The Catholic Church in Jersey One Catholic Parish for the Island of Jersey 27/28 September 2014 ~ Twenty Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Year A THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK The cemetery is full of indispensable people. This is a wise saying. Life goes on without us. I was reminded of this recently when I unexpectedly fainted on a stone floor. I gave myself concussion from which I ve been slowly recovering. It was good for my humility two Sundays ago when I had to obey Father Kevin as he wouldn t let me celebrate any Mass, arranging for others to do so. Ironically, I was rushing around, before going to celebrate Mass on the anniversary of my arrival in Jersey 15 years ago, when I ended up flat on my back on the floor unable to do anything. It was a humbling experience which reminded me that man proposes and God disposes. I am now struggling with being told to slow down and learn to say no, when I was always taught to say yes. Perhaps because a priest hasn t a wife to prick the balloon of his conceit, he is tempted to think that everything relies on his energies and efforts rather than on the grace of God. The story is told of Good Pope John, now St John XXIII, who lay awake at night worrying about his responsibilities when he was first elected Bishop of Rome. It then dawned on him that it was the Holy Spirit who led the Church and not himself, so he turned over and went to sleep. In his humanity, as St Paul tells us today, Jesus recognised his total dependence on his Father. He also recognised that his humble sharing of our humanity made him more approachable to others, especially those who were conscious of their human weakness and sinfulness. As someone said to me last week, when I complained about my inability to do all that I wanted, Welcome to the human race! I shall try to be a better student of this wisdom in the future.
