This is a great way to meet people and form friendships. Joining a havurah (friendship group) is a great way to get to know other members of the congregation. Havurot have flourished at Tikvat Israel for many years, resulting in many life-long relationships. The idea of havurot was developed by Rabbi Mordeccai Kaplan, founder of the Reconstructionist Movement. His concept was to get small Jewish groups to band together for study and observance of Jewish rituals and life cycle events. At Tikvat Israel, each havurah is self-directed, planning its activities based on the interests of its members. Some groups are social in nature, while others focus on religious, family or study-related activities. Past activities of TI havurot have included potluck dinners, book discussions, sports outings, musical or theater events, movies, Shabbat dinners, Havdalah services and holiday celebrations. If this is an opportunity you wish to explore, please contact Amy Matathias at 301-570-4496 or TIHavurah@aol.com. This small group of volunteers from Tikvat Israel participated in the B nai Brith and JSSA Project Hope. Tikvat Israel has participated in Project Hope for several years; this year, we delivered to 34 homes. Yasher Koach to the following for helping with the deliveries: Lynne Benzion, Marcelle Copaken, Rachelle Fobe, Jay Goldman, Maya Chauls and Jon, Ruben and Tami Silverstone, Hillary, Justin and Talia Riebman, and Amy, Dan, Becca and Sam Matathias. Manna Food Drive On Sunday, March 15, we collected approximately 700 lbs. of food for the Manna Food program of Montgomery County. In addition, our USY donated approximately 200 boxes of macaroni and cheese from Purim. Thank you to all who donated to the food drive. From the Rabbi s Desk Rabbi Howard Gorin Against the background of the Madoff scandal, as the aftershocks still reverberate in our community, it is probably not wise to say, I have a great investment opportunity for you. Yet that is precisely what I am going to tell you about, an investment that has grown by a staggering 218% in only four years. Let me explain. In August 2004 my family and I decided to honor my father s memory by establishing a fund in his name under the aegis of the Israeli Free Loan Association (IFLA). We donated a mere $5000 to create this fund, one of only 235 named funds to be created to date. That $5000 has been used to provide six loans to needy individuals, totaling close to $16,000 of financial help to allow them to remain self-sufficient and independent during these difficult times. How did our loan fund produce a return of such magnitude? As loan recipients repay what they have borrowed, From the President s Perspective the funds are then recycled to create new loans. As a result, my father s fund now has achieved a helping value of 318% of the original donation. A letter from IFLA founder and honorary chairman, Professor Eliezer Jaffe, stated the following: T h e I F L A h e l p s n e e d y Israelis start businesses, move into decent housing, obtain university education, pay emergency medical, housing and education expenses. Our loans for families of terror victims, single mothers, adopting couples and handicapped children and adults make a crucial difference in their lives. The IFLA helps people remain self-supporting and self-respecting. To date, over 34,000 individual, families or small businesses have received our interest free loans. The IFLA notes with pride that the default rate is only 1% compare that to the foreclosure rate in parts of our country and that administrative costs are less than 5% of total financial activity. Unfortunately, given the state of the global economy, the need for interest-free loans from the IFLA is at least double of what they are currently capable of allocating. We can be proud that Tikvat Israel through the leadership of its Tzedakah Chavurah is on board as having established its own named loan fund. You can support the work of IFLA by sending a donation to the Tikvat Israel Tzedakah Chavurah with a note recommending that the donation be put to use in our congregation s account with the IFLA. To establish a named fund of your own, please visit the IFLA s website www.freeloan.org.il for more information. Sam Freedenberg If you go by just the numbers, the Conservative Jewish movement in the U.S. is in trouble demographically. The National Jewish Population Survey 2000-2001 found that the number of Jewish households affiliated with a Conservative synagogue had dropped from 43 to 33 percent from 1990 to 2000, while Reform affiliations grew from 35 to 39 percent and Orthodox grew from 16 to 21 percent. And, with the national Jewish population essentially static, there is no rising tide of overall growth to offset the proportional decline in the number of Conservative Jews. Are there reasons to be pessimistic? Sure. But just because the big picture may be bleak doesn t mean that on the local level there is reason for despair. In fact, here at Tikvat Israel, I am feeling just the opposite. As I write this, our membership committee, chaired by Lynne Benzion, is meeting to plan a number of new membership development initiatives. I am confident that Lynne and her committee will work hard to boost our membership ranks. But an optimism tempered by realism dictates that the prospects of a significant jump in our numbers may not be possible in the current climate. And that is why it is more important than ever that our membership program include a strong retention component. This is not just the province of Lynne s committee or our board of directors. Membership retention is the responsibility of every member of Tikvat Israel who cares about the future of the synagogue. We will continue to focus on planning events and programs that are halachically appropriate, fiscally sound, and geared toward providing a positive experience for as many members as possible. And I hope that, whatever your level of involvement in our synagogue, you will do what you can to help keep it the member-friendly congregation that we all love and that was one of the reasons why most of us joined in the first place, whether it was at Beth Tikva 40 years ago, Temple Israel 30 years ago, Tikvat Israel 10 years ago or just last summer. Do you see someone new at Shabbat services? Please greet them. Whether they are veteran members returning after a long 3 absence or newcomers to the community, I guarantee they ll appreciate the gesture. Do you know someone who has a synagoguerelated problem or question and doesn t know where to turn? Please encourage them to contact the appropriate people the office, the rabbi or cantor, or me and offer to do it for them if you think that will help. Or, on a more mundane level, do you see a stray gum wrapper on our front patio? Please pick it up and put it in the trash. Is someone struggling with our sometimes-balky front doors? Please give assistance where you can. Sure, this is all simple, common courtesy. But we live in an often discourteous, or at least indifferent, world. Going even a bit out of the way to reach out to a fellow member at Tikvat Israel, and to make our facility a more inviting one wherever we can, can do wonders. You may just be helping to keep some fellow members in the fold by reminding them of what makes our congregation so special and encouraging them to make a similar gesture to their fellow congregants.

CANTOR S CORNER Cantor Rochelle Helzner TEEN SERVICE - MAY 9 at 10:15 a.m. (Note change of date) Teens, post Bar/Bat Mitzvah through high school, organize and run this Shabbat morning service with the help of our song leader, Ruth Geller. SHABBAT IS SPECIAL - New Time The Shabbat Is Special services on Fridays, May 1 and June 5 will begin at 7:30 p.m. instead of 7:15 p.m., as we are experimenting with a different starting time. These services, led by Cantor Helzner, are for families with young children. K A B B A L AT S H A B B AT W I T H INSTRUMENTS The next Kabbalat Shabbat with Instruments will be held on Friday, May 22 with mincha beginning at 6:15 p.m. in the Flax Library. Kabbalat Shabbat with Instruments is an uplifting, traditional Shabbat evening service which includes spirited melodies accompanied by guitar, piano, bass and percussion. Send a check or ask to be billed. GRADUATES TO BE HONORED Tikvat Israel will honor all high school and college graduates from our congregation on Shabbat morning, June 13. If a member of your family will be graduating, please contact Gabby Miller at millerdeaver@ gmail.com right away. Mazel Tov! Treasurer Talk Carol Chelemer If your schedule permits, please visit Tikvat Israel on a weekday to enjoy the voices and laughter of the children enrolled in our own Broadman-Kaplan Early Childhood Center, as well as the Hebrew Day Institute. Children fill our classrooms, social hall, sanctuary and grounds. We cherish our children knowing that they will carry our traditions forward and we wish them all the best that life can offer. In addition to wonderful staff and programming, Tikvat Israel has provided our children with two attractive and funfilled playground structures: one for the preschool set and one for elementary school students. These playgrounds are an asset to our synagogue and a testament to Tikvat Israel s commitment to the next generation. Through Rabbi Gorin s generosity, Tikvat Israel met its obligation to pay for these structures. Now, our community must meet its obligation to reimburse the Rabbi. Please join me in making a contribution toward the cost of these playgrounds because, as I see it, who wants to belong to a synagogue deprived of the voices and laughter of children at play? Shavuot Schedule THURSDAY, MAY 28 Mincha: 7:30 p.m. Candlelighting Study Session: Shavuot through the Ages Origins and Development Maariv: 9 p.m. Kiddush, Motsi, Dessert, Birkat Hamazon FRIDAY, MAY 29 Shacharit: 9:30 a.m. (Bring Bikkurim) Special Kiddush Mincha/Kabbalat Shabbat/Maariv: 6:30 p.m. SATURDAY, MAY 30 Shacharit: 9 a.m. (Note earlier starting time) Study Session: 7 p.m. Mincha: 7:50 p.m. Seudah Shlishit and Study Session Maariv and Havdalah: 9:10 p.m. Immediate Past- President Expresses Thanks I want to thank all those who so kindly honored me on Erev Shabbat, March 27, 2009, for my service as President of Tikvat Israel. In particular, I want to thank Danny Bachman, Hilary Berman, Roz Kram and Larry Gorban for the time and effort they put into the event, and to Julie Mazur and Michael Grossman for putting together the wonderful booklet. Also, many thanks to Rori Pollack and the children of the Broadman-Kaplan ECC for the wonderful place settings. I am so very grateful to those who were there in person or in spirit; it was a wonderful evening. I wish to again express my gratitude for the opportunity to serve Tikvat Israel in this capacity. I have learned many lessons some from my failures, and many from our shared successes all of which I am applying in almost every aspect of my professional and personal life. I will always be grateful for the education I have gained from this unique opportunity to lead our wonderful community. Ron Rabin 4

Broadman-Kaplan Early Childhood Center Rori Pollak, Director When you have a talented staff like we do at TI, the wonderful journey the children travel when they learn about a holiday or a mitzvah is amazing in its own right. But add to that journey documentation in the form of artwork, stories, music, cooking and discussions, and the adventure traveled is mind blowing. At the ECC learning is the journey traveled, not the destination. We strive to have the children ask questions and question the answers, open their minds and discover ideas. Here are some of the amazing things the ECC staff and children have done. The ECC is Happy It s Purim: The children just love celebrating Purim. Everyone looked adorable in costume. This year the staff set up different activity areas for the children. The children went from class to class enjoying a hamantashen filling tasting challenge, an interactive Purim story, a mini carnival, dancing and mishloach manot bag decorating. Prior to this culminating event, some of the classes made their own Megilah for the Book of Esther, created new and fun ways to make rashanim (graggers), and baked hamantashen for mishloach manot. The ECC learns about Hachnasat Orchim (the mitzvah of hospitality): The children learned about welcoming people into their classrooms as they prepared for our annual He & Me Breakfast. Many classes discussed what it means to welcome people into their class or home. What do we do to get ready for visitors? The children baked, cleaned and even decorated as they prepared to welcome their special guests. The ECC Celebrates Pesach: No matter how early we start learning about Pesach, there never seems to be enough time. One of our new teachers began the unit by asking her class of 3- and 4-year-olds, What do you KNOW about Pesach? and What do you want to LEARN about Pesach? These two simple questions prompted great discussions and a documentation chart (answers to the two questions) that filled a whole board. She and I both were truly amazed at what they remembered and what they wish to still learn about. Most of the classes made seder plates, haggadot, charoset and a Four Questions book. One class tried to bake their own matzah in a solar oven. The older children took their annual trip to the matzah bakery; what fun! We invited parents and friends to our model seder. The children helped me tell the story of Passover, which included fun Passover songs. Following our story, the children invited their parents and friends back to the rooms where each class held their own seder. We want to thank Rabbi Gorin and Cantor Helzner for making our Passover memorable and fun. The Rabbi read the story Only 9 Chairs to giggling groups of children. The Cantor led Bedikatz Chametz (burning the chametz) with the children after they collected the hidden chametz in their classrooms. Registration is now being accepted for CLUB ECC 2009 & the 2009-2010 School Year: We welcome children between the ages of 18 month and 5 years. Application/waitlist forms and enrollment information can be found on our website, www.broadmankaplan.org. For more information or to schedule a tour, please call the ECC office at 301-251-0455. GoodSearch.com is a new Yahoopowered search engine that donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. Use it just as you would any search engine, get quality search results from Yahoo, and watch the donations add up! GoodShop.com is a new online shopping mall which donates up to 37 percent of each purchase to your favorite cause. Hundreds of great stores including Amazon, Target, Gap, Best Buy, ebay, Macy s and Barnes & Noble have teamed up with GoodShop and every time you place an order, you ll be supporting your favorite cause. Just go to www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter Broadman-Kaplan Early Childhood Center of Tikvat Israel (Rockville, MD) as the charity you want to support. OR, you can simply go to our school s website homepage, www. broadman-kaplan.org, and use the search button at the top of the page. The charity has already been set up in the coding to be collected by our school! Be sure to spread the word. GoodSearching! 5

Youth and Family Programming Lynn Berk, Director We will be saying goodbye to two of our Youth Department staff at the end of this program year. Hillary Hirsch served as Bonim advisor for a year and a half, and then moved up to become our USY advisor this past November. She has done an excellent job with both groups. She will graduate from the University of Maryland later this month and will be moving to Ohio to become a synagogue youth director. I guess we were a good influence on her. Deanna Levin has led our Machar group this past year. She is also graduating from the University of Maryland and will be attending graduate school next year. We wish them both the best of success in their new endeavors. Kadima advisor Dana Rothstein will return for a fifth year, and Bonim advisor Shana Weiner will return for her second year. Buffy s Bark Mitzvah Join us for Buffy s Bark Mitzvah on Sunday afternoon, May 31. This event is open to every pet lover. Bring your dogs on a leash. All other pets must be caged or crated. The program will feature educational displays from the Humane Society, mobile pet groomers, local pet store venders, arts and crafts (pet bowls to personalize, dog bandannas and bone-shaped placemats to decorate), relay races, contests and a special blessing of the pets. Lag B Omer Picnic and Locks of Love On Sunday, June 14, we will hold a Lag B Omer picnic in the grassy area behind the synagogue. The picnic will feature a BBQ lunch, time to relax and enjoy the good weather and watch our children enjoy the new ECC playground equipment, play Ga Ga and basketball. The picnic will be followed by haircuts for Locks of Love. Locks of Love is a public nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. They meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality human hair wigs. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The wigs help to restore the children s self-esteem and confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers. Staff members of Rainbow Salon in White Flint Mall will cut hair. They are just cutting off the ten inches; this is not a regular haircut. Everyone donating his or her hair to Locks of Love will receive a certificate for a discount on a haircut at Rainbow Salon. Donating Hair to Locks of Love 1. 10 inches of hair, measured tip to tip, is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece. 2. Hair must be in a braid or ponytail before it is cut. 3. Hair must be clean and completely dry before it is mailed in. 4. Hair that is colored or permed is acceptable. 5. Hair that has been bleached (usually this refers to highlighted hair) is not usable. HAZAK Examines the Public Media Image of Israel At this month s HAZAK meeting on Thursday, May 14, Avi Ashery will address the topic, The Public Media Image of Israel Success or Failure? Religious School Tamar Weinsweig, Director It is truly amazing just how close we really are to year s end. As we are drawing nearer and nearer to the end, I ask myself how much we have done to enhance our students Jewishness this year, and is it enough? I ask myself how many of our students have thought differently about any aspect of their learning because of something we have said or something we have done. Indeed, our teachers have put their hearts and souls into every one of the sessions, and we hope that yes, it is enough, Dayenu! Some of us had the privilege of having Robin Lempert and Harvey and Naomi Kaplan lead a Kabbalat Shabbat program along with Cantor Helzner, who added a magical dimension with Shabbat songs. Grade 7 students attended a Shabbat service/dinner at the home of their teacher, Mr. Avy Ashery. Indeed, our teachers make being Jewish come alive. This past month we have examined Pesach, the holiday where we have turned into a nation. Some students experienced a model Seder, beautifully led by Robin Lempert, where our children heard an actual story of slavery and deliverance, created plagues, and enjoyed Pesach foods. Some students talked about the fact that really, the Hebrews had enough time to bake real bread, but rather obeyed God s word to take their time, slaughter a lamb, use its blood for protection, BBQ it for the world to smell, eat it, and burn the rest (just read Exodus 12: 21-27). We asked why, hoping that this is a way to have our children wonder and enhance their Jewishness by constant questioning. We had a Holocaust memorial service that was led by students in grade 7. The children lit 60 candles in memory of our 6 million brothers and sisters who perished. Holocaust survivor Charlene Schiff gave us a personal testament of what it was like to be a forest child escaping the Nazis for over two years, until she was saved and made her way to freedom. Mrs. Schiff had our attention from beginning to end. Dr. and Mrs. Copaken had arranged f o r h e r t o c o m e a n d speak to us; what a gift. We hope that our children w i l l t a k e Question, question, question... upon themselves the responsibility of being witnesses of the Holocaust so as to enhance themselves as Jews by keeping a watchful eye on injustice, and fulfill the idea of, Love thy neighbor as you love thyself. It was emotional for me to be a part of a memorial service for the fallen Israeli soldiers during Yom Hazikaron, as I was once an IDF soldier. We lit more candles and made peaceful wishes on behalf of Israel, and the people of Israel. We hoped that our children will have a place in their soul for their own, as Kol Israel Arevim ze laze all of Israel are responsible for one another. We emerged out of the sadness of Yom Hazikaron, into a festive and exciting Yom Haatzmaoot program, where we celebrated 61 years of a place we can call our own whether we live there or not. We hope that the students Jewishness was enhanced by feeling a part of a nation that has greatly contributed, in its short life, to the world in every way. A love for Israel is a value we are trying to instill in our children, while encouraging questions. A love for being Jewish is a value we are trying to instill in our children, by reminding them every day to keep their heads held up high, and have pride in who and what they are, but also of what they can become. Please join me in congratulating our confirmation class: Shayna Solomon, Dale Kline, David Haft, Daniel Freedman, Brandon Ehrlich and Ross Apter. Mazal Tov to all of you, and may you go from strength to strength. Confirmation will take place Saturday, May 16. We hope to see you all there so that our simchas can be shared by many! Shepherd s Table Coordinator Position Richard Stoll For more years than I can remember, I have been the Tikvat Israel Coordinator for Shepherd s Table. Suddenly, I m very tired and no longer wish to continue as coordinator. The responsibilities of the coordinator are relatively simple. Call the list of volunteers and learn who will be available on that fifth Monday night. The coordinator does not even have to be a volunteer at Shepherd s Table, although both Larry Gorban (my predecessor) and I have always been there. Tikvat Israel s next night at Shepherd s Table is Monday, June 29. Unless someone volunteers as coordinator, we will not support Shepherd s Table that night. Unless someone contacts me in the next several weeks, I will call Shepherd s Table the second week in June and inform them of the situation. Please contact me at 301-946-8435 or rdstoll@aol.com if you have any concerns or are interested in the coordinator position. Thanks to the many who have helped over the years. 7

Women s Network Bobbi Gorban, Sisterhood/Women s Network President SISTERHOOD/WOMEN S NETWORK: WILL YOU MISS IT? Sisterhood/Women s Network has been a part of our synagogue for more than 40 years. Hard-working women from both Temple Israel and Beth Tikva brought a special network together for Shabbat kiddushim, rummage sales, teas and membership events, and ran the Judaica shop. It has been around for several generations. But the strength and commitment are not there anymore. Over the last several years, things have changed. When I began my participation in sisterhood, a working board of committed women planned and implemented many and varied programs. Each year since then, the membership numbers have declined. Fewer events have been held, with fewer attendees. Support for the JTS Torah Fund has decreased. Despite my attempt to keep the Rosh Chodesh group going, it has folded due to lack of participation. Our book group has been a great experience for those who attend. This year I offered several programs in the area, and only 2 or 3 people attended each one. So, will you miss Sisterhood/Women s Network if it doesn t exist anymore? We would love for those women who have never belonged to join us now, and for those who have been members in the past to reconnect. Long-time members have found their participation in Sisterhood/Women s Network to be a special bonding experience, and they have made good friends. Also, it would be a shame for JTS to lose our financial support at a time like this. I want to thank Janice Balin for being our treasurer and membership chair, Fortuna Scheige for being Torah Fund chair, Angie Hersh for creating a wonderful Judaica shop, and Mimi Meltzer for helping to make it a special place. Please contact me at 301-838-4336 or bprem@aol.com to let me know how you feel about the future of Sisterhood/ Women s Network at Tikvat Israel, and if you would like to help it continue. We hope you will support our special Wearable Art Fashion Show and High Tea catered by Roz Kram with desserts by Larry Gorban on Sunday, May 17 in the social hall. See page 10 for details, and look for the flyers on the Shabbat table. BOOK CLUB Thursday, June 4 The Book Club s next reading selection is Sadia Shepard s The Girl from Foreign. In this beautifully-written memoir, the author travels to India to fulfill a promise to her dying grandmother to learn about her Jewish heritage. Her grandmother grew up among the Bene Israel, a small Jewish community in India. When she married a Muslim, she left Judaism and India. Shepard herself is the product of a mixed marriage: Muslim and Christian. Arriving in India, Shepard connects with the tiny Jewish community and unlocks her family s secret history, using a hand-drawn map and her grandmother s family tree while visiting and photographing the grand and miniscule synagogues in Bombay and on the Konkan Coast. This engaging and pensive memoir of discovery offers a moving portrait of her grandmother and is also a journey into questions of religious, cultural and personal identity. Join us to discuss this unforgettable story of family secrets, buried identities, lost histories, love, and self-discovery. 9 Member News Mazel Tov to Janice and Robert Balin on the marriage of their son Jason Balin to Erica Buchta on March 29. Mail Call Dear Tikvat Israel Congregants: I am writing this letter to express my joy and appreciation to the contributors of my Purim lunch box. A personal thanks to Harold Diamond for delivering it! I was so surprised to open my door and find so many goodies waiting for me, and I didn t want to miss the opportunity to express my gratitude at the thoughtfulness and kindness of so many congregants. It s especially meaningful to me now, as a widow, to know the seniors are not a forgotten population. In the world of so much new technology, much of which is quite foreign to me, it s easy to feel like a dinosaur. Again, a great big thanks for all that you do for so many of us. With sincere gratitude, Carol Ann Krakaur Dear Fellow Congregants, As part of the hamesh Tikvat Israel community, I am thanking everyone for the lovely Mishloach Manot bag I received. It was a lovely assortment of goodies and very much enjoyed and appreciated. I must also say thank you to the Mishloach Manot project coordinators who gave of their time and made such a great effort in making this Purim tradition a successful venture. Space does not allow me to thank each of you personally but you know who you are. So thank you, thank you, thank you to each and every one of you. Ever grateful to be part of Tikvat Israel. Phyllis R. Leise Dr. Kaplan and Tikvat Israel, Thank you very much for your performance on Sunday, March 15 at Ring House. The students put a great deal of time and energy into the song, music and fun! Please express our thanks. Sincerely, Patty Hagen
