Page 6 Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Connecticut 2017 MARTIN EDE Martin Ede was born in June of 1967 in Durham in the northeast of England to Terence and Eileen Ede. When he was two, the family, now including a sister, moved south near Portsmouth and Southampton on the south coast. Martin attended Meoncross School, but in 1975 moved to Portsmouth Grammar School and remained there until 1985 when the family moved to the United States. While in England, Martin was active in the Cub Scouts as well as fencing, judo and lots of reading. Upon arrival in the U.S., Martin spent a year at Amity Regional High School, then entered the University of Connecticut. He graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. He took a job as a project geologist at Technical Environmental Specialists in Manchester. After working for two additional companies, he decided to move into teaching science. He entered Southern Connecticut State University and earned a Master of Science degree in Environmental Education as well as his teaching certificate. He taught ninth grade physical science at Central High School in Bridgeport, as well as electives in Environmental Science. Three years later Martin moved to teach in both high schools in Stratford, and then to the Independent Day School in Middlefield, where he taught biology and physical sciences. Martin has many interests including travel, golf and the martial arts, having attained a black belt in Aikijitsu Karate. Ever the student of history, he has traveled to various European countries as well as to Mexico, Egypt and Turkey. His passion for reading and history led to an interest in Freemasonry, spurred by the fact that his old school had a Masonic Lodge associated with it. And he was later inspired by the writings of John J. Robinson, particularly The Pilgrim s Path. Martin was raised in Hiram Lodge No. 1 in 1999. He subsequently became interested in both the York and Scottish Rites, which he proceeded to join in 2001. He has served twice as Worshipful Master of Masonic Lodge of Research, in 2004 and 2011; of Hiram Lodge in 2005; as High Priest of Franklin Chapter, RAM and as Thrice Illustrious Master of Harmony Council, R&SM. He then served as Secretary of both York Rite bodies and was named a Knight of Ish Sodi by The Most Puissant Grand Council of Royal & Select Masters of Connecticut in 2009. Named to the Officer line of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Connecticut, he was elected and served as Most Excellent Grand High Priest for 2016-2017, and was re-elected for 2017-2018. He is also in the officer line of The Most Puissant Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Connecticut. Martin has served as Sovereign Prince of the Elm City Council, Princes of Jerusalem, and as Thrice Potent Master of E. G. Storer Lodge of Perfection. He takes part in many of the degrees of the

2017 Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Connecticut Page 7 Valley of New Haven and Lafayette Consistory. Martin was honored by the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite by being coroneted with the 33º in 2010. He serves as Secretary of the Masonic Temple Association of New Haven and Assistant Historian for Hiram Lodge No. 1. Martin has become quite fascinated with the history, philosophy and esoteric nature of Freemasonry and has also joined Philosophic Lodge of Research, which he served as Master, and has become a corresponding member of the American Lodge of Research of New York, the Scottish Rite Research Society, the Grand College of Rites, the Philalethes Society and the Masonic Book Club. He was invited to become a member of Nathan Hale Council No. 78 of the Allied Masonic Degrees, where he served as Sovereign Master; and Connecticut College, Societas Rosicrucianae in Civitatibus Foederatis, He is a member of and served as Excellent Chief of Mohawk Council No. 28, Knight Masons in 2010. He has contributed a number of research papers to the Connecticut research lodges, some of which were also graded for history classes at SCSU. He has also served as a Grand Custodian for the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Connecticut. ANNUAL SESSION The 219 th Anniversary Annual Session of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Connecticut was held in the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Meriden, Connecticut. The Grand Banquet was held on Friday, 2 June 2017, and the Annual Convocation was held on Saturday, 3 June 2017. GRAND BANQUET The annual Grand Banquet in honor of Most Excellent Grand High Priest Martin Ede and Most Puissant Grand Master J. Andrew Birdsall was held at the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel in Meriden, Connecticut commencing with a social hour at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, 2 June 2017. Approximately eighty Companions, guests and ladies were present. Emcee William L. Miller, II, MEPGHP, welcomed all present and called for an invocation by Companion Joseph R. Krusienski, Illustrious Grand Chaplain of the Grand Chapter. Companion Miller led the gathering in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, followed by one verse of the Star Spangled Banner. Companion Miller introduced the distinguished guests at the head table.

Page 8 Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Connecticut 2017 As the banquet progressed, Companion Miller introduced the distinguished guests from other jurisdictions seated at the several tables. MPGM Birdsall asked that his family be escorted to the podium where he presented flowers to his mother Karen and his wife MaryAnn. He gave a tribute to his father John for all his support as he grew up. Companion Miller called upon the following to speak on behalf of their organizations: Jamie Owens, Grand Worthy Advisor, Connecticut, International Order of Rainbow for Girls, and Anne Needham, Supreme Inspector. Zachary Aubin, Deputy State Master Councilor, Connecticut State Chapter, Order of DeMolay, and Brian E. Beals, Executive Officer. Companion Beals presented a DeMolay Alumni Association Certificate to MPGM Birdsall. Charles A. McCollum, Right Eminent Grand Commander, Grand Commandery of Knights Templar in Connecticut MEGHP Ede offered a few remarks and noted that today is his 50 th birthday, upon which he was serenaded by the companions and guests with Happy Birthday. MEGHP Ede then presented to Companion James S. McNeely IV of Pythagoras Chapter No. 17 the Ephraim Kirby Citation for Meritorious Service. MPGM Birdsall presented to Companions Michael D. Sabia, Jr and Richard L. Allen the Knight of Ish Sodi awards. MPGM Birdsall then requested Companion James S. McNeely to escort his wife Anne to the podium where he asked her to present to her husband the Philip J. Jones Award for Distinguished Masonic Service. Companion William K. Barr, MEPGHP and General Grand Chapter Ambassador for Connecticut was called upon for his remarks, whereupon he presented the General Grand Chapter Bronze Medal Award to Companion Clyde W. Kayser II. He also presented to MEGHP Ede a plaque containing his PGHP Certificate from General Grand Chapter. Brother Theodore J. Nelson, Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Connecticut, offered his remarks and greetings from the Grand Lodge. The Benediction was given by MEPGHP Bruce R. Bellmore, Illustrious Grand Chaplain of the Grand Council R&SM of Connecticut. Following the banquet, drawings were held for the raffle gifts. The proceeds were given to Companion Vincent A. Cowie for the benefit of his daughter Jamie who has been diagnosed with cancer.

The Secretary called the roll of the Chapters thus verifying that a quorum of nine Chapters were represented. The Grand Secretary reported having received notices of regrets from the Grand High Priests of Maine and Nova Scotia and the First Grand Principal of Ontario. On motion of the Grand Secretary, VOTED to accept the minutes of the 219 th Annual Convocation as printed in the 2016 Proceedings. The Grand Secretary called the roll of the Most Excellent Past Grand High Priests of Connecticut. They assembled west of the Altar where they were personally greeted by MEGHP Ede and then saluted with the Private Grand Honors. Past Grand Custodians were asked to rise. They were saluted for their service by the applause of the Companions. The Grand Secretary called the roll of the Grand Representatives near Connecticut. They were greeted with applause. Companion William Karstens, Most Excellent Grand High Priest of New York brought greetings from the visiting delegations and thanked all for the courtesies extended to them. Companion Clyde W. Kayser II was recognized as the latest recipient of the General Grand Chapter Medal for Distinguished Service, having received it at the Banquet the previous evening. The Grand Secretary called the roll of all other holders of the award. They were all greeted with hearty applause. Holders of the Ephraim Kirby Citation for Meritorious Service who were present were asked to rise and receive the applause of the Companions. This included Companion James S. McNeely who had received the award at the Banquet the previous evening. There are two additional awardees who have yet to receive the Ephraim Kirby Award.

The report of the GHP was received with a rising round of applause. REGS McNeely ordered the address to be referred to the Committee on Address. Companion McCollum reported for the Committee on Address. On his motion, VOTED to accept the report and to adopt the within Resolution. There was no report from the Committee on Audit. The reports of the Grand Treasurer, Grand Trustees and Grand Secretary were presented and each was, on motion, ACCEPTED and ordered to be printed in the Proceedings. Elections Companion John A. Braddock reported for the Committee on Credentials that there were fifty-four voting members registered. Companion William L. Miller presented the report of the Committee on Nominations. There being no further nominations, on motion, VOTED to accept the report, close the nominations and direct the Secretary to cast a single unanimous ballot in favor of the slate. McCollum brought greetings from the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of Connecticut and told a Tale of Two Chapters. Companion Chello reported for the Committee on Royal Arch Research Assistance. On his motion, VOTED to accept the report. Companion James C. Kleinkauf gave the report of the Committee on Bylaws of Constituent Chapters. On his motion, VOTED to accept the report. The Report of the Committee on Educational Assistance was given by Companion James S. McNeely. On motion, VOTED to accept the report and to award the recommended scholarships.

Chello presented the report of the Committee on Jurisprudence. MEGHP Ede asked that all visiting Grand High Priests and First Grand Principals present assemble in the East. He then presented each with a Certificate of Honorary Membership in the Grand Chapter of Connecticut. MEGHP Ede then ordered that all other reports not presented be accepted and printed in the Proceedings. MEGHP elect Ede announced the following appointments: R.E. The newly elected and appointed officers of the Grand Chapter for the 2017-2018 year were installed. After newly installed Most Excellent Grand High Priest Martin Ede was presented with his apron and jewel, he was greeted by the Companions and Ladies with applause. Companion Bruce R. Bellmore presented to MEPGHP Ede a Past Grand High Priest jewel. Most Excellent Grand High Priest Ede delivered a short acceptance address thanking all for their support.

Nelson, Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Connecticut, brought his greetings. The ladies and guests were excused, and the Grand Chapter was Called On to Labor. Installing Officer Chello led the Companions in saluting the new Grand High Priest with the Private Grand Honors. Closing With no further business appearing for the 219 th Anniversary Convocation, and following prayer by MEPGHP Bellmore, the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Connecticut was closed in ample form by Most Excellent Grand High Priest Martin Ede with the assistance of the Grand Officers in their new stations and places. GRAND HIGH PRIEST It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to the 219 th Grand Convocation of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Connecticut. I am honored that you chose to spend time out of your busy schedules here today. It is a pleasure to welcome Brother and Companion Theodore J. Nelson, our Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge AF & AM of Connecticut. It is a pleasure to welcome you here today. We have known each other for a few years through Scottish Rite and I am sure that our friendship will continue as we strengthen Freemasonry in Connecticut. I also welcome Companion Bill Barr, the Grand Representative of the General Grand Chapter of RAM, International to Connecticut and I again urge all chapters to use the resources of the General Grand Chapter to educate our companions, new and old, and to our newly installed Most Puissant Grand Master of the Grand Council of Royal & Select Masters Clyde W. Kayser, II, who I value as a good friend, brother and mentor from my first days in Franklin Chapter and now our newest awardee for the General Grand Chapter Medal in Bronze. With that I would also like to acknowledge ME Companions Bruce R. Bellmore, Charles Fowler, Charles O Neill, Paul Chello and Ex. Companion George A.W. Nousiainen who from those early days have continually been equally good friends and brothers, and to all my brothers and companions throughout the state. To ME Companion Charles A. McCollum, whom I am glad to see here as our Grand Treasurer to pay the bills, I also welcome you as our Right Eminent Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of Connecticut, as well as another good friend and brother even though we are from somewhat opposite sides of the political spectrum which reinforces that Ancient Charge whereby Masonry becomes the Center of Union, and the means of conciliating true friendship among persons that must have remain d at a perpetual distance (Anderson s Constitutions of 1723, p.50). I am a better man and brother for knowing those who but for Freemasonry, I might never have known. To Illustrious Brother and friend Bruce Work, Deputy of Connecticut, it is a pleasure to welcome you as we both work together to strengthen the ties between the York and Scottish Rites. I look forward to being with our Scottish Rite brothers in Rochester this year. And lastly, but certainly by no means least, I want to thank my family for their support and understanding in my Masonic career, though I have fallen somewhat into the role of a lazy, contented bachelor, I am thankful to my Mum, sister and to my late Dad. To my late Dad, whom a few of you met, and who was always somewhat bemused and confused by my passion for Freemasonry, I hope as he

It seemed the right thing to say as he passed from this life to the next, though I understand that the pastor of this rural Congregational Church was a tad bit apprehensive. To my Mum Eileen and sister Helen, whom most of you met last night at the banquet, you will always have my love and thanks as a son and brother. Necrology During the past Capitular year, The Grand Architect of the Universe has seen fit to call home 28 of our companions to that land from whose bourne no traveler returns. Our Grand Chaplain will now offer prayers for our departed companions. Official Acts: Awards It is my pleasure to have nominated Companion Clyde W. Kayser, II for the General Grand Chapter Medal in Bronze, well deserved for a brother who has tirelessly worked in the quarries and who still keeps on taking new responsibilities. It is my pleasure to award the Ephraim Kirby Citation to Companions James S. McNeely, IV, Richard Jones and Doug Barnard. All have shown exemplary work and love for the Royal Arch. A special thank you to Jim who has always been available and willing to help wherever needed. Grand Representatives We received confirmation that our Ex. Companion James Kleinkauf is now our representative to the Grand Chapter of Delaware. We have also received representatives to Connecticut from a number of our sister jurisdictions as noted in the records of our Grand Secretary. Dispensations This year I issued five dispensations, with one pending, mainly for meeting date and place changes. #547 Date of Issue 10/4/16. To Franklin #2 to hold it s December meeting at the North Haven Masonic Temple for the purpose of holding an Annual Holiday Dinner. #549 Date of Issue 1/8/17. To Milford #49 to move their February meeting from Tuesday February 14 th to Tuesday February 21 st to avoid conflict with Valentine s Day. #549 Date of Issue 3/9/17. To Cyrus Meridian #15 to allow them to hold their Annual Meeting at the Log House Restaurant, Rte 44, New Hartford on April 13 th for the purpose of having dinner there, on the understanding that a tyleable room be used for the meeting.

To Joseph Andrews #46 to allow them to move their April 13 th meeting forward to March 30 th to avoid a conflict that some members have with Holy Thursday services. #551 Date of Issue 3/19/17. To Milford #49 to allow their March meeting to be held on March 21 st due to their regular meeting on March 14 th being cancelled due to snow. [#552 Pending to Cyrus Meridian #15 to allow them to change their meeting night until their by-laws can be changed to accommodate newly elected officers schedules waiting for details, not issued as of 5/14/17] Decisions None required for this year, fortunately. Visitations A complete list of my visitations for in and out of state are attached to this report. Despite some restrictions on my ability to travel out of state, I was able to visit Vermont, Massachusetts and Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, as well as the Northeast Regional YR Conference. I hope to be able to make it to the other states in the coming years. I was pleased to welcome now PGHP Companion Russ Lorenson of the Grand Chapter of Rhode Island on his visit to Unity Chapter in Preston, and I hope this type of cross border visits can continue. I am particularly gratified that I was able to play a part in the strengthening of Hiram Chapter #1. I was able to visit them four times this year and help them to re-invigorate their Chapter, and I hope to continue supporting them. I was able to visit all but two of the chapters in state. My apologies go to the Companions of Pulaski #26 and Joseph Andrews #46, as I was unable to make visitations due to sickness and weather. Rest assured I will be visiting you soon. I attended all but one of the Christmas Observances, missing Stratford due to the weather, bringing my, apparently now famous, all-encompassing season s greetings. I was able to attend the Scottish Rites Council of Deliberation and Consistory Day, showing the strength and cooperation that we enjoy in our state. I have enjoyed my travels around the chapters and hope I have gained some insight into the state of the Royal Arch in Connecticut. State of the Rite: As I have traveled around the state, a number of things became clear. We are in somewhat of a transition period as our older members move away or become less able to take part in Chapter activities or pass away. We have depended and still depend on these members for degrees and officers. We have a growing interest in the Royal Arch, but with a fewer number of companions in the middle, if

Page 20 Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Connecticut 2017 you will, linking the old guard with the incoming brothers. We must continue to promote education and understanding of our ritual. There are some Chapters that are doing very well, others that are struggling to open. Some can do all four degrees, some maybe only the MMM and PM. But all companions want their Chapters to succeed and grow, so we must pull together and build on the idea that the Royal Arch is essential to all Master Masons. It also has become clear as I traveled and talked to brothers of different faiths, especially Jewish brothers, that there is still the perception that the Royal Arch is for Christian Masons only, or the idea that they can join Chapter but that they would not be able to complete the York Rite. I have also seen some sectarian prayers used in the opening and closing of Chapters. My companions, this conscious or unconscious way that the Royal Arch Chapter is communicated to our brothers must cease as you know the Chapter is open to all brothers, regardless of their faith and, as I have stated throughout the year, it is the right and necessity of all brother Master Masons to belong to the Chapter, so they can receive the real word and grip. As noted, we are at a period of transition, so what we do over the next few years will be very important to the stabilization and growth of the Royal Arch in Connecticut. Recommendations: That the education seminar be continued each year focusing on the various aspects of our degrees, their philosophy and esoteric connotations so that new companions especially have access to programs that will keep their interest in the Chapter. These can also include memorization techniques for ritual, understanding the language of the degrees and the history of the York Rite to name a few topics. That the Capitular Development Course authored by PGHP of NY Piers Vaughan be unofficially adopted by the Grand Chapter of Connecticut for use in the education of new companions. ME Companion Piers thoroughly enjoyed his time in the state and will be happy to come again. Along with this, the resources and guides from the General Grand Chapter should also be reviewed and used to strengthen all aspects of the Chapter. That a separate line item in the budget be devoted to Chapter Education, so that there is money available for seminars or the purchase of support materials (books, pamphlets etc) each year. It would be up to the members of the Grand Chapter to set the amount, but I would recommend $500-$1,000 if feasible. That the Programs & Publicity Committee be actively encouraged to develop programs and outreach to lodges and Blue Lodge Councils to spread the message of the Royal Arch and by extension the York Rite, and that they actively correct any mis-perceptions that exist in some of our Blue Lodge Brothers.

2017 Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Connecticut Page 21 That neighboring Chapters be actively encouraged to work together with mini-festivals, if you will, so that all degrees can be communicated well to incoming companions. This could include Chapters in neighboring states, such as Rhode Island. Any differences in ritual would be minor and would encourage discussion and education in the Chapters. That the Ritual Committee and the Grand Secretary work together with the Grand High Priest to redo the Secret Work, and to make sure it gets to the Chapter secretaries and High Priests. This could also be done in a tyled seminar. As I have traveled, I have seen a number of errors in the grips given in the MMM and PM degrees as well as, for example, the due-guard and sign of a PM the variants of this seen in a chapter can equal the number of companions present. That there be a discussion on the status of the Past Master degree in the Chapter. I have gone back and forth in my mind as to the place of this in our degrees. The degree as we currently do it in Connecticut is almost exactly the same as the Actual Past Master degree in Blue Lodge. Often in the fourth district, many of the candidates for the APM have already taken the degree in Chapter. Also the confusion aspect can take over the meaning of the degree s focus on the aged King Solomon in lodge. At this time I would recommend keeping the degree (one reason, for example, is that the number 7 has a special symbolism and that keeping seven degrees in Blue Lodge and Chapter culminating in the Royal Arch reinforces that symbolism), but I would also recommend that we consider the use of the General Grand Chapter version of the degree and also review what other variants of the degree are used in other states. I have also come to think that the confusion comes a little too close to a gentle hazing (despite my slightly famous golfing), and the message of the degree could be communicated in a different and better way. That in any future Chapter mergers, objective thought be given to moving to the strongest building/meeting place. By this I mean the one with the most stable finances, better parking & building health (e.g. structural, potential repairs, taxes etc.) and facilities/storage. As we know, there are some temples that Chapters meet in that have no parking, potential financial issues or future major repairs. I m not suggesting that a Chapter should desert its Blue Lodge, but the hopeful future growth of that merged Chapter should be considered in the decision of where the Chapter moves to. That further consideration be given to having the Annual Sessions for all three YR bodies be on the same weekend as is done in other states. This would make travel for our out of state visitors more convenient, and also allow our companions, who are often in all three bodies, just have to get the one day off of work. That the dais officers of all three YR bodies meet to discuss how to revamp the YR Testimonial dinner. Attendance has been falling, but it still has the potential to be a nice get together for not just the Grand

Page 22 Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Connecticut 2017 line officers, but all Chapter officers and the input of the ladies should also be paramount in the discussion. That the idea of setting up a Chapter/Council of Research be considered in the future to work in conjunction with the York Rite College to provide a place non-commandery Companions to meet and discuss the degrees, history, philosophy and esoteric content of the Chapter and Council degrees. This would require further discussion with the Grand Council of Connecticut and the CT York Rite College. Conclusion: Again, I wish to thank the Companions in the state for having the confidence to elect me year after year, and I hope I have lived up to your expectations. A special thank you goes to RE Companion Charles B. Fowler Jr for his help, counsel and patience in keeping me more or less on time with my reports. Also, I wish to thank my family for their support, love and understanding, even when those thorny questions from reading Dan Brown s The Lost Symbol came up As in, so is this what you do at your meetings? Although we are at a turning point in Chapter, it is not one we should be afraid of yes, our numbers may still go down before they stabilize but from what I see, interest in the Chapter degrees is growing. Further outreach to the Blue Lodges will yield not only new but interested and invested members. We in the Chapter offer all brothers the real word and grip of Master Mason. We, along with the Council, offer the completion of the Masonic legend of Hiram Abiff and the building of the two Temples. And as we reach out to all brothers to complete their Masonic education in the Chapter and Council, so more there will be more companions interested in pursuing the Chivalric ideals of the Masonic Knights Templar. In the York Rite, we are three separate and sovereign bodies, but as in the story of the bundle of arrows - our three arrows, though separate and distinct, are stronger and unbreakable together. We need to support each other with Companions of all faiths recommending the Commandery to their Christian brothers and our Sir Knights recommending to their lodge brothers of all faiths of the necessity of the Chapter and Council to their education as Master Masons. Together we can grow as Companions and Sir Knights, as there is strength in diversity. Sawyers. REPORT OF THE GRAND SCRIBE It has, yet again, been a pleasure to serve this Grand Chapter. During the year, I was able to attend ten different Chapters on various occasions, the Grand Chapter Education Seminar, the Northeast regional conference, several out of state Grand Sessions, as well all of the Grand Officer meetings. One thing I did discover during those travels is that we need to improve our communication to our companions and as part of that communication we need to have a Grand Chapter website that is accurate at least with regard to date, time and place. Sadly, I learned this the hard way visiting one of our Chapters. Worse yet, I found out that I was not the only Companion to have this issue when attempting to visit another Chapter. We need to do better for our companions. This past year I had the chance to see high quality degree work in several of our Chapters, but I do feel that there is still opportunity for improvement. One of the opportunities is cooperation between Chapters - never be afraid to ask for help. There are many Companions in our state who are willing to travel to help, aid, and assist other Chapters. One Chapter that did ask for help was Washington Chapter No. 30: during their Royal Arch degree there were companions from three different Chapters to help with the work, and the candidate ended up with a great experience that hopefully he will remember for many years to come. We just need to remember to ask for the help, when needed. As many of you know, I also served this year as High Priest of Pythagoras Chapter No. 17 which limited my ability to attend a couple of Chapters that would benefit from additional support. It is my intent that in the coming months to give more attention to those Chapters. Thankfully, we have a good corps of Grand Officers that want to and are able to work together to help fill in when needed. Once again, I see one common thread with all of our Chapters; that we need to get our new members active, and if we don t it is to our own peril. Which means that we need to give them a reason to come

This is accomplished through education, not only of the candidates/new companions but also our long-term members. McCollum GRAND SECRETARY I am pleased and privileged to offer the ninth report of my second tour of duty as your Grand Secretary. My special thanks to the Secretaries of the Constituent Chapters for their cooperation and prompt response to my requests for information and their assistance. The monthly reporting from the Constituent Chapters continues to improve, and I commend the Secretaries for a job well done, and getting the reports to me in a timely manner. My special thanks to Lady Muff who continues to support me in all my endeavors. My thanks also to Associate Grand Secretary William L. Miller II. During the fiscal year ending 30 April 2017, I received and turned over to the Grand Treasurer the sum of $31,268.74. Most of the Grand Secretaries of other Grand Chapters received the Proceedings via email, as did Grand Chapter Officers, Past Grand High Priests, Constituent Chapter High Priests and Secretaries for whom we had an email address. A few printed copies were prepared and sent to those known not to have computers and to the several libraries who maintain copies. I am delighted to report that all of our 16 Constituent Chapters have submitted their Annual Returns, mostly on time, and I am especially pleased that Hiram 01 appears to be working again. The membership summary which follows shows the previous nine years, plus the current year, for comparison purposes. As you can see, we have had a steady decline over that nine year period, and it is obvious that we continue to lose members. No Chapters showed a net gain; but three: Hiram 01, Franklin 02 and Halleck 44 managed to stay even. Exaltations continue to be low, with large numbers of dimits and NPD. We suffered a net loss of 59, not as bad as the last three years. Of our 1147 members, 15 are dual members, 142 are Fifty Year members or are in the care of Masonicare or other similar institution. Our per capita tax base is now only 990, (a net loss of 54). Overall, it was again not a good year for membership.
