Ascetical (Applied) Theology Spiritual Theology The Puritan writer, William Ames spoke about theology as the doctrine of living unto God. It is never enough to leave theology as an academic endeavor, it must be rooted in an experiential
religion; a lived truth that comes from knowing the wonders of God s grace made manifest in His redemptive disclosure to us. Augustine. Confessions. Highly recommended. Bunyan, John. A Classic of the highest order from America s premier philosopher/theologian who championed a thoughtful engagement of speculative theology with practical piety. Lewis, C.S. The Screwtape Letters. A wonderful and yet sinister look at the way temptation works in the life of a believer. This is good moral theology expressed from the devil s point of view in the letters of a senior demon. Lewis means not to take the devil s work lightly, but as believers we ought not take him too seriously either. Luther said the best way to drive out the devil is to laugh at him. Scougal, Henry.
