CLARENDON COURIER S~rinp 2005 26 THE YOPP FUNERAL HOME REGISTER In November 2004, Gene Todd gave the North Carolina Room of the New Hanover Public Library the records of the Yopp Funeral Home, which operated in Wilmington from 1892 until 1966, under the direction of father and son, Walter Edward Yopp, Sr. and Jr. The firm was first located at 206 Princess Street. They were for a time at 21 1 Princess Street before moving in 1937 to a new building at 1207 Market Street. After the younger Yopp's death in 1968, the business was sold to Pender Burke and continued operating for a time as Burke-Yopp Funeral Home until it closed in the early 1970s. The early Yopp ledgers from 1892 through 191 1 are primarily financial records. They usually show the name of the person responsible for the payment of services, the date of the services and often the cemetery. In some instances, there is more information. These records are not indexed. The ledgers from 1912-193 8 contain more complete records, with the decadent being named and date of services rendered. There are approximately 1500 names from the records of this period which have been indexed, annotated and arranged alphabetically by J. Kenneth Davis, using the original record books and other sources. Generally, this contains the name, birth and death dates, next of kin and the burial place. This index is available in the North Carolina Room of the New Hanover Public Library. The records from 1938-1966 are filed in chronological order. This register file contains some 4000 "shucks" numbered from 1 to 4019, and are in date order when the fbneral service occurred. (There are some shucks that are dated after 1966, the last being in 1973.) The bulk of the shucks are from 2 February 1938 until December 3 1, 1966. Please note that the records of 5 March 1943 through 4 March 1945 are missing from the collection. These cards are seldom filled out in their entirety, but do generally have the place and date of death, names of the parents of the deceased, survivors, pallbearers and the church and fbneral information. In addition, there maybe other information including correspondence with the family of the deceased, obituary, medical records, etc.- even the details of the clothing purchased for the deceased. This collection of shucks has been cleaned and organized by J. Kenneth Davis. An alphabetical index has been prepared by Ann Hewlett Hutteman, which can be used in the North Carolina Room. The Courier editor recently found a person "missing" from her family tree for years by looking up the shuck on his fbneral. The long, lost relative died in Tacoma, Maryland and did not have a death certificate in New Hanover County, nor a stone in the Winter Park Cemetery. She even found that her father was a pallbearer at the services. All Lower Cape Fear Researchers should be indebted to Gene Todd, J. Kenneth Davis, Peter Ambler and Ann Hewlett Hutteman for making this collection available for research.

CLARENDON COURIER Spring 2005 44 MORE SOCIETY NEWS Held on March 12, 2005, the Eastern Regional Spring Workshop, which was sponsored jointly by the North Carolina Genealogical Society and the Old New Hanover Genealogical Society was a success by any standard. Over 70 genealogists were in attendance at the main library to hear Lloyd Bockstruck of Dallas, Texas, give four interesting and extremely informative lectures. He emphasized the importance of Court records, compared Colonial land records of North and South Carolina, gave hints as to how to research the English in the Caribbean and traced migration trails from North Carolina into the states of South Carolina, Alabama Georgia and Mississippi. We are gratehl to NCGS, and Ann Bashnight and her committee for including our local society in this event. Our picnic held on April 23, 2003 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church was also a success. We had about 30 in attendance, who enjoyed the fellowship and particularly the delicious desserts prepared by our talented culinary members. Mr. John D. Tew presented a program on the American Revolution Battle of Elizabethtown. Ms. Lucy Glover, Church Historian, graciously, told us of the history of St. Paul's and gave us a brief tour of the sanctuary. Thank you to all who made the occasion one to remember! At a meeting held during lunch at the Eastern Workshop, our society elected a new officers. Ms. Charlotte Fetterman has graciously consented to become our new president. C. L.(Pete) Davis will remain as Vice-president. Carolyn Corbett will again be Secretary and will be assisted by Marjorie Cuzzocrea.
