Are you being served? The Rector Writes... One of the beauties of worshiping in the two churches that make up the Parish of Godalming is that it enables us to offer a varied range of services to one and all. From an 8am 1662 prayer book Holy Communion to an informal Café style gathering of praise, or a formal-choral led evensong to a silence-driven Celtic style service. Besides these of course we have full 10am Holy Communions using what is known as common worship. Variety is said to be the spice of life and certainly our worship is enriched both at SS Peter and Paul s and St Mark s when the menu we offer is broad and wholesome. However, prayerfully preparing, planning and leading worship does require a team to ensure it happens effectively. Being the minister leading the service at the front of the church is only the tip of the team. Like an iceberg, to offer public worship to God requires a number of other ministers offering their time and talent to make sure that the services we hold in our churches will be done to the best of our ability. Just think for a moment about all the behind the scenes work that has to go on just in regard to putting on a communion, making sure we have bread, wine, purificators, candles, silverware and all the other things available and clean for sacred use. My plea this month is for more people to please offer themselves to help with our service to God. We desperately need more servers, sidespersons, intercessors, readers and other people to help make our worship, in whatever form it is dished up, a sweet savour to our Lord (see 2 Corinthians) God Bless Mervyn 5
Prayer Circle - Deeper Followers of Christ Mondays at St Mark s Following on from our St Mark's visioning day, we were tasked by our facilitator, the Rev d Preb. Stephen Cox, to follow up on three key outcomes, on which we scored very low. In the light of this, we are starting with path finder (a prayer circle meeting) aimed at helping us to meet the outcome for 'seeking to find out what God wants' (deeper followers of Christ). Please note that you are not required to pray out loud neither will anyone ask you to say anything. All you will need to do is to support achievement of this outcome through meeting for silent prayers. 7.30pm 7.35pm 7.55pm 8.00pm These prayer meetings last for 30 minutes each Monday Start with gathering and welcome Introductory prayer by leader followed by silence Closing prayer by leader Prayer ends and all depart. For further information, please call Rev d Beverley Hunt on 01483 424710 or Rev d Robbie Harvie on 01483 414 378. ongratulations to Anne Collingridge and Elizabeth Dixon, who both received awards from the Surrey Wildlife Trust recently at a meeting in Brookwood to celebrate 5 years of the Surrey Greenspace Project. Elizabeth was awarded because of her efforts to get wildlife areas protected in Nightingale Cemetery, and Anne because her discovery of 'meadow saxifrage in our churchyard got us involved in the Surrey Greenspace Project in the first place. We are a success story among the other 17 churchyards involved in the project! Anne and Elizabeth both sing in our Church choir. 6
The Guildford Guys! Even by the standards of the mid 19th century, Guildford was not a safe place to frequent in November. The annual events surrounding Guy Fawkes night with bonfires and fireworks were celebrated with extreme zeal in our county town. Orchestrated by a notorious secret society known as the Guildford Guys, consisting mainly of the sons of wealthy local landowners, they built a huge bonfire encouraging the crowds to use anything to hand in order to feed the blaze. Doors, fences, window frames were regularly torn down and on one occasion the whole grandstand from Merrow racecourse was ripped apart and placed on the pyre. Each year things seemed to get worse and during the 1850s the Guildford police protected themselves rather than the town community by locking themselves in their own station near the top of the high street. In 1863 the town corporation made a stand against mob rule by calling in troops together with special constables armed with cutlasses. They were put on the streets throughout the first two weeks of November and the high police presence worked well until the day after they were withdrawn. On the 21 st, only two hours after the troops had left, the Guys appeared back on the streets eager for revenge. They wreaked havoc in the town 7
centre throwing a young police officer on the bonfire. Only after the mayor had read the Riot Act was a semblance of order restored to Guildford. Guy Fawkes Night was moderately free from violence in 1864 but it was not until several of the gang were arrested in the act of clubbing a policeman to death in 1865, that the power of the Guildford Guys was broken. In Godalming we will once again be ruled by our own Lions gang who will organise our bonfire. I urge our local police officers not to attempt to lock themselves in a police station as we no longer have one! Mervyn This year the Town Bonfire and Fireworks take place on Saturday 2 nd November. Godalming and Villages Lions Club is again providing the bonfire and fireworks. The torchlit procession will leave the Pepperpot at 7pm. The bonfire will be lit by the Mayor of Godalming, Councillor Tom Martin at 7.45pm and the fireworks will start at 8pm. Gates to the Lammas Lands behind the United Church in Bridge Road will be open at 6.30pm admission 3 each (no charge for children under the age of 12) You are invited to Rake Court for a Karelian Evening (from St Petersburg to Archangel). O Christmas cards and all things artistic ur 2013 Christmas cards are now on sale in aid of the Friends of St Peter & St Paul. This year s photograph, which is a winter view of the church, taken from the Lammas Lands, was the winning entry in a Christmas card photographic competition, recently run by the Friends. Christmas cards are on sale in packs of 10 at 3.75 per pack and include the message Christmas Greetings. They may be purchased on Sunday mornings before and after the service, from the Parish Office during normal opening hours, from Pavilion in Church Street or by contacting Julian Hubble on 01483 424268. Cards may be hand delivered locally, by arrangement, or sent by post. As a result of holding a Christmas card picture competition this year, we met and conversed with quite a few people who enjoy painting and drawing in their spare time. More than one of our competitors suggested that we might consider hosting an art exhibition in aid of the Friends, at some stage. Inspired by the amount of enthusiasm for this idea, we hope to be able to mount an exhibition in the church next year. Will Aid: If you are one of the 6 out of 10 people who have not made a will, or you made it several years ago and your circumstances have changed, Will Aid is your chance to protect your loved ones and to help charity at the same time. Every November, a number of local participating solicitors waive their fee for writing a basic will and instead invite their clients to make a donation to one of nine leading UK charities supported by the Will Aid initiative (one of which is Christian Aid). The suggested donation is 90 for a basic will or 135 for a pair of basic mirror wills. Music for November in the Parish Church Lunchtime Organ Recital Friday 1 st November Our splendid organ is just now sounding at its very best! Following the long period of hot weather, the temperature in the church has now dropped to a more normal level, and so the organ tuners were able to spend a day recently in vital fine tuning (and action checking). Jennifer Chou's quite stunning recital last month revealed the organ in its new brilliant health! We now hope the church's temperature will remain fairly constant for some time to come! The month of November opens with a Lunchtime Recital by our old friend, MARTIN ELLIS, from Dorking Parish Church. Martin has given recitals here annually for many years, and we are always assured of a varied and colourful programme executed with Martin's customary drama and flair. He has been Organist of St.Martin's, Dorking, for nearly 28 years. His musical education began as a chorister at the Temple Church under the legendary Sir George Thalben-Ball. He studied the organ at the Royal College of Music with Sir John Dykes Bower, and his career since has been largely spent in prestigious schools. Martin is also a Methodist Lay Preacher. His programme on 1 st November opens in great style with Hollins' Triumphal March in E flat. This is followed by two delightful miniatures by the Belgian composer, Joseph Jongen. Bach's Six 'Schubler' Chorale Preludes feature next, of which the first, 'Wachet auf' (Sleepers, wake) is especially well-known. Following a 'Scherzoso' by the 19th century Battison Haynes, the recital concludes with Vierne's evocative 'Clair de Lune' (redolent of Debussy?) and his virtuostic 'Toccata'. Do come and experience our organ while it is sounding so good - and Martin will no doubt (to quote Alan Bott), "Give it all she's got!" 12 JTB

Pages from Link Up, which gives us news from Churches Together in Godalming and District, will now be included in our Parish Magazine. From the Chair of Churches Together in Godalming and District As Chair of Churches Together I will take part again this year (all being well) in the Remembrance service led by Godalming Parish Church. It will, I imagine, be the important event in the life of both the church and the community at large that it always is. It usually falls to the Church of England to host civic and national services and community events with some sort of spiritual element to them. That s partly because of our role as the Church by law established, which makes us the default denomination to organise such things - we have a public responsibility (and one which doesn t always sit completely comfortably!). It s also because the Church of England, in a sense, keeps the nation s spiritual memory. Looking after medieval churches and cathedrals and bishoprics links the Anglican Church to centuries of history in a way that no other denomination experiences: it bears the signs and marks of continuity. Not that the C of E has always used that position very well. It spent many decades brutally attempting to repress any other form of Christianity in these islands, and its sense of guarding an English tradition of religious tolerance and moderation is rather a modern invention. But perhaps discovering that tradition, and having a role in developing it, is itself part of the providence of God. The role that the Anglican Church has found, of being a place where different Christian traditions meet and are negotiated has, I believe and hope a vital importance in the future story of the unity of the Churches. How that exactly pans out is God s business, but those of us who are Anglican Christians should bear it in mind at Remembrancetide and any other opportunity we have for worship together with our brothers and sisters. The Great Godalming Christmas Tree Festival will begin Saturday 30 th November at St Peter & St Paul s Church on the day of Godalming s light switch on. Canon Mervyn Roberts hopes that churches, organisations and individual groups will want to sponsor and decorate a tree promoting themselves. Advent Sunday, 1 st December at 6.30pm: Godalming Baptist Church, a Service of Celebration with Singspiration Choir. All Welcome. REPORT ON CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 2013 It is my pleasure this year to thank all those who had a part in the considerable effort that is given to Christian Aid Week here in Godalming and in the churches that comprise our District. The total raised this year was 14,106, still a most 25
worthwhile amount, although a decrease of 2,137 on the previous year. It is particularly gratifying that all the churches in the District made a contribution this year. Recognising that the number of collectors who are prepared to contribute to the house to house collections is falling every year, church representatives will be discussing fresh ideas for supporting this valuable cause in future days. Everyone is encouraged to consider if you would like to be involved, when details are circulated early next year. John Dunning Busbridge and Hambledon Church NEWS FROM THE CHURCHES After a wonderful Harvest Breakfast at Hambledon and a Harvest Lunch at Busbridge (congratulations to those who made it to both by the way!) we re looking ahead to a time of both tradition at Christmas and imminent change. We will be looking to recruit a new Team Leader for Families, Youth & Children as well as a new Families Worker to join our team and pray that the right people apply for these positions with over 350 children associated with our Children s Work, these are vital roles to fill. The Parish of Godalming SS Peter & Paul Canon Mervyn Roberts writes: At this time of remembrance we begin the month, Sunday 3 November, with our Annual Service of Thanksgiving for those whom we love but see no longer. The service reflects on the pattern of grieving which we all go through to some extent. Under the various stages of bereavement we examine our belief, faith and offer worship to God. It will be held in Candlelight in our ancient Lady Chapel, timed to last 30 minutes. It will conclude with refreshments for those who would like to stay after the service. As the town centre parish church we also host the civic Remembrance service which will take place on 10 th November, beginning at 10.50 by the War memorial. Our Great Godalming Christmas Tree Festival will begin on 30 th November, the day of Godalming s light switch on. Finally the great society event of the year, the Godalming BELL BALL takes place at the Charterhouse Great Hall on Friday 13 th December. Tickets are going fast so please contact us as soon as possible to book a place or, if there are a group, to book a table. This is one society event that is established as part of Godalming s tradition. 26
Godalming United Church:In October our Face to Face guest was the outgoing Bishop of Guildford, Rt Rev'd Christopher Hill, in stimulating and entertaining conversation with Paul Hulme. This popular series of open conversations with eminent personalities continues in March when we welcome Rt Rev'd George W Stack, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Wales. Our Harvest celebration with the theme of One World was a truly festive occasion arranged cafe-style, and harvest lunch followed an interlude of entertainment. We have a Skittles Evening with Fish and Chip Supper on Saturday 9 November [see above for details] and on Sunday 10 November, Remembrance Sunday the service will be from 10 to 10.30 a.m. enabling worshippers to join the Civic Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial in the Jack Philips Memorial Park. Our minister, Rev d. Paul Hulme will preach at the Civic Service which is at 11.15 a.m. in the Parish Church. St John s Farncombe: Rev d James Rattue writes, I am writing just before our Harvest celebrations take place and expect to welcome lots of people through the doors of the church as usual for those events! At the end of the month we begin the Remembrancetide season with the annual Memorial Service for those bereaved on October 27 th, followed by the Requiem Mass of All Souls on November 2 nd and our honouring of Farncombe s War Dead on Remembrance Sunday when we lay a wreath at the War Memorial in the Church. We held a successful new event, Come Dance With Us, in September in which nearly fifty people glided and span to ballroom, jazz and Latin dance tunes (or just watched and enjoyed) and we hope to do the same on 23 rd November. The Toddler group has been very successfully relaunched on Friday mornings and is doing well. Our last Messy Church gathering on September 28 th had almost 90 attendees and the next is on November 9 th. Godalming Baptist Church: It was good that Georgina Varney [a former Pastoral Assistant, especially with the youth and children], could be with us for the weekend of 12/13 October. She is now heading her own Christian charity called OUR WORLD being based in the West Midlands. Georgina finds many opportunities to work in schools, taking assemblies and running projects which make children and families aware of the needs of God s world. She inspired us to buy Fair Trade products. Our World particularly supports a small orphanage in Uganda. There are two events planned for Advent and we are delighted that Revd. Margot Spencer from Busbridge Church will be leading a Quiet Morning of reflection at Queen Street on Saturday 23 November between 9.30 and 12 noon. 27

St Mark s Community Church: St Mark s celebrated Harvest Thanksgiving with a parish Harvest Lunch on the 29 th September after the 10am service and again on Friday 11 th October with the Children of Green Oak School. In this short service, the children sang the Harvest Samba and If I were a Butterfly to a hall packed with teachers, parents and guardians. Each class bought food items for the food bank and gave thanks to God for all that they have. I echo what the Head of School said: there was something very special about seeing them and their parents all together at St Mark s Church. 28
