Hebrews 12: 12 Standg back of darkened church at end of All Sats Day, a mixture of emotions rose me. n front of nave, glowg like small pyres before altar, were two pans of beeswax candles, ignited by community that night. Each candle stood for a life remembered, a life held by us agast that darkness which would swallow everythg, if we allow it; a darkness that would annihilate love and laughter, goodness and grace that we have known through our communion with those who have died. We gared at altar of Christ, place where memory becomes sacrament, and we remembered not ust Christ but ors, as well great cloud of witnesses whose presence moves us, and whose absence makes us weep. We gared as Church: i.e., a community of hope and desire, a community of believers, who trust promise of resurrection but still feel wounds born of our separation. More and more, have come to fd a special holess month of November last month of liturgical year, when Church recalls sterious communion of dead with livg. suppose this comes, part, from growg older. So many of those love have entered stery of death, so that beg called to remember ir lives seems a special grace. Too often go barrelg along through day, only to encounter, some sudden and unexpected way, a trigger a song, a photograph, a certa shade trees, or look night sky and n all sorrow of loss and anguish of separation rush over me. But this month, when am called tentionally, with whole community of faith, to remembrance, when am vited to pray for mor and far, sister and beloved friends, that sense of loss though still real becomes, as well, a communion with all those who mourn, with all who wait, as do, on this side of stery, longg for reunion that we are promised someday come. However, holess of November is not ust solidarity it stills among mourners, nor is it ust way this month calls us to reflect on those who have died. n rememberg our communion with dead, feelg power
of ir life movg our own, we are also given a vision, a foretaste, of what reign of God means, what it promises, and how it is fulfilled. The great cloud of witnesses spoken of Letter to Hebrews, and multitude imaged triumph of Lamb Revelation are not ust metaphors, but remders to Church i.e., to all of us that reign of God is communion of all with all. The body of Christ, its fullness, is union of all all, of our hearts and mds, our bodies and our lives. Whatever is less than that, whatever is division or fracture, is not yet God, not yet fullness of Kgdom which Christ has begun through his ncarnation and Resurrection. n Holy Spirit that personal expression of dynamic and livg communion of Holy Trity, who is poured out upon us both Creation of world and redemptive moment of Pentecost we have already begun to live communion with God and with each or. Through this Spirit, we eat body and drk blood of One who is unitg us and with Trity, and who becomes our body and our blood body and blood shared by each of us. This communion is our salvation, now, and, fullness of time, unite us to all thgs as Christ is united to all thgs and we are united to Christ. n such a vision, reign of God is not about each of us livg on his own little cloud playg a private harp, it is not a place of dividual riches and comfort. t is beg as God is: i.e., constant and complete communion of love with all creation, with all that is, and was, and ever shall be. f this is nature of God s salvation, promised to us Feast of All Sats, prayers of All Souls, and remembrances of this month, n we can also consider what s is, and what it is that keeps us from fullness of our humanity. For if God s call and fulfillment of Christ s mission entails us becomg like God i.e., like Blessed Trity, distct person but united love than all that keeps us from this realization is s: all selfishness, all divisiveness, all ways which we keep ors from comg to us or keep ourselves from gog out to ors. We are made to overcome darkness not as separate candles our own little nooks, but as a great fire where every life is recognized and each candle gives itself for light of all. And neir time nor space, neir social standg nor immigration status, neir gender nor orientation, neir race nor creed, neir life nor death can separate us great communion of our God. This is what we celebrate prayers of November: not a past that is irretrievably dead, but dead who are yet alive and be restored to us, first as memories, n fullness that we all await, i.e., communion for which whole of creation longs and gift of Christ has been given. t is not always easy to believe communion anticipated by our November prayers, not easy to discern way to unity for which our hearts pe. The forces of division and separation are strong and shadows of fear and preudice, of ego and anger sometimes seem impenetrable. Wher Syria or South Sudan, Yemen or at Standg Rock, our political systems or even our beloved Church, we can lose sight of communion of Christ to which we are called replacg great cloud of witnesses with our own ideologies and biases. Like snake Garden, world can whisper to us that full communion is impossible, that we must take what we want and preserve ourselves at expense of ors. And, as Garden, result of believg such whispers is that death which is exile, that sufferg which is separation, that s which only mercy of God, blood of Christ Jesus, can overcome. May we as a community, as a people, as a Church wash ourselves blood of Christ, and so become cleansed of fear and division. May we stand at altar of God men and women toger, no longer separated by old ideas and by fear that divides. May we know our communion with each woman and man, our communion with all humanity, with all creation, with all livg and dead. Faith Formation Sponsors Needed For RCA We are need of 710 adults who can be a faith companion to someone gog through RCA process to o Catholic Faith. The St. Joseph Parish community promises prayerful support for, and to walk with, each prospective new member of Catholic Church. The role of RCA sponsor is fulfillment of that promise. As a sponsor you are assigned a candidate (baptized adult) or Catechumen (unbaptized adult) whose contug faith ourney you share. Beg a Sponsor is like beg a trusted friend. You share what you can about your own faith ourney. You offer counsel and support as you are able and to extent that it is needed or desired. You serve as a bridge to larger St. Joseph community. You listen and you pray. Each relationship between a Sponsor and a Candidate or Catechumen is unique. As a Sponsor, you walk with a Candidate or Catechumen through a formation process that culmates with itiation to Catholic Church. Many prospective Sponsors ask mselves wher y are worthy or qualified. The role of Sponsor is not that of Catechist. You are not expected to know every aspect of Church s teachg, but rar simply to be a guide, an example of a Catholic livg your faith as best as you can. A Sponsor who can admit his or her limitations and who contually tries to grow is an excellent faith model. Monthly Taize Prayer Service Formed French town of same name 1940, Taizé prayer blossomed from a prayer community tended to create a place of peace and refuge wartorn France. Taizé prayer consists of a series of repetitive melodies and chants terspersed with reflection and a period of contemplative silence.
