Insight and Opening ~ The Power of the Breath and Meditation Jack Kornfield & Stanislav Grof & Wes Nisker & Christina Grof plus special guest lecturer - neuroscientist Dan Siegel September 25 - October 2, 2011, Joshua Tree, California The Insight and Opening retreat is an intensive setting for exploring Holotropic Breathwork TM and Buddhist insight meditation. This unique blend of disciplines is presented in a safe and supportive environment as an opportunity for inner work, which can be integrated into daily life. The schedule for this retreat will be full. Each morning there will be instruction, lecture and periods of meditation. The afternoons will be devoted to the practice of Holotropic Breathwork and integrative activities such as mandala drawing. Evenings will include meditation and discussion in small groups facilitated by Grof Certified Holotropic Breathwork facilitators. Lectures will include the fundamentals of Buddhist Psychology and practice; the theory and practice of Holotropic Breathwork; the New Paradigm and a blend of topics from Eastern and Western Psychology. Each participant will work with a partner throughout the retreat and will have two sessions of Holotropic Breathwork as a breather and two as a sitter for their partner. This retreat provides 60 Continuing Education hours for MFT and Social Workers in California, which may also be reciprocal with other states. It counts as one elective module in the GTT program for certification in Holotropic Breathwork. COST AND REGISTRATION: The cost of this retreat is $1545 including food and accomodation, based on a room occupancy of 3-4 people. Some double rooms are available at a supplement of $250 per person. There will be 20 places available at the cost of accomodation only these places are for people under the age of 30, who would otherwise not be able to attend the retreat. Please contact GTT for an application if you feel you are eligible for one of these places (under 30 only). Payment should be made by with your registration. We expect the retreat to fill early, so if you know you want to come, register promptly. Registration: Sunday, September 25th, beginning at 2:00 pm, followed by supper and evening sessions. Departure: Sunday, October 2nd after lunch, approx. 1:30 pm ACCOMMODATIONS: There are two rooming options: sharing with 3-5 persons or a limited number of double rooms there are no single rooms available for this retreat. IMPORTANT: If we cannot give you your first choice of rooming, your fee will be adjusted to match the actual rooming situation you occupy. MEALS AND SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS: Meals begin on Sunday evening and go through to the following Sunday lunch. All meals in between are included. WHAT TO BRING: Comfortable clothes, walking shoes or hiking boots, jacket, hat, personal journal, sunscreen, water bottle, swimsuit, lip balm, flashlight (it is very dark in the desert). Keep in mind the desert climate it is very dry, so please remember sunscreen, hydration, and layered clothing for cool mornings and evenings. Sorry, no pets. BREATHWORK MATS AND COVERINGS: Participants will not be allowed to take pillows, blankets, or mattresses from sleeping rooms into the group room. Some mats, sheets and blankets (but not pillows) are provided, but if possible, especially for those driving, please bring a mat and bedding. CANCELLATION POLICY: $100 of your payment per each module is a non-refundable processing fee. The balance is refundable upon cancellation until September 10. There can be no refunds for any 2
reason after that date. If you send a registration form without sending a payment, once confirmed, the cancellation policy still applies and you will be expected to pay any amounts due. PRESENTER BIOS: Jack Kornfield, Ph.D. in clinical psychology, trained as a Buddhist monk in the monasteries of Thailand, India and Burma. He has taught meditation internationally since 1974 and is one of the key teachers to introduce Buddhist mindfulness practice to the West. His teachers include the Buddhist master Venerable Ajahn Chah from Thailand and Venenerable Mahasi Sayadaw from Burma. After many years of study in Asia, Jack Kornfield returned to the United States and cofounded, with Sharon Salzberg and Joseph Goldstein, the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts before going on to help create Spirit Rock Center in Woodacre, California. Jack Kornfield is a founding teacher of the Spirit Rock Center, where he currently lives and teaches. In addition to being a husband, father, and activist, Kornfield teaches at Spirit Rock Center and at other venues nationally and internationally, working with some of the greatest teachers of our time, including the Dalai Lama. Stanislav Grof, M.D., is a psychiatrist with over fifty years experience researching non-ordinary states of consciousness. Stan Grof is one of the founders and chief theoreticians of transpersonal psychology and founding president of the International Transpersonal Association (ITA). In this role, he organized, jointly with Christina, large international conferences in the United States, India, Australia, Czechoslovakia, and Brazil. At present, he Professor of Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), teaching in the department of Philosophy, Cosmology and Consciousness. He lives in Mill Valley, CA, writes books, conducts training seminars for professionals in Holotropic Breathwork and transpersonal psychology (for Grof Transpersonal Training) and gives lectures and seminars all over the world. Wes Nisker is an author, radio commentator, Buddhist meditation teacher and performer. He has studied Buddhist meditation for over thirty years and for the past twenty years has been leading workshops in Buddhist insight meditation and philosophy. Wes is an affiliate teacher at the Spirit Rock Meditation center in California and leads regular workshops at the Esalen Institute. Christina Grof is an author, teacher, artist, psychotherapist, founder of the Spiritual Emergence Network, and co-creator of Holotropic Breathwork. She is past-president of Grof Transpersonal Training, vice-president emeritus of the International Transpersonal Association (ITA), and an advisor to the board of the Spiritual Emergence Network. For almost thirty years, she has been active in the field of Transpersonal Psychology, which includes the spiritual aspects of human nature, as well as the emotional, mental, physical, and social aspects, as essential to a full understanding of the whole person. Dr Daniel J. Siegel received his medical degree from Harvard University and completed his postgraduate medical education at UCLA. Dan Siegel is currently a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, where he is also on the faculty of the Center for Culture, Brain, and Development and the Co-Director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA. An awardwinning educator, he is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and recipient of several other honorary fellowships. Dr. Siegel is also the Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute, an educational organization that focuses on how the development of mindsight in individuals, families and communities can be enhanced by examining the interface of human relationships and basic biological processes. Medical Form for Holotropic Breathwork Breathwork is intended as a personal growth experience and should not be looked upon as a substitute for psychotherapy. Holotropic Breathwork can involve dramatic experiences accompanied by strong emotional and physical release.
