n a tally new direction cannot do anything Questioner: have been listening you for fifty years. You have said one has die every moment. This is more real me now than it has ever been. Krishnamurti: Must you listen speaker for fifty years at end it you underst what he says? Does it take time? Or do you see beauty something instantly refore it is? Now why do you ors take time over all this? Why must you have many years underst a very simple thing? And it is very simple, assure you. t becomes complex only in explanation, but fact is extraordinarily simple. Why doesn t one see simplicity truth beauty it instantly n whole phenomenon life changes? Why? s it we are so heavily conditioned? And if you are so heavily conditioned, can t you see conditioning instantly, or must you peel it f like an onion, layer after layer? s it one is lazy, indolent, indifferent, caught in one s own problem? f you are caught in one problem, problem is not separate rest problems; y are all interrelated. f you take one problem, wher it is sex, relationship, or loneliness, whatever it is, go very end it. But you can t do it, you have listen somebody for fifty years! Are you going say it takes you fifty years look at those mountains? Are you aware during day every movement thought? Be honest, be simple: you are not. You are aware in patches. am aware for two minutes, n re is a great blank n again a few minutes, or half an hour later, realize have forgotten myself pick it up again. There are gaps in our awareness: we are never aware continuously, we think we ought be aware all time. Now, first all, re are great spaces between awareness, aren t re? There is awareness, n unawareness, n awareness so on, during day. Which is important? To be continuously aware? Or be aware for short periods? What is one do with long periods when one is not aware? Amongst those three, what do you think is important? know what is important for me. am not bored about being aware for a short period, or wanting have awareness continuously. am concerned only with when am not aware, when am inattentive. say am very interested in why am inattentive, what am do about inattention, unawareness. That is my problem not have constant awareness. You would go crazy unless you had really gone in this very, very deeply. So my concern is: why am inattentive what happens in period inattention? know what happens when am aware. When am aware, nothing happens. am alive, moving, living, vital; in nothing can happen re is no choice for something happen. Now, when am inattentive, not aware, n things happen. Then say things which are not true, n am nervous, anxious, caught, fall back in my despair. So why does this happen? s what you are doing? Or, are you concerned with being tally 2 aware trying, practising be aware all time? see am not aware, am going watch what happens in state when am not aware. To be aware am not aware is awareness. When old brain sees it can never underst what freedom is, when it sees it is incapable discovering something new, very perception is seed intelligence, isn t it? That is intelligence: cannot do. thought could do a lot things, can, in a certain direction, but in a tally new direction cannot do anything. The discovery is intelligence, obviously. Now, what is relationship intelligence or? s or part this extraordinary sense intelligence? want find out what we mean by word intelligence. The mind must not be caught by words. Obviously old brain, all se centuries, thought it could have its God, its freedom, it could do everything it wanted. And suddenly it discovers any movement old brain is still part old; refore intelligence is understing it can function only within field known. The discovery is intelligence, we say. Now, what is intelligence? What is its relationship life, a dimension which old brain does not know? You see, intelligence is not personal, is not outcome argument, belief, opinion or reason. ntelligence comes in

n a tally new direction cannot do anything being when brain discovers its fallibility, when it discovers what it is capable, what not. Now, what is relationship intelligence with this new dimension? The different dimension can operate only through intelligence; if re is not intelligence it cannot operate. So in daily life it can operate only where intelligence is functioning. ntelligence cannot function when old brain is active, when re is any form belief adherence any particular fragment brain. All is lack intelligence. The man who believes in God, man who says, There is only one saviour, is not intelligent. The man who says, belong this group, is not intelligent. When one discovers limitation old, very discovery is intelligence, only when intelligence is functioning can new dimension operate through it. What is relationship romness, chance, something tally new? There are events in one s life appear happen by chance, events occur at rom. s happening new, tally unexpected? Or is it result unexamined, hidden, unconscious events? happen meet you by chance. s chance at all, or has it happened certain unconscious, unknown, events have brought us ger? We may consider this chance, but it is not chance at all. meet you, did not know you existed, in meeting something has taken place between us. That may be result a great many or events which we are not conscious, we may n say, This is a rom event, this is an unexpected chance, this is tally new. t may not be. s re chance in life at all, a happening which has not a cause? Or have all events in life ir basic, deep, causes, which we may not know refore we say, Our meeting happens by chance, it is a rom event? The cause undergoes a change when re is an effect. The effect becomes a cause. There is cause effect which becomes cause next effect. So cause-effect is a constant chain. t is not one cause, one effect; it is undergoing constant change. Each cause, each effect, changes next cause, next effect. So as this is going on in life, is re anything which is unexpected, chance, a rom event? Krishnamurti: f you observe, if you say, listen noise, listen completely, not with resistance, n noise may go on forever, it does not affect you. The moment you resist, you are separate noise. Not identify yourself with noise don t know if you see difference. The noise goes on; can cut myself f it by resisting it, putting a wall between myself noise. Then what takes place, when resist something? There is conflict, isn t re? Now, can listen noise without any resistance whatsoever? Q: Yes, if you know noise might sp in an hour! K: No, is still part your resistance. Q: That means can listen noise in street for rest my life with possibility might become deaf. K: No, listen, madam, am saying something entirely different. We are saying as long as re is resistance, re must be conflict. Wher resist my wife, or my husb, wher resist noise a dog barking, or noise in street, re must be conflict. Now, how is one listen noise without conflict not wher it will go on indefinitely, or hoping it will come an end but how listen noise without any conflict? That is what we are talking about. You can listen noise when mind is completely free any form resistance not only noise, but everything in life your husb, your wife, your children, politician. Therefore what takes place? Your listening becomes much more acute, you become much more sensitive, refore noise is only a part, it isn t whole world. The very act listening is more important than noise, so listening becomes important thing not noise. Questioner: You ten talk about beauty mountains stillness mind when looking at beauty a cloud. Can mind be still when looking at something horrible? K: Just listen carefully, observe dark light, slum non-slum. Can you watch? Can re be an awareness in which se divisions don t exist? s re an awareness in which division between poverty riches does not exist? Not fact re is not division, with all its injustice, immorality, all, but an awareness in which 3

n a tally new direction cannot do anything this division doesn t exist? That is, can mind observe beauty hill squalor, not prefer, or incline one, opposed or? That means an awareness in which choice doesn t exist. You can do this. Not poverty should go on you would do something, politically, socially, so on. But mind could be freed division, this classical division between rich poor, between beauty ugliness, opposites, all rest it. Krishnamurti: As a human being would be concerned only What are You Doing with Your Life?: Krishnamurti s investigation questions concern life a young person day constitutes a most original auntic contribution educational thought twentieth century. n talking students holding discussions with m in different parts world, what he sought impart was not a philosophy life but rar art observing directly one s life. That is perhaps why religious people, instead using word intelligence, have used word God. Bohm: What is advantage? K: don t know what advantage is. B: But why use such a word?
