JOHN THE APOSTLE A Prayer As We Fight Greed Father, You are a gracious and generous Father who bestows on us bountiful gifts and sufficient supplies to meet our every need. When we get our eyes off that which we have and then set our heart s affections on material things that we don t have we can easily struggle with envy, discontentment, and jealousy which leads to an ungrateful attitude. Thank you for the extras that we enjoy in life, but we especially thank You for the essentials that we experience such as: *salvation *eternal life and *endless hope through Jesus Christ our Lord. Keep our focus on You, the treasure of our heart and our soul; the center of our marriage and family for one s life does not consists of possessions (Luke 12:15). It is in the name of Jesus that we pray. Amen. Good and prayerful stewards of St. John s, please continue to be prayerful with and for our World Youth Day traveling-home pilgrims Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer statue as Pope Francis visits Brazil and hundreds of thousands WYD pilgrims for whom Jesus is our sure and certain hope. -Fr. What are the origins of popular devotions? Unlike the sacraments themselves, popular devotions cannot be traced directly back to the ministry of Jesus and the practice of the Apostles. Most developed gradually over the years and even centuries as people sought ways of living out their faith. The origins of the more ancient devotions are often rather obscure. Some devotions, such as the rosary and scapulars, have come down to us as adaptations of the practices of religious orders. A few, such as devotion to the Sacred Heart and the Miraculous Medal, are considered to have their origin in a private revelation, that is, some vision or message given to one of the faithful. That we may recognize there will always be more than enough if we share God s gifts, we pray to the Lord. ALL CATHOLIC WOMEN are invited to join the Catholic Business Women Lincoln Chapter for the August meeting on Wednesday, August 7, from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm. Mass starts at 11:30 with Msgr.
