Adv entures in Ministry! As I begin this letter to you it is the day after our Congregational Meeting. I am in Worcester, MA, participating in a three day Bishop s Convocation pastors and church leaders from across our Synod gathering for three days of worship and study. Yesterday before our Meeting many of the Deacons, the Mutual Ministry Committee, and I gathered in my office. They laid their hands on me and on Paul Rhoda, lifting us up for God s wisdom and strength. Tonight in our worship of Evening Prayer we heard God s word proclaimed, we raised our voices in praise of God, and those that chose to do so came forward for the laying on of hands and anointing with oil for healing and renewal. These were different hands resting on me, but still the hands of God s people. It is good to be here, right now. Oh, it is good to be with Prince of Peace members, too. I love you, and I have seen and felt the love that you have for me and my family. But, right now I am enjoying being one of many pastors, not the Pastor. (Although the coffee is better at Prince of Peace!) There were elements of our Congregational Meeting which were good. We had good attendance, including many of our confirmed youth who were allowed to vote for the first time due to the change Prince of Peace made to its Constitution at our May Congregational Meeting. It was good to have Peter Thompson there, moderating our meeting. His presence and leadership was gracious and effective. Paul is an excellent President, but he is one of us, and I was glad that he was able to speak and act as a member during this meeting, not as an official. It was good to have the opportunity to gather as the body of Christ at Prince of Peace, to share the pain and the strength of being God s people, called to serve in a struggling and confusing world. It was good to provide this opportunity for every member to speak what was on their hearts and minds. Each person is a child of God, each doing their best to follow God s will and to love their neighbor as themselves. There were also elements which were... less than good. Some, I already know, did not feel everything was fully or clearly brought out. When emotions run strong not everyone is able to speak before large groups. Sometimes the process itself gets in the way. With each vote that was taken there were winners and losers. In a perfect world there would be no voting, no winners and losers, for God s purposes would be clearly revealed. For now, we live in faith:... the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. There are times when I serve as Pastor to an individual or family and times when I serve as Pastor of the whole congregation. It is my privilege (and I am thankful to members who allow me!) to do both. I don t know, yet, what particular families within our congregation will do. I had a chance to speak with some of our families after the meeting, but all of us needed time to process what had just taken place. As Pastor of the congregation, I feel Prince of Peace has spoken clearly. We will remain a congregation of the ELCA. We will continue to give our first fruits to the work of the larger Church. It is time to move on, to return our full attention to the work we are called to do here on Eastern Avenue. Some long time members have felt the need to leave Prince of Peace. Others may yet choose to do so. We grieve those separations, we give thanks for the time God allowed us to be together, and we remember that God s people can never be truly separated. We move on to those new things God is constantly bringing about. We give thanks for those who continue their service at Prince of Peace! We give thanks for those God will continue to bring into our midst. (This November we will have Installation of New Members, including several Baptisms!) We give thanks for the work God gives us to do, and the great riches we have to do it. 2 Pastor Jon

Christians Under Construction SUNDAY SCHOOL UPDATE: The work is continuing this month in Sunday School. I asked Beth Pfeffer what has been going on in the Jesus Room (2nd 6th grades) during the month of October. Here is what she said.. Trent, Hunter, Harrison, Jacob and Ryan have been meeting weekly to engage with one another on a journey to a fuller understanding of the Lord s Prayer. This classroom is led by Jayne Labbe, Becky Pearce and myself. Our Father, who are in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come.. This is as far as we have gotten as of October 18th. Drawings, a history of names and those names used by God, as well as games and activities help students to share their thoughts on the meaning of the Lord s Prayer. As a group, they are making connections to how powerful prayer is and the importance of talking to God on a regular basis. Sounds like the Jesus Room is hard at work on their Walls of Faith! This year for our Sunday School offering we will be raising money for Kaoma. Each class offering will go for different things needed. The Holy Spirit Class (Pre-1st grade) money will go toward baby chicks. The Jesus Room (2nd-6th grade) will be buying hoes and fertilizer. The Martin Luther and God classes (confirmation and youth) will be joining together to raise money for corn seed. And finally, the Job & Disciple classes (adults) will see how many oxen they can buy. Check the bulletin board beside the men s bathroom to see how each class is doing. This year s Christmas Pageant (which will take place on December 20th during Sunday School) is entitled Our Family Memories of Christmas. One of the exciting things that happens in this play is that the kids will be interviewing members and family about their Christmas memories. In this way, we will all get to share our own stories with each other. In the next few weeks, the Sunday School kids will be taping these interviews and having their pictures taken with these special people. I know I can hardly wait for the pageant to arrive to hear these wonderful memories! That s it for November news. Next month, the youth and confirmation classes will be sharing things about their class. Rebecca Vogel WICKED GOOD GATHERING Youth Event Kate, Christopher, Justin, Paul, Tim and Beth attended the youth event hosted by Redeemer Lutheran Church held at Penobscot Bay YMCA in Rockport on Oct. 16th 18th. Salt & Light was the biblical theme for the event. Matthew 5:13-16 had us working to define and find how we are Salt & Light. Activities included small groups Bible Study, swimming, wall climbing, shopping in Camden, games, food and singing. Our choir provided music at the Sunday worship service at Nativity Lutheran in Rockport and we shared our Salt & Light highlights as part of the sermon. A wicked good time was had by all!!! Special thanks to Pastor Jon and Rebecca for the loan of their vehicle so we could all ride together!!! 4

Another EXTRAOrdinary Giving Opportunity! By Betty Balderston, Stewardship Chairperson Thanksgiving weekend brings us another EXTRAOrdinary Giving opportunity. This 5th Sunday event allows Prince of Peace members to provide an extra weeks worth of giving to help balance our congregational budget. Through your generosity, our last EXTRAOrdinary Giving event provided approximately $2,500. to help bring us current with our monthly expenses and benevolences. For our November 29th opportunity, please consider giving generously once again to help our budget during the last quarter of the year. Since our second giving opportunity falls on Thanksgiving weekend, please feel free to provide your EXTRA giving on November 22nd if you plan to be away on the 5th Sunday of November. When including your EXTRAOrdinary Giving with your regular offering, please note the amount you intend for this special giving event. As you continue to support our church, our staff, our ministries and the many organizations that receive regular benevolences from your giving, remember that you are giving to the Lord! Generosity opens the door to forgiveness. Forgiveness opens the window to mercy. Mercy brings us into God s heart where all debts are paid. Matthew 18:21-35 Highlights of October 12, 2009 Council Meeting 1) We welcomed our newest Council member, Bobbi Jo Burdin, who will lead the Youth Committee. 2) Twenty-seven Time and Talents Surveys have been turned in so far. Please see Betty Balderston if you would like to share your time and talents with Prince of Peace. 3) We reduced the monthly transfer amount into the fuel oil reserve account, due to lower fuel costs. This will result in a savings of over $2,000 a year. 4) Our next EXTRAOrdinary Giving opportunity will be November 29 which is Thanksgiving weekend. If you are able, please give an extra weekly offering on that day to help offset our financial deficit. 5) With regret, we voted to remove the following people from membership, at their request: Alyssa Lee, Nora and Paul Armstrong, Joe and Arlene McVety, Rod and Irene Hill, and Sandy Bernard. 6) We voted to accept the following people as new members pending each family s visit with Pastor Jon: Scott, Laura, Natalie, Chase and Hannah Fossett, Kelly and Eryka Minoty, Diane, Tim, Rex, and Ricki Elliot, Jackie Millet, and PJ and Peter Matthies. 7) Council finalized POP s Statement of Faith for presentation to the congregation at the Special Congregational Meeting on October 18. It came at a most opportune time, as we suffered a few financial set backs with loss of subsidized health insurance (evidently, Vicars make way too much $...who knew?!) and a computer failure. Internship has been a marvelous learning experience. I have a superb supervisor and the congregation has been very supportive and affirming of my ministry and of our entire family. Linda is especially finding her niche as a clergy spouse. Annika loves 7th grade at Butler Junior High and Emilio attends preschool 3 days a week in the church basement. He is charming folks with his smile just like always! Hard to believe that 2 months of internship have already passed and that I m in my 3rd year of Seminary. Much time has flown by, but one important constant has been the love and support we ve received from POP. It means the world to us - we thank you, we love you and we miss you. Minneapolis-based Thrivent, a not-for-profit financial-services firm, will spend $125 million on tax-exempt activities in 2010, down from about $172 in the prior year. The decision was partly driven by the downturn in the financial markets, said Tim Lehman, senior vice president of member experience strategy for Thrivent. The company expects to restore funding to tax-exempt activities in the coming years. Thrivent s outreach programs range from offering financial education programs to matching donations. Along with budget changes, Thrivent will eliminate two of its giving programs, Care and Congregations and GivingPlus, which provides a 50 percent match for donations members make to Lutheran organizations, Lehman said. The programs will be replaced with a new offering, Thrivent Choice, which allows members to direct funds to organizations of their choice. At Prince of Peace Thrivent members can still contribute to Sonshine Nursery School and have their donations matched by Thrivent through the GivingPlus program until the end of the 2009 year. This year the Care in Congregations program has benefited Sonshine Nursery School. The church received $500 for materials used to refurbish the school playground and $250 for Family Fun Day. The proceeds were used to replenish the scholarship fund. Let us more and more insist on raising funds of love, of kindness, of understanding, of peace.
