Brennan, Jr. 22nd Anniversary Dorothy Eyre 2nd Anniversary Requested by her Family Dear Parishioners, Our national holiday of Thanksgiving is a holiday that is proclaimed each year by the president. George Washington made the first proclamation in 1789, asking Americans to unite in thanks for, among other things, the peaceful and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government. President Lincoln revived the tradition during the Civil War, asking Americans to give thanks with one heart and one voice. President John F. Kennedy in his proclamation of 1963 attempted to lay to rest some regional rivalry. The rivalry over the bragging rights as to where the first Thanksgiving was held in the United States. It was primarily between New England and Virginia. President Kennedy issued Proclamation 3560 on November 5, 1963, stating: "Over three centuries ago, our forefathers in Virginia and in Massachusetts, far from home in a lonely wilderness, set aside a time of thanksgiving. On the appointed day, they gave reverent thanks for their safety, for the health of their children, for the fertility of their fields, for the love which bound them together, and for the faith which united them with their God." It is good to gather and give thanks to the Lord God for the blessings we have received. May each of us recognize the blessings of God that nurture, sustain and enrich our lives. May we echo the words of Isaiah: Sing glory to the Lord, give praise across the world. Happy Thanksgiving! Peace, Fr. Tom 911 St. Ambrose
