B board of directors D Dear Friends, Here is the question about the Bexley Community Foundation that I am asked most often: What s different in Bexley since the Foundation set up shop in 2011? And here s the answer: Lots of things. But these are the Top Ten. 1. We have helped validate the concept that our dear Bexley can be a priority in our giving. 2. We have had the opportunity to watch collaborations mushroom between various organizations as the grant application process offers opportunities for partnerships to leverage resources. 3. We have seen tangible improvements with the introduction of kayaks on Alum Creek; digital equipment at the Drexel Theater; the return of Officer McGruff for Safety Town; Movies on Main Street and so much more. We have also seen the potential that comes from investing in a Community Improvement Corporation (CIC) and a community wide educational opportunity such as Chautauqua. Board of Directors 4. We now have four funds in which to invest the Community Fund; the Bexley Beautification Fund; the Youth and Recreation Fund and the Denise and Barry Blank Fund. These funds are focusing on different needs of our unique community and offer targeted giving to our donors. 5. We have an open door. Several of our donors just walk to 552 South Drexel to drop off their gifts. 6. We have the Halliday Society for Planned Giving as a way to give special recognition to donors who understand that planned gifts made today give resources for tomorrow s needs. 7. We have aligned ourselves with the Columbus Foundation so our funds are managed by an organization with a solid investment track record and impressive longevity. Susan Quintenz Chair of the Board 8. fall event how we raise money the Recreation and Parks Department is so grateful to the Bexley Community Foundation for their generous support. Through the Bexley Community Foundation Grant Program we have funded a community kayak/canoe program that provides an opportunity for the residents to get reacquainted with Bexley s greatest natural resource, Alum Creek, along with brick walkways and landscaping at Jeffrey Mansion, which once completed will provide the Jeffrey Estate with the much needed access and improvements it deserves. - Michael Price Recreation and Parks Director P Promises Made, Promises Kept - 2012 The Bexley Community Foundation s second annual Fall Campaign kick-off was held on September 27, 2012 at The Columbus Foundation. More than 175 Bexley residents gathered to listen to the progress that has been made and where we go from here. Honorary chairs for the event were Denise and Barry Blank and the Cornerstone Award mike duffy speaks at bexley high school was given to Rodney and Donna Waserstrom. The fall Campaign raises money that is then awarded through community grants during the following year. W What started as being in the right place, right time event evolved into the Bexley Community Foundation s first community-wide collaboration and the proclamation of November 8th as Mike Duffy Day. After seeing Mike discussing his most recent book, The Presidents Club on a national television show, the Bexley Community Foundation reached out to Bexley s outstanding educational institutions to bring Mike back to Bexley to talk about his book. Joining the Bexley Community Foundation in offering this presentation were the Bexley Education Foundation, Bexley Public Library, Capital University, Columbus School for Girls, Friends of the Drexel, JCC of Greater Columbus, St. Charles Preparatory School and Trinity Lutheran Seminary. Our partners were instrumental in providing venues for the events, student volunteers, technical expertise, and publicity. The Presidents Club, co-authored by Duffy (Bexley class of 76) and Nancy Gibbs, is a New York Times best-seller that offers a peek into the world s most exclusive fraternity. The book opens the doors to the Oval Office for a keyhole view of the relationships between past and sitting presidents. there are warm welcomes and then there are Bexley warm welcomes and the two really don t compare. It was wonderful to see so many longtime friends and classmates. - Mike Duffy Nearly 400 people attended the educational and enlightening presentation by Duffy held in the Schottenstein Auditorium at Bexley High School. The timing of the event, which was two days after the 2012 national general election, made the subject even more appropriate. NBC 4 s Colleen Marshall served as moderator for the event. -4- -5-

the youth and recreation fund I In May, the Bexley Community Foundation established the Youth and Recreation Fund with an initial celebration at Jeffrey Mansion. The fund is designed to impact programing that benefits a broad spectrum of Bexley s youth with an emphasis on new and emerging projects and initiatives. Applications for the first grant(s), up to $10,000, were due on February 1, 2013. Eligible projects would connect kids between the ages of 3 and 18 with our community through athletics; the arts; outdoor and indoor recreation; and mental and physical engagement. Future potential projects might include training programs for coaches, agricultural garden initiatives, children s theater programs, sporting events such as a kickball tournament, cycling or triathlon event, self defense classes, musical programs or film making classes. After the reunion, Denise and Barry Blank started talking about how much the Bexley community had meant to them and their family. Taking a cue from the class discussion of how they could pay forward, the Blanks decided to establish the Denise and Barry Blank Tree Fund at the Bexley Community Foundation. Their initial goal was to plant 24 maple trees in memory of the 24 deceased classmates. The fund enabled Denise and Barry to act on their life long passion for trees while creating a memorial for their former friends. the blank tree fund The commemorative maple trees were planted last fall along South Cassady Avenue and were recently dedicated on Arbor Day, April 27, 2013. Denise and Barry reached out to the Class of 62 to ask them for their support in this endeavor and the Foundation has received donations from as far away as Hawaii. Susan Quintenz, Chair of the Bexley Community Foundation said, We are thrilled that Denise and Barry have created the first sponsored fund at our Foundation. By planting roots for future generations to enjoy, the Blanks have honored former classmates while improving the landscape for today s residents. programs & grants S what we do M 2012 Major Grant Awards 2012 Small Grant Awards The Bexley Community Foundation is proud to announce our 2012 Small Grant recipients. This program funds projects of up to $5,000. The total of the 2012 Small Grant awards was $27,500. Bexley Historical Society - $5,000 Grant Title: Bexley Historical Museum Preventive Conservation Initiative With this grant the Society will install protective window film to reduce the UV light entering the museum and slow the deterioration of the valuable artifacts. Bexley Public Library - $5,000 Grant Title: Creation Station Software The funding for this project will be used to purchase Adobe Creative Suite 5 Master Collection for two imac computers. This project is part of the Technology Training Lab. City of Bexley - $5,000 Collaborating with: Bexley Public Library, Bexley Area Chamber of Commerce, Bexley Celebration Association Grant Title: Creating a Bexley Community Brand A well-defined and well-executed branding program for major stakeholders in Bexley will help the City promote itself effectively to the greater Columbus business and residential community. Funds from this grant will be used by this collaborative to engage a marketing/branding firm. City of Bexley Economic Development Department - $ 5,000 Grant Title: Bexley Community Improvement Corporation The purpose of this grant is to pay for the legal fees to form this corporation. The CIC will pursue acquiring land, undertaking redevelopment projects, and facilitating development of the Bexley community. City of Bexley - Police Department- $2,500 Collaborating with: Bexley Public Schools Grant Title: Bexley Safety Town Safety Town is a viable initiative educating children on stranger danger, fire safety, pedestrian safety, bicycle and animal safety. This grant will pay for one-time equipment and expenses for the program and is open to all Bexley elementary school students. City of Bexley Recreation and Parks Department - $5,000 Grant Title: Canoe/Kayak Program These approved grant funds will be used to purchase canoes/kayaks, materials for a rack construction at two access points and accessories to provide for the locking and transportation of boats. -8- The Bexley Community Foundation is proud to announce our Major Grant recipients for 2012. This program funds projects from $5,000 and up. Six Major Grants were awarded last year totaling $99,500. Bexley Historical Society - $5,000 Grant Title: Preventive Conservation Needs Assessment With this grant the Society will hire a trained conservator to evaluate current policies and practices. The conservator will also be recommending the development of a community outreach plan. Capital University and Bexley Public Library - $20,000 Collaborating with: Bexley Historical Society, Bexley Area Chamber of Commerce, City of Bexley Mayor s Office, City of Bexley Recreation and Parks Department, Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus Grant Title: Bexley Chautauqua --- July 16 20, 2013 When Ohio Was the Western Frontier will be the theme of this large collaborative of Bexley community, business and government leaders led by Capital University and the Bexley Library. City of Bexley - $7,000 Collaborating with: Capital University, Friends of the Drexel Grant Title: Movies on Main This collaborative will produce from May through September 2013 family movies on Capital s front lawn. Movies will be free of charge to all patrons. Ice cream from local vendors plus popcorn and soft drinks from the Drexel Theatre will be sold. City of Bexley Recreation and Parks Department - $12,500 Collaborating with: Alum Creek Corridor Committee Grant Title: Alum Creek Park Plan The funds will be used in conjunction with matching funds to assist in the creation of a comprehensive Alum Creek Park Plan. The firm will review the entire length of Alum Creek on the Bexley side with a focus on a continual park along Alum Creek between Main Street and Livingston Avenue. City of Bexley Recreation and Parks Department - $ 30,000 Grant Title: Jeffrey Mansion Brick Walkway This grant will fund the construction of walkways and landscaping on both sides of the driveway from Parkview Avenue to Jeffrey Mansion. Friends of the Drexel - $ 25,000 Grant Title: Upgrading to Digital Cinematography Digital cinematography is quickly becoming the norm in the movie theatre s nationwide industry. The Drexel needs to upgrade to this technology in order to remain a viable theatre. This grant will provide keystone funding in support of the Drexel Theatre s overall initiative to replace current projection equipment with advance technology. -9- last year the library purchased a collection of books with funds from the Bexley Community Foundation that place special emphasis on developing early literacy skills in children not yet old enough to read. These items have been hugely popular, and are checked out at double the rate of other children s materials. They are perfect companions to the early literacy toys we also purchased with BCF funds to complement our storytime activities. spotlight on our grants T This summer, take a step back in time and come face to face with history. The Bexley Community Foundation had the opportunity to support a unique community partnership that brings education, entertainment, and tourists to Bexley. Our community was chosen by the Ohio Humanities Council as one of five cities to host OHIO CHAUTAUQUA 2013: When Ohio Was the Western Frontier,which will take place July 16-20, 2013. The scholars for Ohio Chautauqua 2013: When Ohio Was The Western Frontier, will depict the frontier from five vastly different perspectives: naturalist and folk hero Johnny Appleseed, frontier aristocrat Margaret Blennerhassett, Iroquois leader Chief John Logan, Lewis & Clark expedition member York, and the hero of the Battle of Lake Erie Oliver Hazard Perry. This community partnership illustrates our grants mission, Susan Quintenz, Bexley Community Foundation Board president, said. We encourage our grantees to form community collaborations that will enhance the work of all of our organizations. It s wonderful to see this many local groups join together to bring a community-building event to our city. Capital University will host the signature red and white tent on Capital s front lawn. The five-day event offers an exciting mix of education and entertainment, including daily interactive workshops for children and adults at different venues throughout Bexley and musical performances and living history presentations each evening under the tent. All events are free and open to the public. It s been 34 years since Bexley first hosted a Chautauqua, and we re excited to be bringing this event back to Main Street in 2013. Bexley has a deep and meaningful sense of history, and the community is excited to celebrate our heritage and of course we would never miss an opportunity to enjoy good food and good company on Bexley s front lawn, said Bexley Mayor Ben Kessler. In addition to showcasing our city and strengthening relationships among community partners, events like Ohio Chautauqua broaden understanding of the historical and cultural contexts that shape our world, Capital President Denvy A. Bowman said. That s an important part of preparing informed and engaged citizens, and we re proud to lend our support as a hosting partner. The community partners planning the event include representatives from Capital University, Bexley Area Chamber of Commerce, Bexley Community Foundation, Bexley Historical Society, Bexley Public Library, Bexley Recreation and Parks Department, Bexley Women s Club, the City of Bexley, the Drexel Theatre, and the Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus. Bexley s event schedule is available online at www.ohiochautauquabexley.com - 10 - B bexley beautification fund 2012 was a landmark year for the Bexley Beautification Fund - it became a part of the Bexley Community Foundation and celebrated its 20th year and over $1,000,000 in public-private partnerships and support for community beautification and improvement projects. The Beautification Fund played a key role in Bexley being the first city in the country certified in early 2013 as an arboretum. Last year the Beautification Fund made grants of $36,350 to the City of Bexley to complete the North Cassady/Delmar gateway and to augment the planting of maple trees on South Cassady made possible by The Blank Tree Fund. The South Cassady tree project also received a grant of $6,700 from our Foundation s Denise and Barry Blank Tree Fund, demonstrating one of the benefits of the new organizational structure. Trees for Bexley, Bexley in Bloom and other gifts contributed $43,200 to the Beautification Fund in 2012 which had a value of $35,178 at year end. As a field of interest fund of our Foundation, the Beautification Fund receives fundraising, administrative and volunteer support which will help assure its continued success. The recent focus of the Beautification Fund has been on the gateway entrance and plantings at Cassady and Delmar along with building on the public-private partnership it has developed with the Community Housing Network. Just as a building s cornerstone joins two walls and strengthens its foundation, recipients of this award are true cornerstones of the Bexley community. Rodney and Donna Wasserstrom were honored as our second Cornerstone Award recipients at our Fall Event on September 27, 2012. The Wasserstrom family moved to Bexley in the 1930 s, where the 4th generation of Wasserstroms is now being raised. (1) During 2012 we had a general purpose community fund and three field-of-interest funds at The Columbus Foundation, into which all contributions to us were deposited. Assets held at The Columbus Foundation are not recorded in our financial statements until distributed to us. (2) At December 31, 2012 our funds at The Columbus Foundation were as follows: Community Fund $ 358,764 Bexley Beautification Fund 37,103 Youth and Recreation Fund 19,942 Denise and Barry Blank Tree Fund 11,406 Total $ 427,215 (3) During 2012, we awarded $173,700 in grants and distributed $51,340 on grants and projects awarded in 2012 and prior years. Due to the timing of our grant cycles and other factors, all or part of a grant is frequently distributed subsequent to the year in which the grant is awarded. (4) During 2012 operating expenses were funded by contributions from our Board members and corporate gifts designated for that purpose, and event expenses were funded by contributions from event sponsors. Rodney was introduced to helping others early in life. As a child, his father, Sidney, took him to the plant to pick out odds and ends of wood from mounds of sawdust for distribution to needy families for use as kindling. This early lesson has shaped a personal, family and business philosophy. Reflecting the values honored by the Cornerstone Award, Rodney once summed up the Wasserstrom giving philosophy by saying No matter now much you give, you are always the greatest recipient.
