St. John s Lutheran Church APRIL 2011 April 2011 Pastor s Ponderings Why Lent? by Pr. Kris Lent is the season of self-examination and repentance. We remind ourselves of our sin and mortality on Ash Wednesday, and we are invited to walk with Jesus along a journey that brought him to the cross. We consider what it means to worship and follow the Lord who emptied himself, taking the form of a slave he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross (Phil. 2: 7-8). At the end of our Lenten journey, we enter Holy Week, in which we celebrate the Lord s passion his betrayal, suffering and death. Why do we do this? Why do we focus on sin and the danger and darkness of the world? Why can t we just bask in the light and joy of Easter without the discipline of Lent? Because the God made known to us in Christ was a God who was rejected and crucified. We understand our faith through the lens of the cross. God is fully known for us in the weakness of a crucified peasant, who died alone and abandoned outside the city. Jesus entered into the brokenness of our world a world of danger, death, and despair and died in it. God emptied himself in Christ. We long to hear the good news of the triumphant, resurrected Christ. That stunning gospel proclamation will come. Yet, until that glorious Easter morning, we, like the Apostle Paul, desire to know nothing except Christ, and him crucified. We walk with Christ to the cross, taking the road less traveled, the road of acknowledging darkness and death and the role our own sin played in Jesus crucifixion. May our forty-day Lenten walk be a journey of truth for us, preparing us more fully for the blazing hope and dazzling joy of Easter. See you in worship! Pr. April 2011 VBS 2011 LUTHERDALE IS COMING TO US! Join us August 1-5 for a week of fun and games centered around Jesus. Our theme is Jesus Chooses Us! Kindergarten through 5th grade: Time: camp runs from 9am to 2pm Cost: $50 for the first child, $40 for each additional child within the same family. Food: Snack is provided but each child must bring their own lunch each day. Preschool: Time: camp runs from 9-11:30am Cost: $15 per child Registration will begin May 1st. After May 1st you will be able to download a registration form from our website, pick one up at the office or email Deborah at education@makedisciples.com and she will email you a copy. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED SNACK: We will also need someone in charge of purchasing, distributing and cleaning up snack. PRESCHOOL: we will need at least two adults (18yrs+) and two youth (6th grade+) K-5th GRADE: Many youth and adults will be utilized EMAIL DEBORAH at education@makedisciples.com to volunteer On Palm Sunday, we celebrate the first joy of the season, as we celebrate Our Lord's triumphant entrance into Jerusalem where he was welcomed by crowds worshiping him and laying down palm leaves before him. It also marks the beginning of Holy Week, with the greatest tragedy and sorrow of the year. Jesus' triumphant return to Jerusalem is only one side of the story. By now many of the Jews are filled with hate for Our Lord. They want to see him stoned, calling Him a blasphemer, especially after offering proof of His Divinity during a winter visit to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Dedication. After this, Jesus went to Perea, where he was summoned to Bethany. There he raised Lazarus from the dead, a miracle which wins Him such renown among certain Pharisees that they decided finally to end His life. Jesus took refuge at Ephrem returning six days before Passover to Bethany, triumphantly entering Jerusalem. That evening, He leaves Jerusalem and returns Monday. He spent time with Gentiles in the Temple, and on Wednesday left for the Mount of Olives. Here he foretold the apostles the events of the next several days, including His impending death. He returned to Jerusalem on Thursday, to share the Last Supper with His apostles. He was subsequently arrested and tried. He was crucified at Calvary on Friday, outside the gates of Jerusalem. Call Committee April 2011 At the congregational meeting on March 13 a call committee was formed. Their mission is to rewrite the letters of call for Pr. Scot and Pr. Kris. One elected member opted not to serve on the committee. Alexander Jacobs joined the St. John s family last summer as an interim pastor. He was charged with leading the Mission Exploration Team (MET) through their process. The MET submitted their final report to the congregation in February. On March 13, the congregation voted to accept the MET report and to begin to act upon the recommendations. The end of the MET process means many things, including the end of Pr. Jacobs time with us. His last day is April 3. There will be a cake reception, hosted by the Church Council, to thank him for his time, leadership, and guidance throughout these last months. When you see Pr. We, too, sing as we celebrate Easter, on April 24. Churches will be filled with the singing of the great Easter hymns along with instruments. We again experience God s marvelous redemption for us through Jesus death and resurrection. Martin Luther stated in his explanation of the second article of the creed: He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned human being. He has purchased and freed me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil, not with gold or silver but with his holy, precious blood and with his innocent suffering and death. He has done all this in order that I may belong to him, live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in eternal righteousness, innocence and blessedness, just as he is risen from the dead and lives and rules eternally. This is most certainly true. We gladly give praise and all honor to God for this great gift. May we celebrate and bask in the sunshine of God s grace and share the good I would like to thank all of the musicians, choirs, instrumentalists of all ages for their wonderful music ministry. St. John s is blessed with so many people who Make a joyful noise to the Lord. I also want to thank Sara Everts for her excellent work these past 5 years as Kids of the Kingdom, Children s Choir, director. She has graciously given of her time and love for children to serve St. John s. Thank you, Sara! Amy Bingenheimer has organized, emailed, and attended countless meetings with Sara and myself to keep the program running and to Amy, we also say a big Thank you! J o h n s P e r s o n n e l Committee is a lot like the new St. John s Ready Teams. We are a resource team which is available to the staff, council and committees at St. John s to provide human resource support at any time and especially during times of staff transition. It s our job to have good policies, documents and practices in place. Over the past several months, the Personnel Committee has been meeting with staff, doing research, and meeting with lay leaders and ministry volunteers to help the Mission Exploration T e a m, t h e s t a f f a n d congregational leaders to evaluate staffing models. We have specifically been working in the areas of youth and education, administrative support and custodial work. During the next month, we will continue to provide support in these areas and will be consulting with the Call Committee to provide whatever information they need. April 2011 Spotlight Ministries VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS The first VBS for Children with special needs is Saturday June 4 th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event will include music, crafts, food, children s sermon, recreation and a scavenger hunt. Volunteers will be needed to assist with each of these areas. We would also like to have one young person and one adult per special needs child. Closer to the event, there will be a one hour training session to prepare volunteers for the day. The session will be offered at a variety of times to help accommodate everyone. On Sunday May 22 the Adult Education hour will focus on the awareness of individuals with special needs. Watch the bulletin insert on Sundays and the Spotlight Ministries Board for more sign-up information. R.E.A.C.T. The Ready Emergency and Contact Team are up to 23 strong and growing. In February, there was a 4 hour Volunteer Management training and a two day preparedness training. The team then had a test run on March 7 th. The situation was a tornado in Watertown. COAD was activated and came to St John s for help. We needed shifts that day starting at 4:00 pm, and two shifts the following day. Within 40 minutes we had 14 people ready to be at the church by 3:00 pm. They are ready for the real thing. GROWTH TEAM The committee has come up with their acronym. It is I.N.V.I.T.E. (Inspiring New and Valued Introductions Through Evangelism). They continue to review ideas for growing our church. ALL PEOPLES COMMUNITY GARDEN The indoor garden: + Stepping Stones students have planted daffodil bulbs in preparation for selling flowers at Easter time + Students are also harvesting small amounts of herbs and micro-greens to eat and to sell The Global Garden Greenhouse: + HGA GLO-Think team is putting together architectural plans to be completed by the end of March + Work days will begin in April with the removal and re-construction of the All Peoples sign The Vegetable Garden: + All Peoples won a raffle prize a 275 gallon rain barrel which was installed in the veggie garden. The city has given permission to harvest water from the roof of the house next door (also owned by the city). A second rain barrel will be installed later this month. + Work days will begin in April to build up garden beds and prepare the garden for planting AKERI PARISH KINDERGARTEN No update at this time. His mom, Estela, is a member of the family commission and sends this letter to St. John s: Dear brothers and sisters of St. John s Church, Receive this cordial greeting and many sisterly hugs to all of the lambs of St. John s church. With this brief greeting, I continue on and communicate the following Brothers and sisters of the church, I want to tell you thank you for the support that you give to the church, Heroes of the Faith. In the month of March the church will celebrate its fifteenth birthday and I hope, with much caring, for our partnership to be present on this very special day for the people of Heroes of the Faith. I also want to tell you thank you for the help with you give to the boys and girls of this community. May God bless each and every one of these persons who sponsor the children and youth who have so many needs. God multiplies this and gives an abundance of blessings. Pastor Rochelle Melander continues to work with students on their creative writing skills in Dreamkeepers. Miss Jeanne has a new job in Madison, so the indoor gardening is being run by Linda and the St. John s team. During Lent, families from All Peoples travel to mission partner churches for dinner and worship, so Stepping Stones lets out a little early and there is no Wednesday Night Alive Spring Cleaning??? Your used items can find a new purpose in ministry! All Peoples can use the following Arts & Crafts supplies Buckets with handles (all sizes) Paper products (from plates to toilet paper) Leftover Sunday School stuff (stickers, posters, prizes ) Envelopes (all sizes) Books for the library (especially devotion books and Bible study books) Towels (including old ones) Waste baskets Games & outdoor toys (jump ropes, bubbles) Garden tools All Peoples is not accepting Clothing or shoes Encyclopedias or romance/violence novels Spotlight Ministry Garden Project Outside in the Global Garden The city has given approval for moving the sign from the Global Garden to the corner of 2nd & Clarke to make way for the greenhouse to be constructed at the front side of the Global Garden (left of building in photo). Final plans were chosen on March 27th. The team is working on leads to secure free landscaping resources. As soon as the weather cooperates, a work day will be scheduled to move the sign. Inside the Third Floor Garden The daffodils have been planted and will be ready to sell for Easter! Stepping Stones students are learning about plant parts and doing research for the vegetable garden. Outside in the Veggie Garden All Peoples won a rain barrel in a raffle and will soon be harvesting water from the house next door! EVER WONDER WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF WE TREATED OUR BIBLE LIKE WE TREAT OUR CELL PHONE? What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets? What if we flipped through it several times a day? What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it? What if we used it to receive messages from the text? What if we treated it like we couldn't live without it? What if we gave it to Kids as gifts? What if we used it when we traveled? (we'd be asked to deplane!) What if we used it in case of emergency? This is something to make you go... hmm where is my Bible? Oh, and one more thing. Unlike our cell phone, we don't have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill. April 2011 A Nun grading papers...can you imagine the Nun sitting at her desk grading these papers, all the while trying to keep a straight face and maintain her composure! (I know I couldn't!) Pay special attention to the wording and spelling. If you know the Bible even a little, you'll find this hilarious! It comes from a catholic elementary school test. Kids were asked questions about the old and new testaments. The following statements about the Bible were written by children. They have not been retouched or corrected. Incorrect spelling has been left in. 1. In the first book of the Bible, Guinessis, God got tired of creating the world so he took the Sabbath off. 2. Adam and eve were created from an apple tree. Noah's wife was Joan of Ark. Noah built an ark and the animals came on in pears. 3. Lots wife was a pillar of salt during the day, but a ball of fire during the night. 4. The Jews were a proud people and throughout history they had trouble with unsympathetic genitals. 5. Sampson was a strongman who let himself be led astray by a jezebel like Delilah. 6. Samson slayed the philistines with the axe of the apostles. 7. Moses led the Jews to the Red Sea where they made unleavened bread which is bread without any ingredients. 8. The Egyptians were all drowned in the dessert. Afterwards, Moses went up to Mount Cyanide to get the Ten Commandments. 9. The first commandment was when Eve told Adam to eat the apple. 10. The seventh commandment is thou shalt not admit adultery. 11. Moses died before he ever reached Canada. Then Joshua led the Hebrews in the battle of Geritol. 12. The greatest miricle in the Bible is when Joshua told his son to stand still and he obeyed him. 13. David was a Hebrew king who was skilled at playing the liar. He fought the Finkelsteins, a race of people who lived in biblical times. 14. Solomon, one of David's sons, had 300 wives and 700 porcupines. 15. When Mary heard she was the mother of Jesus, she sang the magna carta. 16. When the three wise guys from the east side arrived they found Jesus in the manager. 17. Jesus was born because Mary had an immaculate contraption. 18. St. John, the blacksmith, dumped water on his head. 19. Jesus enunciated the golden rule, which says to do unto others before they do one to you. He also explained a man doth not live by sweat alone. 20. It was a miricle when Jesus rose from the dead and managed to get the tombstone off the entrance. 21. The people who followed the lord were called the 12 decibels. 22. The epistels were the wives of the apostles. 23. One of the oppossums was St. Matthew, who was also a taximan. 24. St. Paul cavorted to christianity. He preached holy acrimony which is another name for marraige. 25. Christians have only one spouse. This is called monotony. Page 15
St. John s Lutheran Church Cub Scout World Camp Twenty-nine scouters attended Rokilio themed Cub Scout World Camp near Kiel, WI. and stayed in a cabin that looked like a fort complete with a stockade. One activity we did was a snowball fight with one team defending the fort and the other attacking. We played board games of sequence and pit. The outdoor activities were sledding, astronomy and capture the flag with a cub scout pack. The menu included Biscuits, Gravy & Sausages, California Egg Crackle, Hobo Stew, Cowboy Beans & Texas Toast. This was also Adam Miller's Eagle planned camping trip. Thanks to Adam for organizing a fun filled weekend. Indian Mound Cabin Camping Near Oconowomoc We had 48 scouters in two cabins attend the electronic weekend. The scouts brought TV's and electronic games. We had a Friday night cram session for the first aid meet. The menu included: Roast Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, Stuffing, Corn, Scrambled Eggs, Biscuits & Gravy, Meatball Sandwiches with Tomato soup and a Pizza snack. Model Rocket launching at Nagawaukee County Park was organized by Rohn Roth. We also attended the annual Onatah District First Aid Meet in New Berlin under the leadership of Scot Flannery. The Super Chicken Patrol consisting of Nick Gubbins, James Kitscha, Adam Miller, Clayton, Lewis, Matthew Peterson won 1st place in the Senior Division. The Purple Platypuses Patrol comprising of Brandon Mayhew, Peter Marincic, Matt Bentley, Karsten Trzcinski & Jack Huebner won 1st Place in the Natural Division. We also had the Wild Game Patrol and the Survivor Patrol take 2 nd and 3 rd places in the Natural Patrol Division. Great Job Everyone!!! By: Troop Historian Collin Karrasch Other activities this month The Troop helped out at the annual Rotary Pancake Fest at the Waukesha Expo. We served Coffee and Pancakes, set and cleared the tables. A bunch of scouts attended the Milwaukee Auto Show under the leadership of Bob Norton. One of the neat displays was TV and Movie Cars like the Bat Mobile and the car from Back to the Future. The scouts have been working on first aid, athletic, scout rank skills during meetings. Webelos Cross Over Ceremonies The troop participated in two Webelo cross over ceremonies at Rose Glen & Randall Schools. Thanks to William & Matthew Peterson, Collin Karrasch and Andrew Kempen. They represented the troop and conducted the ceremonies. Troop Scribe William Peterson holds the leadership position of Troop Scribe. He records the weekly scout attendance & participation, and awards the monthly participation prizes.
