EDITED AND PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY OF THE AM CHAI BOARD OF DIRECTORS When I was in Budapest last December, I visited the Great Synagogue. Considered to be the largest synagogue in the world it is quite a large complex of buildings. As you enter the campus a narrow passage leads you into the inner yard where you see the memorial wall. The wall has names of Hungarian Jews who perished in the Holocaust. Even now the coldness of death and the emptiness of loss inevitably descend upon you as you gaze at the names on the wall. But then you proceed into the sanctuary and feel the awe, the grandeur of the shul. 3.300 seats for worshippers located on three different levels, beautiful decorations all that overwhelms you. They still hold regular services in the synagogue, and the Jewish life remains vibrant. You walk away with the feeling that in spite of all losses and tragedy we go on, life goes on. Isn t this the essence and the beauty of Judaism? The main psychological reason behind the High Holidays is precisely this: to help us leave the burden of pain behind and enter the New Year spiritually renewed and vibrant. May these days be the time of affirmation of health and life! L shana Tova Tikatevu! RABBI MICHAEL TILLMAN 6910 Barrington BLOCKED Rd., Hanover Park, IL!! "! # "! $ %! Hello Again! I hope that you had an enjoyable and safe summer. Next I would like to give you a picnic report. The weather was beautiful and we had 30 35 people in attendance. We served soft drinks, packages of pretzels, and cookies and crackers. The Hoffman Estates Fire Department along with the Police Department made an appearance. The Fire Department again supplied our ice. Jim Langerman again co-chaired the event. Thanks Jim. We had prizes for the kids and adults. Everyone said that they had a good time. Thank you again to the Goldberg s for bringing the beanbag toss. We were so busy that we did not have time to play the game. Also a big thank you to Ron Bass for supplying most of our adult prizes. Someone in our group saw Swans in the lake and could not understand why they kept going around in circles. The Swans are not real but they keep away the Geese. High Holidays are approaching and this year we have more room. We are going to have a big membership drive. As in the past membership includes High Holiday tickets to eligible household members. Look for us in the Daily Herald, Tribune, Sun Times, Jewish Federation News, and on WGN Radio. This is all pending Board approval. (I will be lucky if two items are approved.) Think MEMBERSHIP for 2007 and 2008. Call me with any leads or questions. Shalom, Dick Zittler As we approach the Labor Day week-end, marking the end of the summer season, we are also reminded that the High Holidays are drawing near. We look forward to the opportunity to see old friends we have not seen for the past year and pray together for a year of good health and happiness. As previously mentioned, we were unable to rent the Prairie Center to hold our High Holiday services this year. However, we were fortunate enough to find a church facility in Hanover Park available to us. We will meet in a sanctuary that is large enough to accommodate more people than we could last year. If you know of any family or friends that would like to join our congregation please contact our membership vice-president, Dick Zittler. Our choir has a few new members and they sound as wonderful as they always have. For a small congregation no one does it better than Am Chai. Last month we had our second, of what it looks like will be, annual picnic. Attendance was larger than last year and everyone had a wonderful time. The weather was perfect and we even had some one come all the way from South Carolina. The word is out that this is one super picnic. Thanks to Dick and Sharon Zittler, Jim Langerman and Ron Bass for their work in planning and supplying the prizes. Sharon and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy New Year. L Shana Tovah. Al Goldberg ***SPECIAL TREAT*** On Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007 we will have a speaker from the Anti-Defamation League. The brunch will start at 10 AM and the speaker will begin at 10:30 AM at the Kenneth BLOCKED Young Center. Topic will be Global and Local anti-semitism. Call 847-604-4060 for details.

It seems hard to believe that it is almost the High Holidays again. Time passes by so quickly. With the holidays approaching we can look forward to spending time together ushering out the old year and ushering in the New Year. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are so spiritually uplifting and yet solemn at the same time that you come away with a warm inner feeling. But let us also remember Sukkot and Simcha Torah from which we come away with a totally joyous inner feeling. In addition, we have the opportunity at this time of year to experience the beautifully mesmerizing sermons presented by Rabbi Tillman that always have a poignant message to their meaning. At the same time we get to enjoy the cantorial sounds of Art Reisman and the choir which seem to improve each year. Hopefully, the High Holidays are just the beginning of a year long association with one another as we spend time together at Friday Evening Services twice a month and at the monthly Sunday Morning Bagels 'n Lox Brunch & Discussion with the Rabbi. The topics, chosen both by the Rabbi and the Congregation, are always interesting, enjoyable, and yes- even exciting at times. Both Friday Evening Services and Brunch/Discussions are a great way for us as a Congregation to mix and mingle. Let us not forget our Fundraising events, which allow us to work together as a group enjoying each others company while doing something beneficial to Am Chai. In other words Am Chai is here all year round as an existing viable source for us to get together and spiritually enjoy each other s company. Let's not forget that we are here as a group because of Am Chai but at the same time Am Chai is here because of us. Each one needs the other in order to continue an existence. A reminder to everyone that "sponsoring" an Oneg Shabbat means you will supply the food or make a contribution for it. And "hosting" a Sunday Function simply means you supply the location and obtain the "edibles" but turn in your receipts to be reimbursed as there is no out of pocket expense! Wishing everyone a wonderfully beautiful L'Shana Tova! YIZKOR LIST Please call (847) 604-4060 or email info@amchai.org with any new names you would like included on our Yizkor List. All of the names on last year s list will be repeated this year. All names will be displayed on boards at the Yom Kippur Yizkor Service and they will be read aloud during the Yizkor service.
