JUNE MISSION PROJECT FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY BEGINS WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1 We all need a plan for our money. Financial Peace University (FPU) is that plan! It teaches God's ways of handling money. Through video teaching, class discussions and interactive small group activities, FPU presents biblical, practical steps to get from where you are to where you've dreamed you could be. This plan will show you how to get rid of debt, manage your money, spend and save wisely, and much more! FPU classes meet for around an hour and a half each week for nine weeks, beginning Wednesday, June 1, at 7:00 p.m. in the Wesley UMC parlor. Childcare will be provided. The cost of the class materials is $93. This is a one-time membership fee; once you have purchased a membership, you can return to classes or the website as often as you would like. For more information or to learn how you can be a part of this class, talk with Nancy Marlow or e-mail her at nmarlow@charlestonwesley.org or visit daveramsey.com/fpu/locations/class/1020116 Wesley UMC "Made a Difference" in May by donating 176 jars of peanut butter and $160 which were delivered to the Charleston Area Churches Food Pantry and the CHS Pantry. Thank You! The Missions Work Area, in partnership with the Church and Society Work Area, has selected PADS as the June mission project. PADS stands for Public Action to Deliver Shelter, and it has been operating as a non-profit homeless shelter for over a decade in the former Mr. Donut building at 2017 Broadway Avenue in Mattoon. PADS recently received a generous gift of a site located at 1812 Western Avenue, and work is in process to clear the lot. Fundraising for a new PADS building has only attained 30% of the total needed, and the new building will not be built until all the money has been raised. According to Michael Stopka, Executive Director, in 2015 the shelter housed more than 180 guests with the majority from the Coles County area. PADS also works with other charitable organizations to find temporary shelter for the homeless when the PADS shelter is full and offers programs to help clients become self-sufficient. If you would like to help with this effort to deliver shelter to the homeless in Coles County, please write a check to Wesley UMC with PADS on the memo line or visit our website charlestonwesley.org and click on the $ button at the bottom of the page. If you prefer to make a cash donation, there are blue mission offering envelopes in the pew backs. Thank you very much for your support. 2 P age

PRAYER SQUARES and SHAWLS You may have noticed that the Prayer Square/Shawl display is no longer in the sanctuary hallway. It has been moved into the church office. If you would like to pick up a Prayer Square or Shawl, please talk to a staff member on Sunday morning, or come into the office during the week. We are always in need of more Squares and Shawls! Please place all completed items on the counter to your left as you enter the church office. Thanks! CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR CONFIRMANDS! Congratulations to the eleven youth who were confirmed and joined Wesley Church on Sunday, May 15! 1 st Row: Alexander Pearson, Peyton Daugherty, Pierson Smith, Jessi Vanatta, Abbie Bonnstetter and Director of Youth Ministries, Ben Pertl PLEASE TAKE THIS SHORT SURVEY Would you like to help shape the future of Wesley UMC? We are asking all members and regular attenders to go online and fill out a SHORT survey; it can be completed in about five minutes. Please click the link on our Facebook page or website, and ask all of your Wesley friends to do the same. We ask that you please fill out the survey only ONE time so the results will be accurate. Hard copies are available in the office for your friends who may not use the internet. Forms are available when the church office is open. THANKS for your help! 2 nd Row: Mahala VanHise, Taylor Fleming, Kaylee Wilson, Paige Chappell, Andrew Matheny and Sam Schuette JOIN US FOR FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT! Bring your family, bring a blanket (or lawn chairs), bring a big pillow Sunday, June 26th at 7:00 p.m. We ll enjoy lots of popcorn and a movie on the big screen. HANDBELL WORKSHOP Would you like to know more about Wesley UMC s handbells and handchimes? The bell choir is hosting a short workshop Saturday, June 4th from 9:30 to 11:00AM in the choir room (Room 121 in the Education Wing). We will talk about the rich history of bells in the world and in our church. We will give you time for exploring how the bells play and the experience of playing in a group. This is a "stand alone" day with no further commitments (unless, of course, you want to!). All ages are invited to join us. For more information, call or text Ruth Ann Craig, 217-276-7273, or email her at rtcraig@consilidated.net. Come, play with us, and learn more about this unique ministry in our church! WESLEY S CAREGIVERS The small group ministry called Caregivers formed 10 years ago in 2006. Our mission is to care for the caregiver. We are a confidential group offering support, information and understanding to anyone caring for someone else, whether they are a loved one or a friend. We meet at 6:30PM the 4 th Tuesday of every month in Room 129 at WUMC. We are an open group and invite anyone who is, or will soon be, caregiving to join us. For more information, call Ruth Ann Craig (217-345-7273) or Sue Harvey (217-294-2082). NEW CAREGIVING SECTION IN THE WESLEY LIBRARY The Wesley library now has a shelf labeled Caregiving. All of the books discuss different caring issues for those who are helping loved ones live the best quality of life possible. One of the books in the caregiving section is The Caregivers Toolbox. Inside you will find chapters about forms that will make communicating with medical personnel, insurance companies and governmental agencies much easier to navigate. This practical book serves as a resource tool as you search for the best care for your loved one and yourself. You are welcome to check out this, and any other caregiving books, by signing them out and returning them when you are finished. Please fill out the library card and leave it in the box on the shelf. The library is in Room 108 across the hall from the church office and is available any time the church building is open. Congratulations to grandparents Jim & Dorothy Bennett on the birth of their grandson Asher James Bennett born in Dallas, TX on May 5 th to Alex & Heather Bennett. 4 P age

They will resume meeting weekly after Labor Day. All are welcome to join the group at any time. Talk to Pastor Janice Kahl if you have questions. Did you ever want to learn to crochet? Maybe you would like to refresh those skills learned long ago. A workshop will be offered on Saturday, June 11, at 10:30 a.m. at the church. We would like to pass this tradition down to you! There are no strings attached, but you may be able to help us with prayer squares, prayer shawls, or other Crochet-for-Christ projects. You don t need to bring any crochet hooks or yarn. (CONTINUED) 5 Page

(CROCHET WORKSHOP CONTINUED) We have plenty. We do need to know that you are coming. Either call the church office or sign the Making Connections card at worship expressing your interest. If you have questions, please contact Joyce Chase or Pastor Janice Kahl. WOMEN S TUESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY We will be offering a new Beth Moore Bible study for women this summer, When Godly People Do Ungodly Things. This six-week study will begin on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. in the church library. The study includes personal daily assignments as well a weekly 30 to 40 - minute DVD and discussion. The student workbook costs $12.99 plus tax and shipping. If you would like to be a part of this study, you can call Nancy Marlow at the church or e-mail her at nmarlow@charlestonwesley.org. SOMETIMES IT S HARD TO ASK FOR HELP We re brought up to be strong, selfsufficient, independent people. We tend to think that if we ask for help, it is a sign of weakness. So we try to keep our struggles hidden, stuffed deep inside. However, that s not God s plan. Galatians 6:2 says, Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. God wants us to care for others and allow others to care for us in our time of need. If you re sad or struggling inside, don t suffer alone. Ask for help. We ve got a team of Stephen Ministers who are ready to listen, care, encourage, pray, and help you through a tough time. (It s confidential too!) Find out more about Stephen Ministry by talking with Nancy Marlow or e-mail her at nmarlow@charlestonwesley.org. Our Stephen Ministers are there to care! PLEASE PRAY FOR ANNUAL CONFERENCE Each year, members of our conference (Illinois Great Rivers Conference) gather in Peoria, IL for Annual Conference. This year s conference will take place June 8 11. Annual Conference is where the business of the church is done everything from ordaining elders to hearing reports, to participating in inspiring worship. Our District the Embarras River District has been asked to hold the Conference in our prayers that week, especially on the morning of Saturday, June 11. You can keep up with the Conference by visiting http://www.igrc.org/ac2016. 6 P age
