Episcopal Day School Our first month of preschool has gone well and the children are getting into a routine and are already excited about working on the alphabet, numbers, colors and shapes. And they are doing great! In September, we had our first visit to the library for story time. We ll continue to go on a monthly basis during the school year. The children listen to a story, sing songs, watch a video book and get to pick out a book to bring back to the classroom for the month. ShrimpFest 2012 Shrimp Fest Once again lots of people like shrimp. We served 180 people and should clear around $2000. Thanks again to Carson & Sandra Dawson for getting the shrimp, all the people who prepared the shrimp for freezing, and then those great cooks who kept the shrimp coming all night. John & Johnsie Reynolds and Sam & Helen Thorn were great to bus tables and serve drinks all night. A special thanks goes to Heather Petersen who was willing to help organize this year s event. Our mum sale is in progress at press time. Thank you to all those who purchased mums and are turning in BoxTops for Education. Your support of these fund-raisers is truly appreciated as they are a big factor in helping us meet our annual expenses. We are looking forward to October and all the many fall activities that brings. Happy fall to all our friends at St. Thomas! Bishop s Visit Bishop Curry will be visiting on Sunday, Oct. 7th. There will be one service at 10:00am. ECW Morning Chapter Morning Chapter We will meet Tuesday, Oct. 9th at 10:30am in the Vestry Room. 3

Happy 80th Fr. Nelson! Photo courtesy of Tom Ham On Saturday September 8, one day after his actual birthday, a number of St. Thomas members joined with friends and parishioners from across the area in surprising Fr. Nelson Hodgkins with an 80th birthday party. Sixty-three parishioners, friends and clergy gathered and somehow actually managed to completely surprise him. After greeting each one, Nelson blew out the 80 candles on his cake and John Bullock read a very nice letter of greetings and good wishes from Bishop Curry. During the afternoon, a slide show was projected with pictures from Nelson s childhood through the present. Nelson began his ministry in the Diocese of East Carolina serving, among other churches, St. Thomas (Bath), St. James the Fisherman (Shallotte), and Grace Episcopal (Whiteville). After relocating to Greensboro in the late 60 s, he has served St. Andrew s (Greensboro), St. Christopher s (High Point) twice, St. Paul s (Thomasville), St. Luke s (Eden) twice, St. Thomas (Reidsville), Trinity Church (Mount Airy), St. Paul s (Salisbury) and St. Elizabeth s (King). Because of the large territory he has covered, St. Andrew s (Greensboro) was chosen as the most central location to hold the party. Following the closing of St. Elizabeth s (King) earlier this year, Nelson still conducts occasional services at historic St. Phillip s (Germantown), has filled in at St. Paul s (Salisbury), and has also served some other Mount Airy area churches of various denominations. ECW The ECW met on September 16th. Suzanne Howard reported that there was a balance of $10,581.93 in the treasury. She also reported that they expected to clear $1800 on the yard sale and $2300 on the Shrimp Fest. Attendance at the September morning chapter meeting was very low. It was suggested that email reminders be sent out to ECW members reminding them of the meetings. Jeanne Horsley stated that she would share information about the spring retreat in Winston as soon as she received that information. The group voted to purchase or pay for the following; an earth box (cost $192), a small box used to store dirt for funerals, hymn numbers/phrases (cost $155), and maintenance for the large kitchen refrigerator. The refrigerator has not been professionally cleaned in quite a long time. There will be a reception following the Bishop s visit on October 7th. The committee will be calling ECW members about food items needed for the reception. Suzanne reminded the group that many hands are needed on the day of the Bazaar. Dot Shelton will make the tomato basil soup on Saturday October 13th and the beef soup on Saturday October 20th. Please plan to come help one or both days. St. Thomas Episcopal Church By-Laws There is no record of By-Laws having been written for St. Thomas and the Diocese prefers each Parish have By-Laws. Therefore, a set of By-Laws will need to be approved by the congregation at our General Meeting November 11th. They will then be sent to the Diocese for their approval. Please read these carefully and come to the General Meeting in November with comments or suggestions you would like to make. These By-Laws and explanations are posted on our web site.
