DAY OF PENTECOST Alleluia. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in us the fire of your love. Alleluia. Emmanuel Lutheran Church June 4, 2017

Sunday, June 4, 2017 Day of Pentecost Holy Communion June 4, 2017 9:00 Service WELCOME TO EMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH INTRODUCTION Today's festival derives its name from the Jewish festival of Pentecost, observed fifty days after Passover. On the fiftieth day of Easter we celebrate the Holy Spirit as the power of God among us that heals, forgives, inspires, and unites. In the reading from Acts, images of wind and fire describe the Spirit poured out on disciples of all nations. In John's gospel the risen Christ breathes the Spirit on his followers on Easter evening. In the one Spirit we are baptized into one body, and at the Lord's table the Spirit unites us for witness in the world. PRELUDE O Day Full of Grace arr. Wold WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS The assembly stands. INVOCATION In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. GATHERING SONG O Day Full of Grace ELW 627 GREETING Alleluia! Christ is risen. Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. CANTICLE OF PRAISE GRACIOUS SPIRIT, HEED OUR PLEADING PRAYER OF THE DAY 3

Let us pray. O God, on this day you open the hearts of your faithful people by sending into us your Holy Spirit. Direct us by the light of that Spirit, that we may have a right judgment in all things and rejoice at all times in your peace, through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The assembly is seated. FIRST READING: Acts 2:1 21 (Please turn to page 123 in the New Testament of your pew Bible). Pentecost was a Jewish harvest festival that marked the fiftieth day after Passover. Luke portrays the Holy Spirit being poured out upon the disciples before the gathered and astonished people assembled in Jerusalem for the festival. Filled with the Spirit, the disciples were able to witness to the power of Christ's resurrection. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 12:3b 13 (Please turn to page 182 in the New Testament of your pew Bible). Paul is helping the Corinthians understand the relationship between our God-given unity and Spirit-created diversity. The Spirit creates the unity of faith and gives all Christians diverse gifts for the common benefit of all. We need one another's diverse spiritual gifts, because the same Spirit has given them to each person for the common good. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The assembly stands. 4

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION GOSPEL: John 20:19 23 (Please turn to page 119 in the New Testament of your pew Bible). The risen Jesus appears to his disciples, offering them a benediction, a commission, and the gift of the Holy Spirit. The holy gospel according to St. John, the twentieth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. The assembly is seated. SERMON Pastor Steven Wigdahl & Pastor José Lebrón The assembly stands HYMN OF THE DAY Spirit of the Living God (Sing 3 times). (next page) 5

NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,* who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. *Or, "who proceeds from the Father." The phrase "and the Son" is a later addition to the creed. 7

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Rejoicing in the risen life of Christ, let us pray for the church, the world, and all who are in need. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Congregational refrain: HEAR OUR PRAYER We bring to you, Christ, members and friends of Emmanuel who need your healing touch. (Names from our congregation ) Into your loving hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your abundant mercy, through Jesus Christ our risen Savior. Amen. Congregational refrain: Hear Our Prayer PEACE The presiding minister and the assembly greet each other in the peace of the risen Christ. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ's peace, and may say, "Peace be with you," or similar words. 8

The assembly is seated. OFFERING An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. During this time, the table is set. OFFERTORY Gracious Spirit, Dwell in Me arr. Scott Jan Gazdic, soloist Gracious Spirit, dwell with me; I would gracious be; help me now thy grace to see, I would be like thee; and with words that help and heal, thy life would mine reveal, and with actions bold and meek, for Christ, my Savior, speak. Truthful Spirit, dwell with me; I would truthful be; help me now thy truth to see, I would be like thee; and with wisdom kind and clear, thy life in mine appear; and with actions brotherly, speak Christ s sincerity. Holy Spirit, dwell with me; I would holy be; show thy mercy tenderly, make me more like thee; separate from sin I would and cherish all things good, and whatever I can be give him who gave me thee. Mighty Spirit, dwell with me; I would mighty be, help me now thy power to see, I would be like thee. Against all weapons hell can wield, be thou my strength and shield; let thy word my weapon be, Lord, thine the victory. Gracious spirit, dwell with me, I would be like thee! The assembly stands OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray. Be known to us, O Lord, in the breaking of the bread, as you were made known to the disciples. Receive these gifts, and the offering of our lives, that we may be your risen body in the world. Amen. DIALOGUE 9

PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. Fulfilling the promise of the resurrection, you pour out the fire of your Spirit, uniting in one body people of every nation and tongue. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 10

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. With this bread and cup we remember our Lord's passover from death to life as we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Amen. LORD'S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Invited to the Lord s Table are all baptized Christians who celebrate with us the Real Presence of Christ in the Sacrament. The Communion is administered by intinction, that is, the bread is handed to the communicant and the communicant dips the bread into the wine. If you are not able to take the wine, simply take the bread. Children are invited to come forward for a blessing. If you desire Communion, but are not able to come forward, please let an usher know. We ll bring it to you. If you do not wish to partake of the Sacrament, simply remain seated when your row is directed to come forward. Gluten-free wafers are available. Simply ask the person serving you communion. 11
