. To Jesus through Mary, Fr. Tithing is the means whereby we have the opportunity to give thanks to God; with that in mind, the community of St. Teresa of Avila tithes $450 weekly. The donation this week will go to Opportunity Enterprises. Spirituality Women's Bible Study The Scripture Sisters will begin the fall session on Sept. 7 from 10:00 a.m. to noon, continuing our study of the gospel of John. A background in Scripture is not required - we welcome all who would like to deepen their understanding of the scriptures and share their faith and life experiences with other faith-filled women. Books are available in the office for a small fee of $5.00, For more information, contact Ann Ruggaber (548-2970). God s Hands in Action St. Teresa of Avila Weekly Tithing St. Teresa s is a generous community and as such, the Stewardship Commission has formed a God s Hands in Action: Weekly Tithing Committee. To be more intentional in our giving, this group will select organizations that meet the following criteria: Follow the teaching of the Catholic Church Have a local/community connection About five years ago we changed our tithing amount to $450 weekly and we will continue to donate that amount to each organization. If there is an organization that is close to your heart and that meets the guidelines or you are interested in serving on the committee, please contact the committee at saintt.godshands@gmail.com. ST. TERESA of AVILA STUDENT CENTER PAGE 6 1511 Laporte Ave. Valparaiso, IN 46383 This is my 3rd year serving with FOCUS and I am excited to be serving as the Team Director at Valparaiso University. I graduated with my Marketing degree from St. Cloud State University, in Minnesota. It is difficult to say exactly where I am from (Valparaiso is my 9th U.S. city), but I call Minnesota my home state. I have my outdoorsy side that loves to travel, hike, camp, and run! I have the performance side of me that loves to dance, play piano, and sing! But at the heart of it all, I strive to put Christ at the center of all that I do and teach others how to do the same! Hello! My name is Veronica and I'm a first year missionary with FOCUS! I'm originally from Minnesota and I just graduated in 2017 from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. I'm so excited to move to Indiana and to get to explore a new state! I love getting coffee, playing my ukulele, painting with watercolors, and of course praying! The best ways to reach me are through my phone or via email! Hi! My name is Jack. I am from Minnesota, which is where I have lived my whole life. It is also where I went to college, at Winona State University. It was there that I had a profound encounter with Jesus, which has changed my life and is the reason that I have become a missionary with FOCUS. While at WSU I majored in Cell and Molecular Biology and minored in Biochemistry. I have a passion for doing anything in the outdoors: backpacking, hiking, canoeing, camping, but I especially enjoy fly-fishing! Music is another hobby I greatly enjoy and I love to sing, play guitar, and play banjo. Hey y all! I m Maggie and this is my second year working with FOCUS. I m blessed to serve on mission alongside my husband, Nick. We have been married for just over a year and now have a beautiful daughter Lily born this past February. Originally from Virginia, I graduated from University of Mary Washington with a degree in Geography, a concentration in Meteorology, and a minor in Climatology. I played goalie in lacrosse, absolutely LOVE coffee, live to be outdoors, and love to travel. (25 states and 2 continents down, 25 states and 5 continents to go!) After my first mission trip in high school, I fell in love with serving the Catholic church. Since then, I have been called by God to not only serve on various mission trips, both domestic and abroad, but to dedicate my entire life and family to His work. I am honored to be serving at Valpo and excited to share my passions, loves, family, and faith with everyone I meet! Hi there! I m Nick and this is my fifth year serving as a missionary with FOCUS. I am from New York, went to college in Ohio, and have been a missionary in New Jersey, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The Lord is slowly moving west, and I couldn t be happier about it. I m a family man and a football fan. I enjoy reading good theology and listening to the wonderful sounds of Celtic music and Weird Al. You can catch me playing disc golf on a nice day, or if it s raining, I m inside playing Catan.
