2 The Church of St. George Long Lake, Minnesota A Letter from the Pastor WELCOME to... THE CHURCH OF ST. GEORGE Thank you to all our visitors, guests and extended family members for joining us this weekend. Call the office at (952) 473-1247 or email us at stgeorge@msn.com if you would like more information about the parish or to register. Dear Parishioners, Happy Mother s Day to all the women of our parish who celebrate this day of special tribute to mothers. You have given and nurtured life, consoled and encouraged your children, taught and modeled the faith. Your parental role reflects your selfless love and unbounded sacrifices. May you have the love, devotion and gratitude of your children always! Thank you for the gift of life and for choosing life! On Memorial Day, May 30th, an outdoor Memorial Prayer Service will be offered at St. George Cemetery at 10:15 am, weather permitting. From the beginning, the Church has honored the memory of the dead. The Church commends the dead to God s mercy and offers her prayers, especially the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, on their behalf. All who die in God s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. (CCC #1030) On this national holiday later this month, we are all invited to assist the dead in their time of purification with our prayers for them at Mass on Memorial Weekend. We not only remember the deceased men and women of the armed services (in former wars and conflicts as well as casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan in more recent years), but also our own family members, friends, and parishioners. A family visit to the cemetery is also most appropriate on this day. There the members of each family may gather to pray in thanksgiving for the gift of Faith transmitted to them earlier by their deceased loved ones as well as to commend the souls of their loved ones to God s enduring love and mercy. Fr. Mark Juettner Pastor Centennial Corner Hello parishioners! I am excited to share what I have learned about the history of the Church of St. George. Please get in touch with me if you have any information or memories that would add to the story of our parish. My email is mgflannnery@gmail.com and my phone number is 952-913-3136 - Meg Flannery This week I would like to share the story of the first rectories for St. George, as they are interesting stories. When Fr. Nolan was appointed the resident pastor for St. George by the Archdiocese in 1948, the parish had to find lodging for him. Up to that point, St. George had shared pastors with the parish of St. Bartholomew, and they lived in a rectory in Wayzata. The very first rectory for St. George was a summer cottage belonging to Anthony Baanack on the east end of Long Lake until December 15, 1948, when it got too cold to stay there. St. George then bought an unused war surplus warehouse from Fort Snelling. The warehouse was cut in half and moved to a lot behind the original church at a cost of $700. The men of the parish worked and turned it into a 4 room bungalow. Fr. Nolan lived in this unique retrofitted rectory for 4 years (1949-1954). When Fr. Nolan moved into a larger rectory in 1954, the Fort Snelling rectory was moved elsewhere in the neighborhood. The second rectory for St. George was temporarily a house across from the church while a new rectory with room for a housekeeper and more office space was built and completed in 1957 by George Schmitz and Clarence Hammes with labor from parishioner volunteers. This rectory still stands in its original location and is now a private residence. Congratulations to our Confirmants Our 23 Confirrmation students are being confirmed at the Basilica of St. Mary s on Sunday, May 8th at 1:30pm. Julia Abraham Nayely Barajas Natalie Brockman Luis Alberto Cisneros Emily Clear Michael Delaney Katherine Dore Mara Gomez Gonzalez Sarah Johnston Cole Langton Antony Maxana Fernanda Medina Aguirre Alexis Mullen Brayan Narvaez Tyler Olsen Alondra Rojas Nick Simifranca Alec Stevens Katie Tucker Ivy Barrett Osvuldo Villulpando Felipe Villulpando Melissa Reyes The parish also wants to thanks teachers Melba Reyes and Camille Curtiss for preparing students for this special sacrament! GRADUATION and SACRAMENTAL RECEPTION Sunday, May 15th, Community Center After 9:15am Mass All graduates, Confirmants, First Communicants, and members of the parish are invited to a reception next weekend after Sunday 9:15am Mass. No RSVP is necessary.
