I rejoice with you in thanksgiving for the awesome Conven on and Consecra on as the Cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of Nevada. As we move into this me of year with a mind and heart of giving thanks, I share a few thought with you. First, a special Thank you. I personally cannot thank you enough, all those of you as members who stepped forth to contribute your gi s to make this the memorable and historic event that it came to be. I am so proud of you all and our ministry together, and I am most grateful to be your spiritual shepherd as dean and rector. Bishop Dan sent a note that I share with you: Dear People of Trinity, My hear elt thanks to all of you who worked so hard and so well for our Conven on. You were, as always, a class act recep on, concert, Consecra on Eucharist, and all! You have blessed our Diocese with gracious hospitality. Second, on Sunday, November 5 th (and Saturday, Nov. 4 th ) we will with our weekend liturgies observe the Feast of All Saint s. This special me of giving thanks for the saints that have gone before us, will include special prayers in the midst of the Eucharist Prayer for all who have passed into the nearer presence of God in the past year since our last November s All Saints Celebra on of 2016. This is our special me to look to the past with gratefulness for those who have touched our lives in very special ways. We offer our thanksgiving to God for our faith and lives that have been molded by these persons. Third, a very special way we model thanksgiving C. 2... In early September you received the invitation for our 2018 Annual Pledge Program: Building from the Foundation. The kick-off was with our Pot- Luck of Sunday, September 10 th, where we shared the three major goals established by Vestry for the coming year: (1) Expanding our outreach programs; (2) developing a shepherding program to integrate members and new members; and (3) the interior renovation program. The all-member mailing included the Pledge Card with a mini version of the budget, a proportional Giving Chart, and a letter from the Dean and Rector, Father William. All of this is to assist you with your prayerful decision for a financial commitment. If you did not receive your packet in the mail, there are forms in the pews, or at the entrance tables (do not use the web site to make your pledge gift; the web site is being reconstructed and is not functional for this task). There will be a special recognition of our Pledged Giving at all of the services with a Blessing of Our Pledges on the weekend of November 25-26 (Thanksgiving weekend). Thanksgiving Dinner 2017 Thursday, November 23 rd JOIN us for Thanksgiving Dinner (12:00 Noon) following our Morning Worship on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23 at 10:30 AM. We will gather in the Parish Hall. We will supply the roast turkey, filling, and mash potatoes. We invite all guests to sign up on the sheet at the back of the church, and ask that you sponsor a food item in one of the categories: a side dish, dessert, or rolls. Our discussion will center on being a People Pleaser. Peer Pressure in Middle and High School can be tough for kids. Together we ll explore what such pressure is like for our kids and ways they might respond.we ll discuss the provoca ve ques on, How important is honesty nowadays? We will also be deciding on our Christmas Party! We will have a Holy Spirit potluck when we meet on the 19 th (Bring what you d like and a bit to share)! We meet on the 1 st and 3 rd Sundays of each month, from 12:30 2:00 PM, in the lower level of the church, for community, snacks, and growth. All youth in 6 th 12 th grade are invited to join us!
P AGE 4 RENOVATION Proposals Capital Campaign The Stewardship of Re Purposing: Chancel Renova on When involved with interior renova ons of worship space, the church can prac ce wise and essen al stewardship when it comes to making changes that serve worship ministry and other programs more effec vely. The win win approach here is to u lize exis ng and significant pieces incorporated into the space in a new way. The win win is that design elements are preserved in the space, maintain the historic features of the overall design, and become more func onal in serving the space usage (this is an example where form serves func on). In addressing the main concern of safety and a wiser u liza on of the chancel to accommodate the demands of our present worship, opening up and leveling the chancel down to three levels (rather than nine) involves a significant amount of moving and repurposing to achieve a safe, open, flexible, and visually unobstructed space, as well as one that supports our worship func on and theology. Some of the proposed ideas as we have worked with contractors and specialists are: The Liturgical East Wall (the south wall we face for worship). Because of the dropping of the floor, the lower area of this wall will need addi onal square wood paneling to complete its look. The exis ng shelf (reredos) will be lowered to con nue to accommodate the office candles and flowers. However, the proposal is that the shelf and lower area become a columbarium for bishops, deans, and clergy. The wood of the present choir screens will be the wood u lized to accomplish this. The Side Walls of the southern por on of the Chancel (up to the side door openings) where the changing banner hang, will receive the same wood, paneled treatment as is presently on the south wall. This will create a warm, more wrap around sense with the chancel design. The Christ Rex Cross will be cleaned of the wax build up and re surfaced. The mahogany por on, the actual cross, will be cleaned, re stained, and real gold leafing applied. The corpus will be cleaned and brightened with color where needed. The cross will be suspended in the first arch out from the south wall so that it is in greater rela onship to the altar table. Special ligh ng will be installed to give it greater significance and presence in the space. The Steps will run the width of the chancel. The appropriate propor on of rise and run will be u lized. For safety, and to be even safer visually, the steps will consist of a le surface on top and the rise and a bullnose will be oak wood to match furnishings. This will helpful with the Christmas Eve pageant and when we host diocesan or district choral events. The Credence Table will be built into the wall of the right side u lizing the wood of the exis ng altar. The tomb altar remains unfinished from when it was removed over a decade ago from the wall, and is plain and obtuse. The exis ng lectern will be incorporated into a wall bracket to enthrone the Gospel Book. With this clustering on the west wall, the Tabernacle in the Bishop Lewis chapel will be added so we have be er access and func on with the Reserved Sacrament. The new Altar Table will be made from the pulpit into a pedestal style altar as we have in the Bishop Lewis Chapel. It will be the same dimension as our present altar to accommodate all linens and hangings. We will use the exis ng Ambo from the Bishop Lewis chapel as the ambo for reading and preaching. Because the organ is a part of the renova on program, and the ver cal pipes in the balcony will be coming forth into the chancel wall above the organ console, consequently the balcony railing needs a redesign. The plexiglas panel and non historic spindles will be removed. The en rely new balcony railing will incorporate all of the carved panels of the chancel screen interspersed with wrought iron spindles. The same wrought iron will be incorporated into the railings at the extreme sides of the steps into the chancel. Sea ng in the en re chancel, except the Bishop s and Presiden al chairs, will be individual chapel sea ng with book holders (this includes the choir). A donor is assis ng us to get a couple of samples to examine. These proposals give us a founda on for discussion and explora on as we proceed with funding. Reno CROP Hunger Walks amounts received from each congregation: St. John s Presbyterian - $348; Reno First UMC - $873; First Congregational - $448; St. Paul s UMC - $339; Spanish Springs Presbyterian - $190; Good Shepherd Lutheran - $50; Faith Lutheran - $70; Lord Of Mercy Lutheran - $1055; Trinity Episcopal Cathedral - $1000; Sparks UMC - $3320; Anonymous route donations - $38.90. That brings the total to $7731.90.

Annual Reports ATTENTION ALL MINISTRY LEADERS: ANNUAL REPORTS for 2017 area due from all committees and programs the final week of November, Friday the 24th. This enables us to have adequate time to type, format and print the booklet to have in the hands of the congregation two weeks prior to our annual Meeting and Pot- Luck of Sunday, January 21st. We all will be able to relax through the Holidays if we can get all of our reports in early and with less stress. P AGE 6 A Pilgrimage & Welcome New Members Ever Consider a Spiritual Pilgrimage? C S P E S E S F W S F J J 11 21, 2018 Trinity Cathedral has been blessed with an opportunity, under the leadership of our Dean, Father William, to lead an eleven day pilgrimage to Scotland and England in June of 2018. We will visit numerous historical sites that are foundational to the development and growth of the Anglican Church with its Celtic roots. We will experience such places as the Island of Iona, the holy island of Lindisfarne, Canterbury and York Minster. There will be opportunities to worship with some of the communities we visit, have a daily journal, reflections and sharing time as we look at the lives of several saints: St. Cuthbert, the Venerable Bede, and St. Columba; as well as the significance of early faith communities in such places as Windsor Castle, Canterbury, York, Durham, and Glasgow. We are being offered a Tour Participant Incentive Program. As we promote the pilgrimage, and we reach the minimum participant count of 20, AND after the groups payments are received in 90 days (December 23, 2017), we will receive a check of $2,000. That is matched with an extra $100 per person from the cost of the trip. That amount will be determined by the total number of paying participants. So, if we are able to get 20 people, we will be receiving $4000 to apply to our fund raising with our Chancel Renovation. P AGE 7 Daughters of the King Daughters of the King: Who are we? The Daughters of the King began as a Bible class for young women in 1885 in New York City with the purpose of arousing interest and urging coopera on to work for Christ and His church. The class resolved that there would be prayer to God every day of their lives and that He would empower them for His work. Prayer was old to them, but the power of prayer and its reality came to these women afresh. The order grew as other churches became affiliated with the Daughters. We are now over all of the United States and have chapters on every con nent. Today we are a spiritual sisterhood of women dedicated to a life of Prayer, Service and Evangelism. We have made a commitment to Jesus as our Savior, and we follow Him as Lord of our lives. We are an Order for women who are communicants of the Episcopal Church, churches in communion with it, or churches in the Historic Episcopate. Today our membership includes women in the Anglican, Episcopal, Lutheran (ELCA) and Roman Catholic churches. As an order we differ from an organiza on because we take solemn vows life long vows to follow the Rule of Prayer and Rule of Service. We don t just enroll as members and a end mee ngs. A Daughter pledges herself to a life long program of prayer, service and evangelism, dedicated to the spread of Christ s Kingdom and the strengthening of the spiritual life of her parish. Our Rule of Prayer and Rule of Service are guides for conduct to be observed by all members. Our Rule of Life is based on our promise in the Bap smal Covenant. The Rule of Prayer for us is In the Chris an life nothing can be subs tute for prayer. It is a Daughter s daily recourse to the source of life and strength. Every member must have a rule of daily prayer. Communica on with God must be a growing, deepening rela onship with Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Each Daughter s Rule of Prayer should be carefully considered and guarded. It should be prayerfully chosen, reviewed regularly and revised periodically. We are a group of women living a Rule of Prayer and Service to our neighbors. We are women whom parishioners can look for love and for help in me of need, loneliness or strangeness. We seek to walk with God as our guide and try to draw those with whom we come in contact into the Church. We are women who work to spread Christ s Kingdom here on earth. We can never forget that prayer is the founda on for which our service grows. Prayer without work is empty words, service without prayer is labor lost. We meet together the first Monday of every month in the church library at 5:30 pm. All are welcome! We will be having new member discernment classes star ng in January and the classes generally run over a 12 week course. P AGE 8 Music & Outreach Music is flourishing at Trinity! On the heels of the consecra on of the cathedral, the diocesan choir made a wonderful impression. There were 39 singers with only half from Trinity choir, making it the largest diocesan choir in the last 5 years that Ma hew Estes has been conduc ng. Invita ons were given to all to join worship on Sunday. Three people worshipped at their Cathedral the following Sunday. Some commented that when they come to Camp Galilee in the summer, they may join the pick up summer choir for a Sunday. These rela onships are important to help make people feel this is their Cathedral. They need to know that worshiping one God together is a mission of Cathedral. The bible is full of stories of the hospitality (or lack of it) given to travelers; an honored and important sign of the ministry of Christ. Thank you to everyone who showed hospitality during the consecra on of the Cathedral. The Cathedral also has an ac ve concert series as an outreach to the community that builds rela onships. Forty+ dedicated people show up to the organ concert series on the First and Third Friday of the month. Several people get together for some food to talk with one another in addi on to hearing quality music. This is a hidden gem that perhaps you should consider a ending. Here are the November concerts: November 3 rd (First Friday) Dr. Ma hew Estes Reforma on & All Saints Celebra on November 17 th (Third Friday) Dr. Douglas Leightheimer Hear pieces for his doctoral degree in organ performance ****Newsflash Dr. Dorothy Reiss has been booked for May 4 th 2018. Dorothy is a top er organist who has won several interna onal organ compe ons. She was able to fit us in her busy travel schedule and leaves for Paris a er being with us. Matthew Estes, Music Director Angel Tree Project 2017 The intent of this Angel Tree Project is to reach out to children in our community who are in need, especially the poor and the homeless. This is an opportunity for us to give a basic gi of human need as we share the love of our Incarnate God, Jesus Christ. We are delighted that the Daughters of the King, St. Hildegard Chapter have taken this on as our annual service project that we may keep the tradi on going with this important Christmas outreach program to our community. 1. Through Stead, Desert Heights and Libby Booth elementary schools, we have iden fied approximately 200 children in need. Three specific things are requested in addi on to their name, gender and age: clothing size, shoe size, and toy wish. We will have the Angel Tree tags on the tree in the Bishop Lewis Chapel on Sunday November 5 th to give you maximum me for shopping. The Angel Tree Project will begin officially with a Kick Off Dinner in the Parish Hall on Friday, November 17 at 5:30 PM. The gi s need to be delivered to the church by Sunday, December 17 th for a blessing (Gi s will be gathered and placed in the Bishop Lewis Chapel) and will be delivered to the schools the following week for parent pick up. 2. An Angel Tree Tag is made on stock card for each child and will carry an iden fying number, the child s age, and the three pieces of informa on (clothing and shoe sizes and toy wish). This will be used to label the bundled gi s when submi ed back to the church. 3. A binder is prepared to keep a list/chart (Excel spread sheet) of all the children and the detailed informa on stated on the Angel Tag, as well as the name and phone/email of the donor. This register will be signed by a family or individual when they pick the Angel Tag from the tree, and they will be re checked and signed in when the gi s are returned to the church. Baby Bundles Baby Bundles is composed of and supported by members of Trinity and St. Catherine's Episcopal churches with items donated by both congrega ons we assemble Bundles of laye e items for St. Mary s and Renown hospitals. They are then distributed by hospital staff to disadvantaged new parents who have li le or nothing for their newborn. Right now we need girls solid color pants and bibs, boys washcloths, pants and afghans or quilts, and neutral colored ou its and hats. We also need white onesies. Any help with these items would be greatly appreciated. Clothing should be between 0 and 6 months. We s ll have enough diapers. The 2018 Stewardship Pledge Campaign is moving along and thank you notes are being worked on by Fr. William. Materials are being developed to start the capital campaign for the renova on work. A Legacy Society is being planned and the Endowment Board, Development Commi ee and interested members in a legacy society. They will meet on Monday October 23 for joint planning. Property: The parking lot has been re sealed and striped with a reversal of direc on for entering and exi ng. The change of direc on was suggested by the surveyor and technician as we would need to accommodate to code handicap parking and wider car spaces. Security concerns are s ll being addressed with no resolu on at present. Again the issue of keys and re keying is being discussed. The cleaning folks have been doing a superb job and many complements have been noted. A Bishop Search Commi ee has been formed by the diocese, and a representa ve of Trinity for our Mission District is Robyn Powers. She ran the Vestry through a procedure to determine our top priori es of characteris cs we wish to see in a bishop. Administra on and Dean s Report: The Conven on Planning Commi ee will be mee ng to do a de briefing to make notes for future use; and also to offer help to Elko for next year s conven on. The Bishop s Search Commi ee will now be included with our worship prayers. The Installa on Service for the Dean of the Cathedral will take place on Saturday, Dec.9 at 3:00 PM with the Bishop s Annual weekend visit (Dec 9 10). A dinner will follow. Commi ee Reports. Ministry Moments are being scheduled now that we are in the midst of our Annual Pledge Campaign. Human Needs: The annual Angel Tree dinner and fund raiser are scheduled for Friday, November 17 th at 5:30 PM. The 12:00 Noon Thanksgiving Dinner will take place a er the morning Thanksgiving Eucharist of Nov. 23 rd (10:30 AM). Funds have been coming in for Episcopal Relief along with dona ons to CROP and Galilee. Educa on: costumes are set for the 4:00 PM Christmas Service. The Educa on Wednesday adult class is doing an Old Testament overview. Fellowship: magnets are being purchased for the visitor gi bags. An evalua on of our Conven on planning and work is to be done soon. ALL COMMITTEES and PROGRAMS need to start working on their annual reports due November 27.
