II. God Blesses A Heart That is Broken - Over Sin A. God s Broken Heart Genesis 6 5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And it repented the LORD that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him at His heart. 1. BKC it filled His heart with pain / regretted He made us 2. Jesus wept over the city of Jerusalem 3. grieve not the Holy Spirit of God (Ephesians 4:30) B. Our Broken Heart 1. Jeremiah the prophet (WEEPING PROPHET) / Lamentations My eyes flow with streams of tears because of the destruction of my dear people. 2. A Heart That is Broken Over Sin 1. The Regret of Saul (1 Samuel 15) a) Destroy all the Amalekites: Animals / People / Agag b) Saul s Disobedience 1 Samuel 15 8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. 9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly. c) God s Rebuke 13 And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD. 14 And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear? 15 And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed. 22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king. d) Saul s Response 24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD. (1) Wasn t true repentance change of heart (2) Regret getting caught / avoid consequences e) Sorrow God blesses: (1) Not false sorrow / pretending (2) Brokenness of the heart hate sin / abhor filth (3) Desire forgiveness / cleansing / victory 3
2. The Repentance of David (Psalm 51) a) Israel s greatest king b) Fell into sin: Lust / Adultery / Murder c) 9 Months (baby born) (1) Not - I ve gotten by with it! (2) But - Brokenness Psalm 51 1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest (a) No Excuses (self-justification) (b) Pleading for mercy / cleansing / restoration 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. 13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. d) David desired: (1) Cleansing (2) Restoration (3) Victory 4
