THE READINGS ZECHARIAH 12:10-11, 13:1: God has mercy on Israel, as they suffer for their sins. GALATIANS 3:26-29: There is one common identity among all who are baptized in Christ. JUNE 18/19, 2016 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 3 From Fr. Peter s Desk 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family: Zechariah s message today in our first reading is confusing and difficult to put into context but the reference to on that day probably refers to the end time when the Lord will return to set things aright. On that day, God will pour a spirit of grace on David s house and all of Jerusalem. God will provide a purifying foundation that will wash away people s sin and uncleanness. This text has been interpreted to prefigure the Gospel account of Jesus prediction of his Passion and Death, with the reconciling and purifying nature of Jesus sacrifice reconnecting all to God. St. Paul, in his letter to the Galatians, clearly professes that being clothed in Christ, we are all children of God, related to one another as family, and made one in Christ. God intended such unity and harmony from the first moment of creation, and Jesus came to proclaim and model for us that such a reality is truly possible. The Kingdom of God is present among us. Jesus, in our Gospel today, asks the great Christological question, who do you say that I am? Peter affirms that Jesus is the Christ or Messiah of God. Jesus knew that his disciples would be called upon to travel the same road as their master and that they had to be willing to deny themselves, take up their cross daily and lose their life in order to save it. My dear friends, we call ourselves disciples of Jesus and Jesus reminds us that if one remains faithful throughout the ups and downs of this life, that our lives will be saved and much more besides. We are called to be faithful followers and to continue to build God s kingdom here on earth. Let us pray for the strength to live a life that will be pleasing to God. God Bless You Always, Fr. Peter STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflection Who do you say that I am? Jesus asks Peter in today s Gospel. Does my use of the gifts and talents entrusted to me accurately reflect my answer to that same question? How willing am I to deny myself, take up my cross and follow in His steps? Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who practice the spiritual work of mercy to instruct the ignorant by handing on the faith to kids and grandkids by their own example, or offering their gifts to teach in RCIA, confirmation, youth group or religious education. Faith Direct Did you know that June 20-the first day of summer-is National egiving Day? St. Andrew Catholic Church can take particular joy in this celebration, as the response to egiving in our church has been wonderful. To build on this success, I am setting a National egiving Day Challenge. My goal is for St. Andrew Church families to put envelopes on a permanent summer vacation and make the switch to egiving. This is especially important in the summer months, when many families may be out of town some weekends and St. Andrew Catholic Church does not receive their envelopes. It s easy for people to forget to catch up once they re back, and our weekly offertory can fluctuate as a result-making it harder to predict how much we will have to sustain our year-round ministries. The more families who welcome the beginning of summer by taking this National egiving Day Challenge, the more consistency and predictable our offertory will be month after month-and this will help us do even more to spread Christ s love throughout the community. Being part of this challenge is simple: Visit www.faithdirect.net and use our church code: NY296. Thank you for your continued support of our parish family with your time and talents as well as treasure! God Bless You, Fr.
