10 May 2015 Father Chris Wants You To Know... PRAYER FOR PEACE Are you aware of how many news items in the last year have been devoted to events that involve the violation of God s shalom, God s peace, in addition to the loss of life and liberty of so many of our Christian sisters and brothers? Are you willing to join a growing group of people who will step out in faith to pray for peace on a daily basis, and for the restoration of civil dialogue that respects all parties and allows them to both speak and to be heard? Will you take this prayer to your gatherings of friends, neighbors and colleagues, inviting them to join us in working and praying for peace, in ways that cast off prejudice and hurtful pride, so that we may all be one, as Jesus prayed so deliberately? Please use the following prayer wherever and whenever you can, personally with our God and together with our friends, colleagues and faith community members, to allow the nurturing of peace in your own soul to become the seed of a new-found hope for all of us. Father Chris Heller Lord Jesus Christ, you Who are called the Prince of Peace, who are yourself our peace and our reconciliation, who so often said Peace be with you, grant us true and lasting peace! Make all men and women witnesses of truth, justice and love, and banish from their hearts whatever might endanger peace. Enlighten our rulers, that they may promote and defend the great gift of peace, and that we may all share the responsibility of protecting and nurturing that gift. May all peoples of the earth become as brothers and sisters, one to another, and may longed-for peace blossom forth and reign always over us all. We pray in the unity of our saving God and Father, and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, both now and forever. AMEN. 3

10 May 2015 40 Cans for Lent ATTENTION PARENTS & GRANDPARENTS It s that time of year! Getting ready for Graduation. Our Teens are becoming Young Adults starting college with a lifetime of opportunities in front of them. We would like to help our Teens keep a faith connection while they are in college. Many will be away from home and out on their own, what better way to help them stay grounded and give them a safe place to meet new friends than through the Newman Connection. Newman Centers are Catholic ministry centers at non-catholic universities throughout the world. They provide pastoral services and ministries to their Catholic student population. Dominick Giusto (far left), Grand Knight and Dan Tergesen (far right), Past Grand Knight, of St.Joseph the Carpenter Council of the Knights of Columbus present Certificate of Appreciation and gift to Peter Gillen (left) and Spencer Delorenzo(right) of Troop 1 of Boy Scouts of America for their work on the 40 Cans for Lent Food Drive If you would like to make that connection, all you need to do is send an email to Barbara McNulty at youth@stjosephsbabylon.org Include your teens first & last name and the name of the college or university they will be attending in the fall. The information will be forwarded to the proper Newman Center and your teen will be welcomed in the fall when they arrive at their school. Simple. And a great way to keep our teens connected. You may have seen movies about the Rapture. Or, maybe you have seen the bumper sticker: "Warning! In case of Rapture this car will be abandoned!" And, you might have come across or read the Left Behind series of books. Christians of all times have lived in faith-filled hope and expectation of Jesus' return. Today, many Catholics have been caught up in the popular hype that all "true" Christians will soon disappear from earth in a "Rapture". We invite you to join us in a thought provoking, open discussion on "The Rapture" as we examine the biblical interpretations behind this curious doctrine. BIG BROTHERS is a new concept in Faith Formation, having teen boys serve as big brothers/catechists, teaching boys prayers and stories about Jesus. The young boys responded well to having a role model to look up to. 14

Sixth Sunday of Easter - Cycle B Editorials Deacon s Corner A Miracle Morning I stumbled out the door of a mountain cabin where I was spending the weekend working with youth and their families at a rustic resort center. I had a 6:30 AM appointment to keep and squinted from the early autumn sun peeking over pine-blanketed mountaintops. I was started by a voice behind me. Today is a miracle! I turned to find one of the teenagers following behind. How? I asked her. It looked like it might be pleasantly warm later in the day. Otherwise, fairly ordinary. The word miracle seemed like an overstatement. Anyway, I wasn t sure if I could handle much excitement this early in the morning. Think about it, she smiled. The sun rose, didn t it? Yeah. I found it easy to hide any enthusiasm. It seemed to rise on every other morning without my getting involved. That s a miracle! It is miraculous that the earth turns as it does. At night, the sun goes down and in the morning it rises. It just happens! I pretty much already had this figured out. I rubbed sleep from my eyes. I was also busy thinking about how to get a cup of coffee. And look at the mountains! Covered with trees and grass, they look so beautiful. And there, she pointed, a valley. It s incredible. Was she always this perky? And shouldn't there be a rule against perkiness this early in the morning? Especially before coffee? Did you notice the wildflowers? she continued. It all smells so fresh and clean and so good. She took a deep breath and I thought I might have caught a sparkle in her eyes. Though it may have also been a trick of the light. All of nature receives water and sunlight and everything it needs. Things grow and blossom it really is lovely. Now I started to worry. I thought I was actually coming around. Well, a little bit, anyway. Is perkiness contagious? I felt something stirring inside. Up until then I thought this was just an ordinary morning in the mountains. I didn't know what spell she was secretly weaving, but she had a point. It really was beautiful, even if there was nothing magic about it. Then, with a smile that gave her pronouncement a note of finality, she said, And best of all, it will happen again tomorrow. And the next day. And the next! Then she sighed. See? It's a miracle morning. In her poem Aurora Leigh, Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote: Earth's crammed with heaven, And every common bush afire with God: But only he who sees, takes off his shoes, The rest sit round it, and pluck blackberries... Along the early morning path, my friend had removed her shoes. For her, earth was crammed with heaven and every bush afire. It wasn't just perkiness; she had eyes to see what I had completely missed. I was, as Browning might say, sitting around plucking blackberries. Deacon John 18

10 May 2015 Reflections NUMBER 22 IN YOUR PROGRAM, NUMBER 1 IN YOUR HEART It is not often that I write about someone more than once (other than myself, of course), but I think that the heroic Lauren Hill deserves another mention. It was only last November when I heard of Lauren Hill. While most of the country was being bombarded with Brittany Maynard s decision to end her life after being diagnosed with brain cancer and being praised in many circles, Lauren, also suffering from the same disease, was trying to make her college basketball team. She did, and, in a gracious gesture by the NCAA, the first game of the season was moved to an earlier date to ensure her availability to play. She did, scored a quick left-handed basket (a natural right hander, the disease forced her to use her left hand), and thrilled the sold out crowd of some 10,000. Lauren played only a few minutes that day, got another basket that day, and played in four games, scoring 10 points in her college career. Having fulfilled her dream to play college basketball and knowing that her diminished skills would not allow her to be the sought after player once she was, Lauren then sought to bring attention to finding a cure for pediatric cancers and simply to live as long as she could and to enjoy life in whatever way it came. We all have challenges in life and it is how we handle them that will bring us redemption. Our faith tells us that God is with us every step of the way. I suggest that He never gives us more than we can handle, although sometimes that seems very difficult to accept. If we pray and ask God to be with us, our burden will suddenly lighten, and we will more easily find the road we are to take. At the end of the college basketball season, Lauren was given the national Most Courageous Player Award. Thanks to her efforts and her contagious effect on others to become involved, her charity, The Cure Starts Now, raised over $1,800,000. Lauren was called home to God in April and will long be remembered for the grace and dignity that she displayed in living such a short life. Lauren Hill got it. She knew that hers was, perhaps, not the calling she wanted, but the calling God wanted. Let us try to do the same. PRAYER "Life is precious. Every moment you get with someone is a moment that's blessed, really blessed." Lauren Hill.. Stewardship... Stewardship Sound Byte We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who seek out new opportunities to share their gifts to serve others through parish ministries such as Pre-Cana and Baptismal Preparation.. 19

10 May 2015 CMA News As we join together to celebrate all the wonderful Mom s in our lives, let s also take time to remember and pray for all the thousands of Moms who worry about how they are going to put food on the table for their children this week. More than 35% of the 300,000 people on Long Island who receive emergency food each year are children under the age of 18. Please consider supporting the work of the Catholic Ministries Appeal so that we can continue to care for God s children and their families through our Parish Outreach programs and Catholic Charities. Our hope is that each family will make a gift. We cannot ask everyone to consider the same size gift, but after prayer and reflection, each family is invited to make a gift in response to God s generosity in their lives. No gift is too small and all gifts make a difference in the lives of others!
