July/August 2013 The Bridge Page 2 Bill and Pat Morrison attended an Ohio wedding Saturday, July 6. But the couple arrived in plenty of time Sunday, July 7, at Carlisle Fairgrounds for Carlisle United Methodist Church's first-ever worship service. "We weren't going to miss this," Mrs. Morrison said. "And we won't miss next Sunday," when the new congregation meets for the first time at its first home at the former Grace campus. The couple drove directly from their overnight hotel to the fairgrounds so they could join the estimated 500 people who turned out. And the Morrisons weren't the only ones who arrived early for the 10:30 a.m. event. At least 100 already had found seats at the fairgrounds grandstand by 10 a.m. to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Bonnie Wiser made sure she didn't miss the service. "I was so excited I could hardly sleep the night before, she said. "I'm so impressed by what we're doing. The church is us -- not the building where we worship... I'm praying we're going to do great stuff" in terms of "more members and helping the people who need help in the community." That was a theme included in the sermon entitled "What Do You See?" delivered by Lead Pastor Jim VanZandt. "Carlisle United Methodist Church may not be able to change the world in the same manner as the Apostles, but it sure can change things in this community," he preached. His sermon came after Associate Pastor Mira Hewlett provided the scripture lesson from Hebrews 11:4-10, which referenced the faith of Abel, Enoch, Noah and Abraham in God's design for the future. CUMC Fairground Worship "Faith is the common denominator," Pastor VanZandt said of those biblical figures. "People confidently looking forward..." The sermon struck a chord with Lisa Myers. "I liked Pastor Jim's message about looking ahead," she said. "Everyone's looking to get to know each other and to build up our church family." "The sermon inspired confidence," Marnie Anderson added. The service also included a short presentation by Associate Pastor Susan Stewart on a program geared toward LAMS -- limited activity members. The unified congregation includes 72 LAMS confined to their homes or nursing homes. They were represented Sunday by small stuffed lambs wearing shirts emblazoned with "Carlisle UMC on the platform that served as the chancel. Pastor Susan explained that volunteers will deliver the lambs to our LAMs and continue to visit and share news and videos of worship services. The service also featured the debut of the Carlisle United Methodist Song written by Kerm Leitner, along with special music from soloist Brad Crum and about 15 students from the inaugural CUMC Vacation Bible School. "I've sung at hundreds of churches but this is the first time for a church-unification service," said Crum, best known in the secular world for his Elvis tribute shows. He sang "Where No One Stands Alone" and "How Great Thou Art." The VBS children sang "Go Serve Our World" and "The Most Important Thing" in an energetic performance that included clapping, dancing, stomping, shouting and even some "air guitar." The 412 worshipers who stayed after the service were served a catered picnic that boasted fried chicken, potato wedges, macaroni salad, lettuce salad and cake. More than 50 children then adjourned to a play area that featured a "bouncy house," a parachute game, face-painting and more. One of the most popular activities was a relay game involving buckets of water and sponges that left the children gloriously soggy -- a welcome condition in the near 90-degree heat. "That was a great idea to have things for the kids," Chuck Anderson said. Wife Marnie Anderson agreed, adding: "It helps them feel involved with the beginning of this church." Gary Heishman also liked the venue. "This was a good place to have our first service," he said. "It was well organized and everyone was very friendly. I heard no negatives." Mimi and Bob Goodling certainly were positive about the festivities. "We have been members of both Allison and Grace and we are SO happy to see everyone together in the grandstand and at the picnic," they wrote in an e-mail. "It felt like the Lord was with us, because it didn't matter if you had previously been a member of Allison, First or Grace, everyone was talking about the future of the NEW Carlisle Church." Pastor Mira also was impressed. "Two years ago we were... separate people in separate churches," she said. "We introduced ourselves as from 'my church' and sat with only those we knew. As I saw the grandstand fill for worship and watched the tables crowded with people, our church has a fresh name, lots of new relationships and a renewed vision for God's work in Carlisle." Members of the new congregation are a little uncertain, but they re excited, Lucy Brown added. It will all come together. It s a great new beginning.

July/August 2013 The Bridge Page 3 Welcome to Carlisle UMC! As I have shared with friends and family all that s going on at church they often ask: What s so new about this new church? Here s my top 10 list of things new about CUMC: 1. Logo and Tagline Follow God. Build Community. We are a community of faith focused on God and building bridges to our community. It s really simple. You see four people in our logo. The Leadership Council was deliberate in not using three (showing our former churches) but including more than who were previously including a fourth person to remind us we always should be including those who are beyond our church walls. 2. Three Worship Styles Sunday morning with traditional worship, relaxed traditional worship and contemporary worship. Try them all. Mix it up. Worship God in many styles. 3. Two Sunday School Hours Traditional Sunday School at 10 a.m. and life group and small groups studies at 11:15 a.m. for children, youth and adults. 4. Grow (Christian Education) Leadership The pastors will lead the area of Grow for young adults and adults. Our pastors and gifted laity will teach classes and participate in Life Groups regularly. 5. Life Groups Groups of 6-12 people will gather together around a topic or study to grow in their relationship with Christ and in community with each other. Groups last 6 weeks 3 months and require a covenant to participate and hold each other accountable. 6. Connect We will stay connected with our LAMs (limited activity members), include new ways to connect with each other, and work to build relational bridges to those in our community through small groups, prayer teams, and exercise classes. 7. How We Serve We will serve outside the church walls to build bridges to our community through mission (giving funds), service (working beside our neighbors), and outreach (inviting our community to know God). 8. Serving with Spiritual Gifts Classes that identify our spiritual gifts, and then serving in and beyond the church with our gifts. 9. Leadership Structure The Leadership Council streamlines the committees and meetings to enable us to move fluidly and cohesively as a new church. We favor doing ministry over sitting in meetings talking about doing ministry. 10. New Staff Positions CUMC has added the positions of Media, IT, and Communications to our staff because today 80% of our community will learn about CUMC online or through social media before even visiting worship. You ll find service and Sunday School times, SERVE opportunities, the most current calendar information, and a lot more. You can even attend worship while you re away by logging on and watching one of the services or some other videos about things going on in your church. If these instructions are over your head, ask a teenager to do it for you. (I had to once.) And a heads up. Look for information on e-mail blasts next month. Photo Directory Information If you haven t gotten the CUMC photo directory, do we have a deal for you! Come to the church office during operating hours, fill out a 3x5 card and collect a directory. If you want to pick up one for a member who can t get to the church (a LAM, for instance), you may do that also. If your photo did not make it in the directory, or your member data is incorrect, and you haven t already told an office staff member, please let us know. The directory team is working on an addendum to fix the errors. Due date for all changes is July 31, so we can prepare and distribute the change.

Joanne Monoski, Hospitality & Special Events Coordinator Retired elementary school teacher, Joanne loves making people feel welcome and is excited to work with and form relationships with the many volunteers active in this ministry. Erin Fleet, Youth Ministries Director A die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan and a graduate of Houghton University, Erin loves watching God work in students lives as they transform into young adults. Erin spends most of her free time playing with her two dogs, Tobie and Mia. New Contemporary Worship Service Matthew 18:3 - And he said: Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus asks us to have a childlike faith, worshipping with gladness and joy, sitting at his feet learning in wonder and awe, running to him as our strength and protector in times of trouble. Our new contemporary worship service is a family friendly worship combining some familiar aspects of contemporary worship, such as praise and worship songs led by our praise band, and special moments that involve both children and adults in worship. Some of the differences include a children's sermon followed by a theme-oriented activity for the children as the adults hear reflections of God's word; a prayer wall in the worship space where children and adults can post sticky notes of prayer requests to be prayed over during the service; and a new look and feel in our multipurpose room (MPR). Including children in worship helps us as adults experience Jesus through a child s eyes. It also helps us to recognize what we are teaching our young people, and what example we set in our worship and in our lives. As we learn how to make the Gospel come alive for children in the context of worship, we make it accessible for the unchurched as well. We can be more intentional in discipling our children and our seekers in worship, and they in turn will teach us to look at the world, ourselves, and our God with new eyes. ~Pastor Susan Carlisle Church UMW Work Team to Mission Central Can t get to New Jersey? Enjoy the fellowship of working with the Carlisle United Methodist Women at Mission Central every third Wednesday morning of each month throughout the year. Our July and August workdays are Wednesday, July 17 and August 21. We carpool from the CUMC parking lot by 8:30 a.m. and work at various light duty chores till noon. Afterwards we dine at the West Main Diner in Mechanicsburg, returning to Carlisle before 2:00 p.m. And men are also welcome! July/August 2013 The Bridge Page 6 Welcome Back Musicians Party All musicians, please mark your calendar for Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at 6:00 p.m. We re having a Welcome Back Musicians Party in the Carlisle UMC Multi-purpose Room. This is a great chance for all musicians, vocalists and instrumentalists, of the various adult musical groups, to get better acquainted by an evening of good food and fellowship, and to find out just what s happening with the two Sanctuary services music program. Hospitality/Events Coordinator, Joanne (Jody) Monoski, and her team, are in charge of the meal with musicians bringing various other pre-assigned culinary items. Connie Leitner, Choral Director & Organist designed the program, and it involves well over one hundred participants. She says, This is a unique opportunity to have all of us come together and experience a once-in-a-lifetime gathering of individuals who love to make music for our Lord and our new church. Music for Summer Worship Services The choirs are taking a break for the summer and will resume rehearsals on Wednesday and Thursday, August 28th and 29th, respectively, at 7:15 8:30 p.m. in the choir room, Room 7c. The new season begins September 8th. Anyone who loves to sing and is willing to commit to the level of involvement an adult choir requires, is most welcome. These new choirs are intergenerational; persons from grade nine and forward are encouraged to participate. Staff and Leadership Council Choir August 18, 2013 Rethink Church An Invitation to Join the Sunbeams, a Young Children s Choir The Sunbeams, formerly known as the Cherubs or the Young Children s Choir, will resume rehearsals on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, in the choir room (7C) located on the lower level (LL) of CUMC. Children, ages 4 through 2nd grade, are invited to sing in what is usually a child s first organized group singing venture. Children even a little younger are welcome if they show great interest in singing and a family member remains at the rehearsal. All accompanying parents or grandparents are welcome to stay for the rehearsal as well since it usually reassures the young singer if Mommy or Daddy is there. Practices begin promptly at 6 p.m. and includes a welcome, a prayer, musical instruction and story time. The practice ends at 6:25 p.m. The Sunbeams will sing at all three services throughout the church year and the Christmas Eve Family service. There will be a very special Mother s Day Song Medley at the 10 a.m. service in which the young singers will get to sing solos from the previous repertoire they ve sung throughout the year. We will end the choir year with a special treat at the Dairy Queen the Wednesday following Mother s Day on May 14, 2014. July/August 2013 The Bridge Page 8 New Jersey Clean-Up A life-changing experience? Yeah, Really! A mission trip can be life changing! Within a relatively short period of time, your own life and a stranger s life can be powerfully changed. This year s Youth Mission Trip was an amazing experience! We all learned a ton, got to know each other better, did a lot of work, and treated each other with love and kindness. Did I mention we worked a lot? It was very busy. Fourteen youth and four adults participated in the trip to Lakewood, NJ from Sunday, June 9th till Saturday June 15th. Youth and adult leaders were a part of Sandy Clean Up in the Union Beaches area of NJ. We did yard clean up, installed insulation, hung drywall, and ma other rebuilding tasks. After serving during the day, everyone participated in Bible study, small group discussions, worship, fellowship, and games. Youth and adult mission leaders stayed at Georgian Court University in the dorms. Our nightly worship time was in a nearby United Methodist Church. Saturday was our fun day we went to the BEACH! We enjoyed the final day of each other s company as we debriefed about the trip and all that God had done in our lives during the past week. We were all tired and ready to sleep in our own beds. This was an amazing trip, lives were changed, homes were restored and it was made possible by your support both financial and spiritual. I am deeply grateful for the dedication and energy of these, your youth, just I am deeply grateful for all of you who made this trip possible. Thank you for supporting God s dream for the lives of these wonderful youth. Upward Program Help Tiny Seeds Grow into Faithful Service Every time I think about the Upward Ministries program, it reminds me of Jesus Parable of the Mustard Seed. The mustard seed is the smallest of garden seeds planted. Yet through the miracle of God's growth, it becomes the largest of all shrubs. The mustard seeds of faith planted in the lives of children, Kindergarten through 8th grade, through Upward Ministries are like that. While gathered to share their passion for a sport or cheerleading, the children receive the opportunities and tools to grow their seeds of faith through mentoring and devotions. Carlisle Church is preparing another field this fall for planting and growing such seeds of faith as we approach Upward Flag Football season. Please prayerfully consider serving as a coach, referee, providing devotions, helping in the concession stand, or being a prayer partner for one of our cheerleaders or athletes. You are our greatest resource in helping the mustard seeds of faith grow in these children. And they are our greatest resource in bringing Christ to their generation. July/August 2013 The Bridge Page 9 CUMC Leadership Council Official Actions May 28, 2013 Action: Following a motion from Ron Chipriano and a second from Kerm Leitner, the Leadership Council approved the child care recommendation to establish the Carlisle United Methodist Child Care with preschool and daycare programs. It will be operated by a joint advisory board, serve as a ministry of CUMC and budget separately only to the extent required by the Thelma McCollough endowment. Following a motion by Jeff Barnes and a second by Bill Bunt, the Leadership Council approved the legal document governing endowments, trusts, general bequests and memorial and honor gifts. Following a motion by Kathy Charette and a second by Bill Bunt, the Leadership Council approved the name of Carlisle United Methodist Legacy Funds for this program. June 10, 2013 Following a motion by Bill Bunt and a second by Ron Chipriano, the Leadership Council authorized the hiring of CUMC college students to paint all of the offices in need of fresh paint at a rate established by Jeff Barnes or his designee. Following a motion by Ron Chipriano and a second by Bill Yufer, the Leadership Council authorized Bill Yufer to open all of the necessary accounts for Carlisle United Methodist Church. Following a recommendation from Jeff Barnes (who was on vacation) through Pastor Mira, the Leadership Council approved the hiring of Kathy Baird to work 4 to 5 hours/week at First mowing grass and doing other outside work and conducting building walk-throughs until the building has been sold. May 23, May 28 and June 10, 2013 Following recommendations at each of these meetings by Bill Bunt, Chair of Personnel, the Leadership Council approved the hiring and salaries of the new staff. June 28, 2013 Following a motion by Ron Chipriano and a second by Gary Ankabrandt, Kathy Charette was elected vice-chair of the Leadership Council. Following a motion by Bill Bunt and a second by Kerm Leitner, the Leadership Council approved the Leadership Council Resolution (a legal document prepared in order for our new church to become incorporated.) Following a motion by Bill Bunt and a second by Gary Ankabrandt, the Leadership Council approved Exhibit A to Articles of Amendment Domestic Nonprofit Corporation and the PA Department of State s Articles/ Certificate of Merger (additional legal Help Carlisle Church SERVE documents necessary for our becoming Carlisle United Methodist Church.) Following a motion by Bill Bunt and a second by Gary Ankabrandt, the Leadership Council approved the Carlisle United Methodist Church s Personnel Policy Manual. Following a motion by Gary Ankabrandt and a second by Ron Chipriano, the Leadership Council approved the Pension Agreement for the newly hired staff. Following a motion by Bill Bunt and a second by Jeff Barnes, the Leadership Council authorized Gary Ankabrandt and Pastor Mira to meet with legal counsel, Ivo Otto, and report back to the Leadership Council with recommendations to form a separate but connected legal entity for CUMC s Child Care Programs, currently called GLO and Little Angels. Following a recommendation from Gary Ankabrandt, the Leadership Council approved the Safe Sanctuaries Policy (with acknowledgement that this policy will be revisited in a timely fashion. It is an excellent start and will serve us well as we open our doors on July 1, 2013.) Meeting Dates for July: July 8 and 22 at 5 p.m. Carlisle Church is always on the lookout for folks wanting to use the several talents God gives them, and some they haven t tried out yet. If you look on the website, www.carlislepaumc.org, you can find a sort of church want ads and whom to contact. We re looking for ushers, acolytes, welcome hosts, office volunteers, and lots more. This is a great way to meet other family members and to keep our church active and responsive to our mission.

July/August 2013 The Bridge Page 11 VBS Recap The children of CUMC had a blast at Vacation Bible School 2013! Around 90 kids came to camp, with many guests and friends. Every evening they arrived at God s Backyard Bible Camp where they learned all about serving their family, their friends, their neighbors, their community and Jesus! They had a great time in God s Backyard. It was amazing to see them grow in their relationship with Jesus! They had fun learning all about God s love through Bible stories, crafts, games, music, and even snacks! The children did a wonderful job SERVING others during VBS. They watched a puppet show depicting the conditions that the children in Haiti have to live in every day. To help the children in Haiti, they collected summer clothing and shoes which will be delivered to them during a mission trip at the end of August. At VBS, children decorated pillowcases to be delivered to local shelters for children to use. The children did an AWESOME job decorating the pillowcases with bright colors and words telling of the love of Jesus Christ. They also made popcorn owls that they delivered to friends and neighbors. They all did a great job SERVING neighbors and their community! Music was a favorite of all of the VBS children! The children had an awesome time serving Jesus through song. They worked hard learning new songs and motions. They are excited to share them at our upcoming Fairgrounds worship service on July 7th. CUMC Hosting Community & Service Groups Seven Days a Week As our three churches come together as one, the process of building bridges in our community is already well underway. As detailed below, CUMC is hosting 16 (& counting!) external support, study, service and community groups. This also gives us an awesome opportunity to represent Christ s love as we meet the needs of our neighborhood and welcome these folks into our facility. In creating Carlisle Church, it is exciting to learn that ALL of the groups previously hosted by our former Allison, First and Grace campuses chose to continue meeting in our transitional facility. I ve had the opportunity to meet many of the group leaders, and to help them get acclimated to our building. I can report that they are universally pleased and very grateful to continue with us and to use our facilities. Some of these groups meet during the day, others in the evening, and the remainder on weekends, making our church a true 7-days-a-week building that is heavily used by both church and community organizations. I believe God is smiling when He sees the doors open and lights on at CUMC throughout the week! But there is a challenge for us: that is to convert this opportunity of having so many inside our doors to helping them become followers of Christ. Please be thinking of how you could reach out in this way to one or more of the groups listed below. Dessert and drinks will be provided. All meetings occur in the Gathering. Wednesday, July 24 Pastor Jim s Cars We all know Pastor Jim loves his muscle cars. He has even refurbished two himself. Come to hear his stories, see pictures of his work, and (given nice weather) meet his Cougar in the parking lot! Wednesday, August 21 Youth Mission Trip Stories In June our youth traveled to New Jersey to help with continued recovery efforts. Hear their stories and meet some remarkable young people from CUMC. CUMC Year Round Office Hours Carlisle UMC office hours are Monday Friday 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. (I would say normal office hours, but if you ve ever worked in a church office, you ll know it can be anything but normal at times.) Joanna and her cadre of office volunteers are ready to help you. The office will close on certain holidays. Look for that information in the worship folder, the website, or the upcoming newsletters. Since a few families a week come with their small children, we like to provide limited child care from 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., because it s hard to interview adults when their kids have to be with them at the interview. Carlisle Church provides a room where the kids can stay with their parents, and some toys, games and worksheets to entertain them. If you are 18 or older and are, or can become qualified under Safe Sanctuaries, and want an experience that can change your understanding of what it s like to help children of families in need, come join our child care team. Thanks to George Myers, Charlie Lebo, Larry Miller and John Roller, Carlisle Church has mailboxes for all members. You ll find them in the Gathering, and if you get this newsletter, you ve already found your name on one of the mailboxes. They will be the main way Carlisle Church will get paper communications into your hands. The website and e-mail blasts are the other main ways to get information to you. This will help save CUMC several hundred dollars annually in postage charges that we can put to real missions. For Contemporary Service worshipers, your mailboxes are just outside the Multipurpose Room (MPR) on the second floor. God s Little Ones First Golf Tournament God s Little Ones Preschool at Carlisle United Methodist Church is sponsoring its first golf tournament on Friday, September 13, 2013, at the Eagles Crossing Golf Club. A full ministry of our new church and part of the child care program along with the Little Angels Daycare Program, GLO uses fundraisers to keep tuition as low as possible. A variety of sponsorships are available starting at $50 and going as high as $1000. The cost for a single golfer to compete is $85 which includes dinner featuring a 14 oz. NY strip steak. Don t play golf and just want to come to dinner? Dinner only will cost $25. On vacation or out of town that day? All contributions will be gratefully accepted in your absence.
