THE MASJID A focus on mosques of the world THE first masjid on earth, say the scholars, was built by Nabi Adam [as] with the guidance and help of the Angels. Adam, they say, wanted to create an earthly replica of the Holy House he had seen in Paradise. Today the site of this building is called the Ka bah, around which Muslims walk devotionally seven times in the same way Angels do in the Seventh Heaven. The Ka bah, which is the central focus of the Makkah Sanctuary, was transformed into the Qiblah the direction of prayer in 623 CE, some 17 months after the Prophet s [saw] migration from Makkah to Madinah. This was when the Prophet [saw] was informed in Surat ul-baqarah: We will make you turn towards a qiblah that will please you. Previously, the Muslims had been facing Jerusalem or al-quds, where the son of Adam, the Prophet Shith [as], had built the second masjid on earth 40 years after the one in Makkah. Al- Quds, the place of holiness like Madinah and Makkah is a sanctified devotional space specifically blessed by the Qur an in Surat ul-isra : [He] who took His slave on a night journey from al-masjidal-haram (Makkah) to the farthest mosque (Jerusalem), the neighbourhood which We have blessed So honoured are these sanctuaries that the Prophet [saw] has told us via the honoured Companion, Abu Darda, that prayer in Makkah has a spiritual value of 100,000 times more than in any other masajid, except for Madinah (1,000 times) and Al- Aqsa (500 times). The word masjid is derived from the word sajada, which means to prostrate. In other words, a masjid is a place of prostration. The modern word mosque originally derives from the Italian version of masjid, moscheta, which became mezquita in Spanish and mosque in French. Islam, the final revealed faith before the apocalyptic End Days, is unique in that the whole earth except for places such as bathrooms has been declared a masjid. This is deeply symbolic, indicating that Allah is aware of all of His Creation. It demands that not only other beings, but also every atom of the universe, must be treated with respect in the omni-presence of the Creator. The first masjid, al-quba, which the Qur an says was built on the foundations of piety, was constructed out of stones, palm trunks and fronds. The Madinah masjid, which was adjacent to the Prophet s home, was built of the same, slowly evolving into its present form. The architecture of the masjid has also evolved over the centuries with unifying features such as domes, mimbars and mihrabs reflected in a myriad of cultures. Travelling the world, we see the wooden pagodas of China, the Byzantine lines of Jerusalem and Damascus, the pencil-thin minarets of Istanbul, the towering portals of Samarkand and the tiled fantasias of Persia. All are focused on one thing the pleasure of Allah the reward of building a masjid the receiving of another one in Paradise for the builder. The metaphor of the masjid traditionally more a community centre than just a place of worship is reflected via its features. The old Turkish masajid based on extensive waqf used to have schools, food kitchens, funeral parlours, hospitals, shops and libraries attached to their premises. Over the centuries most masajid have been built with a dome whether the onion dome of Mughal India, the conical dome of Anatolia, the fluted domes of Bukhara or the flatter, ascending domes of the Ottomans to symbolise that in the prayer hall the worshipper is standing under the canopy of the heavens.

Even the pillar inspired by the palm trunk thousands of years ago enjoys its own metaphor of holding up the skies and the truth of the revealed word. The mimbar or the pulpit as a raised platform, has enjoyed an equally symbolic evolution. Originally, the Prophet [saw] used to deliver his Friday sermon from a palm trunk. He used it to give himself an elevation above the congregation. When the crowds got bigger, and there was a need for a higher platform, the palm trunk was heard weeping. The Deloitte and Dubai Islamic Forum has estimated that there are currently over 4 million masajid serving just over 1.6 billion Muslims in the world. When he built the Sulaymaniyyah masjid in Istanbul over 700 years ago, Sinan the famous Ottoman architect would lie on his back in the mihrab fine-tuning the acoustics of the masjid with water-filled glass jars. According to tradition, the Prophet [saw] ordered that the old mimbar be buried below the new one. Today, the mimbar resembles an ornate staircase leading up to the heavens. These beautifully carved and plastered mimbars are ascended on Fridays by the imam who delivers the khutbah, or the sermon. The imam will either take three steps, whilst holding his ceremonial staff, and turn to face the jama at before him, or ascend the stairs, but not to the top as the top section is left vacant out of respect for the Prophet [saw]. In the days of the Caliphate, the mimbar was a platform of enormous authority, with the Caliph delivering his edicts from it via his imams. The mihrab, the prayer niche, indicates the direction of the Qiblah. It is the focal point of the imam, who is followed by the worshippers. Apart from also symbolising the extension of prayer into the outside world, the shape of the mihrab and even the dome would offer acoustic help to the imam, allowing his voice to project back into the prayer hall in eras when there were no microphones. The minaret, a tower, represents the elevated space from which the call to prayer is made, from where the successful message is delivered. Before electricity, the muadh-hin would climb the stairs of these towers to make the call to prayer, the adhan, from a balcony. Currently, the tallest minaret in the world is at the King Hasan masjid in Casablanca that was constructed in 1993. It stands above the Atlantic at 200 metres and can be seen for kilometres out to sea. A minaret of 265 metres is currently under construction in Algiers, the capital of Algeria. As Islam expands to all corners of the globe, masajid are fast becoming a naturalised feature of its city landscapes. For example, there are 1,000 masajid in Great Britain, 3,000 in France and over 2,000 in the US. The Deloitte and Dubai Islamic Forum has estimated that there are currently over 4 million masajid serving just over 1.6 billion Muslims in the world. The whole world is a masjid.
